Cheatin' The Reaper One Day At A Time

Got a call from my sister tonite after I got back from the gym. We were in Dubuque again last weekend visiting mom. Kind of said goodbyes. Her health is failing fast. Need to round up the wife and kids for the trip back home.

I am thankkful that the kids got to know their grandparents.

I’m 48 and have managed to beat my body up pretty well through the years. I’ve played football and rugby, wrestled and been of of Uncle Sam’s finest. I have old hips and beat up shoulders. Anymore, I’m an old guy with good hands.

I lifted/trained religiously until one day I found out that beer tasted better than gatorade.
That lasted through 1/17/89, some 10 years. Been a friend of Bill’s since then. I went through a minor bout of depression when my basement gym was lost in a catastrophic flood. My income has been cut in half through the last 3 years. Well, enough sniveling. I’m still on the right side of the grass.

A lot to be said for Bill W. A lot to be said for iron as a solution to about everything.

You’ve got my best wishes.

My mom passed away last Thursday, at age 90. Left work and went to the gym. I find solice when lifting. Did 5x10 DL, 3x10 front squat and 4x6 GM. Didn’t feel the first 3 sets of DL.

Then off to Dubuque. The wake was Sunday and the funeral was yesterday. Saw a lot of family/relatives and friends that I haven’t seen in a long, long time. We talked about changing that. The tears eventually turned to laughter.

Today;

Bench
5x10 160

Bent Rows
5x10 155

Tricep Pushdown
5x10 70

Everything was light and easy. Looking forward to the next cycles where things get a little more fun.

My condolences hawk. My Dad passed away last May, I hope your Mom slipped away easily without pain.

Sorry for your famiy’s loss.

We just went through the same thing a few weeks ago myself, with my grandmother. Was sad to gather for that kind of reason, but nice to see everyone you haven’t in a while, however it happens, really.

So she was a good mother? Don’t want to sound insensitive, but not everyone is lucky enough to have wonderful parents. You sound lucky.

The grief eventually fades, and you’re left with the good memories.

Thanks, mom went quickly and relatively pain free. The in-home hospice nurses were fantastic.

Thanks for the thoughts. Sorry for your loss.

I consider myself pretty lucky. We lost dad almost 8 years ago. He was a good guy. My mom was the glue that held the family together. She may have been small in stature but she was a spitfire. She had a quick smile, quick wit and appreciable sense of humor.

My mom was a seamstress by trade. I learned some new words at a very young age if a mistake was made on a wedding gown or dress. I also learned pretty quickly some words shouldn’t be repeated.

Condolences.

Today Squats

Hips tighter than ever. Foam rolled and streched prior and after. Realized won’t be doing any significant/appreciable weight for @ 6 weeks. I’m allegedly building a base. Signed up for a bench meet to be held at our gym. Meet is in June. I will be in the raw division. Will try to get down to 220, need to lose @ 12#. It’s a reach to think about 198#. Haven’t cut wieght in a long, long time. Did drop 30# after divorce 8 years ago. Don’t think my current wife would be too happy if I chose this method. Then again, maybe she would.

Squat
1x5 175
1x5 195
3x10 215 light, light, light. I almost feel closterphobic squatting in a power rack. Something I need to get used to or go out to the land of lifting gloves and sleeveless shirts and use the squat rack.

DL against 110# minis
3x10 205 (+110 at top)

RDL
3x10 135 - will be scrapping these. hate doing them.

Kettlebell Swings
3x15 30#. It’s the heaviest kettlebell they have. We will bring in heavier ones soon.

Picked up a Lamb of God CD & burned to IPod. Passed on a couple German & Norwegian black metal CDs. Casey Casam would shit himself.

Heh, yes, I like squatting on an open air rack also. I have been a bit worried about having to bail on one, though. Not sure the little ridge at the back of the crossbeam would stop the bar if I dump it backwards onto it. One of these days, we will see, I am sure. But not for a while, since I am rehabbing my squat atm.

You’ll be able to drop that 12 lbs by June, no problem.

Today - OH Press

Oh Press
5x10 95

Lat Pulldown
5x10 120

Tricep Pushdown
3x20 65

Shoulder is feeling better. Still have lingering doubts when OH pressing. Thinking of changing my name to Nancy.

My cohort who has the Yoke bar is moving to Florida…Dammit. Another friend who is a trainer is moving back to DSM…yahoo. Also, a pair of farmer’s walk handles appeared in the back room…yahoo x2.

DL Day

DL
1x5 210
1x5 240
3x10 260

Front Squat
5x10 135

Good Morning
4x6 205

Had a text conversation with a person who I have the utmost respect for. We talked of training with a purpose instead of just lifting. I had gravitated toward just lifting. We’ve known each other a long time and he didn’t mince his words. He will be lifting with us at the meet in July.

So, long and short of it, starting tommorow I will do functional cardio to help my conditioning, recovery, general fitness, and slowly shed some lbs. I had never quite gotten around to it. I was told to start Wendler’s 5/3/1 for powerlifting at the end of this week’s cycle since it’s a good jumping off point. I get to leave a volume day in the workout to help build a base for the eventual workload. I was told to reset maxes lower to accomodate the GPP and allow for a ramp time into the program. I was told good things come to those who wait. I am actually looking forward to this chapter. I think it’ll be simiar to a forced march while in the Corps.

Tomorrow’s cardio will consist of 15 min eliptical, prowler pushes (w/possible vomitting), 2x15 straight bar burpree to press (and more possible vomitting), followed by 20 min eliptical. Lucky me.

Cardio

All elipticals being used. Foam rolled/streched.
Prowler push
6 trips x 20yds w/90#
1x15 burpee to straight bar press. Second set not happening.
Elipticals all still in use

1 mile jog/walk/run after getting home.

Caught something nasty. No training for me.

Congestion & the subsuquent headache sucks. It’s moving into my chest. Woohoo. I think I know how John Hurt felt in Alien.
