Damnit! My whole week has been ruined! Fitone is not impressed with my twenty chins! Excuse me for wasting your time with my terrible post. I’ll wait until I can match you “female wall/rocker climber” pullup for pullup.
Fitone is gay.
I have done 8 reps at 278 on a fat bar with a wide grip.
charile I hope I didn’t sound negative. That wasn’t the point. I was merly explaining that chins are easy to do. If you do them. Pull-ups on the other hand is much harder. plams facing towards the bar) Chins plams are facing towards your face.

Chins are “easier” because the biceps become involved at a higher rate than with Pull-ups. It also has to do with how you are positioned under the bar with Chins as opposed to Pulls. More on that later.
At this point in my training (as I have stated) I can do 34 dead hang Chin-ups in a row. I will hit 40 by August! (goals are stated in the affirmative). I am able to do 29 dead hang Pull-ups in a row (palms facing away). Don’t get me wrong I know there are guys who can blow that away. I’m not bragging.
This is about right (actually a little better than norm), as you should be able to do about 75% in Pull-ups what you can do in Chin-ups.
I have a few secrets regarding Pulls/Chins that I think can improve anyones numbers. Tricks and techniques that I have picked up through the years.
I’m headed off to bed right now, but I will be glad to post my training relative to Chins/Pulls tomorrow. Remember, us old guys get tired around this time…Haha.
i’m at about 250 right now, so i can manage about 8-9 chin ups before i start trying to kiss the bar and not pass it.
i swear, if ZEB doesn’t have monster pipes with a itty-little body attached to them, i’m going to get a PI to start stalking him to find out his secrets!
yea post it tommorrow when the “old guy” wake up.
Zeb,
Not to hijack this thread, but I’m really looking forward hearing your suggestions. Related I’d be interested in your perspective on:
- program for youth (my oldest son is 10) I wondered when your son, I think you mentioned once he is 12, started working on chins.
- thoughts on building up stregth to be able to train pulls/chins if bf%/strenght level don’t allow you to complete a normal set/rep protocol. Thanks in advance

I did 8 sets of 5 reps with bodyweight last week. It’s time to start adding weight.
I saw a video of Goldie doing his chins - it was scary.
bump…
i’ve been stuck at 17 for two years (chins). i can do +50lbs x 10, and + 90lbs for one good rep. cant break the 20 rep barrier. i’m fairly light - 200lbs, 6’2" - so its not like i’m a huge guy tryin to break 20 reps. i’m curious to see what Zeb’s routine is like!
old dogg - here’s a t-mag article that covers one of your questions about progressions:
not to brag or anything, but I can do 1000…
minus 999… minus 1… probably lol
Lauren
I think my max is 7, close to 8 chins, but in one workout i’ll do several sets up to my max. did about 5 or 6 sets last time. i’m working on improving, about 7 months ago i couldn’t do a single one.
it usually becomes a contest when a girl (me and one other girl i’ve seen in my whole gym) is doing chins, cuz the guys have to come in and prove they can do more. anyone walking past the pullup bar must stop and see how many they can crank out. most can’t do any, so they come up with some excuse and walk around me.
Davo,
Thanks. That is exactly what I was looking for. Peace.

bigshow, ever try low reps? Try 8 sets of 3, for example.
I just began a separate thread regarding my training routine!
