Had a great weekend in DBQ, Ia for UPA Nationals. Saw some old friends, made some new friends and watched people smash weight.
We had 4 going on Saturday. Our gym owner, teammate, and friend finally hit a goal he was chasing for 5 years. He made weight at 181 and totaled 1600. Had a 560sq, 391be and 650dl. Another guy couldn’t make 165 and was a real light 181. This jackass tried to hurry thru a last squat warmup when they called him at 5 out. He missed the lift in the warmup room. We talked him off the ledge, told him he was an dumbass, rewrapped his knees and he smoked his opener.
We (and our wives) had dinner after the meet at a wonderful Japanese Steakhouse.
Wife and I split a 30oz Porterhouse (TBone for 2) on the way home Sunday before getting caught in a storm at 70mph.
last week: been lifting off/on. nothing major. just kept the body moving
Had over 50 procedure last Friday morning. Lost @ 6-8 lbs in process. Doctors orders - no lifting this week. Wait until Saturday to squat. Eyeing November UPA meet. Try to stay healthy this time.
Mike McGivern was in town. He stopped by to get some squat work in. He has a meet in St Louis in 5 weeks. Always good to talk lifting with a top ranked lifter after we were done.

Tomorrow we get ready for our airplane pull by pulling a bus (several times).
22nd Street Barbell has assembled a group of misfits to attempt to pull an airplane on 6/6. The donations go to the Special Olympics.
All the great pulling you’re doing should pay off with the airplane. Hope we get to see a little video of your towing and hope you do well on donations.

Thanks GV. Just got home from “practice”. Seven of us were able to make tonite’s session. We broke into groups of 2, 2, and 3. We pulled at 15-20K lb bus around the mall parking lot at our gym. Pull it for @ 30 yds each attempt. Total of 4 pull for each group. We have @ 12 people firmly committed and 3-4 maybes. Max team total is 20 people. If anyone wants to come to Des Moines, IA for the June 6 pull, you’ve got a place to stay and unlimited food (with me and my wife).
DL were slower than expected but legs felt like mush after last nite’s bus pull. Hips were surprisingly loose. Squats went better than expected. Still tinkering with foot position - been walking weights out of mono. Getting used to squatting 2x per week.
Wish I could take you up on the offer to pull with you guys and eat all available food. Very generous of you. Perhaps there will be another chance. You’re an inspiring bunch and show great teamwork. I think that kind of camaraderie is commendable.
Today 11am
Plane pull 757 (@120K lbs) for Special Olympics. moved it the necessary 12 feet in 7.4 seconds. We apparently don’t listen to instruction well as we were late initiation our pull. There were 20 of us. We had @ 13 guys and 7 gals. it was fun. really loosened my hips/back up.
Afternoon after food @ 4pm
squats
5x3
paused squats

This was the best my hips felt in a long time. Noticing hips feel better (after pulling plane) and doing a couple specific stretches. Also concentrated on keeping shins more vertical (after watching Ed Coan video). Much easier to get and stay in good positions throughout the lift.
Daughter turned 21 today. Took her out to lunch after the plane pull. She wanted Italian. I ended up with a calzone, a yummy yummy calzone.
