You can use them on any carb day.

Hey everyone,
First day on CD diet- I find it tough not eating pastries etc. I have a lot of weight to lose. I am going for protein shake right now to stave off hunger pains.
I look forward to everyone’s comments

You find it tough not to eat pastries? It’s a good idea to start by not buying them… ![]()
How much weight do you have to lose?
Cravings can be killer if you aren’t used to living on a clean diet, but they don’t have to be. Keep your end goals in mind at all times. You really have the potential to lose quite a bit of weight on this diet, but only if you strictly adhere to the requirements. This beginning phase (not giving too much away) is really going to be the hardest part. If you can get through that you’re golden.
Good luck and don’t hesitate to ask for advice here. The menus Joel sent have some great options in there so you won’t feel like you’re depriving yourself. I personally would like to know where he came up with all that stuff? He should be working for the Food Network!

Thanks for support. I have probably 80 lbs to lose. Former jock- packed on lbs through eating junk and not exercising. Now going to strictly adhere to CD and start working out again. Toughest part of day is 3-5 pm before dinner- and after dinner (9-11 pm)- tend to eat garbage at those time.
Enjoying my Myoplex carb sense shake and suggestions re shake protein powders taste and work best/
Thanks
Metabolic Drive
End of list. It really is as good as everyone touts it to be.
Need to lose 80 lbs- have trouble eating junk food from 3- 5 pm and 9-12 Pm- just had Myoplex carb sense shake- Any suggestions on protein powders shakes- work best?- Thanks

Metabolic Drive, which is available through the T-Nation store here (click on the top left graphic) is recommended.

I use Metabolic Drive protein powder to stave off some of my sweet tooth cravings. The vanilla with a big dash of cinnamon taste great.
You can also get some baker’s flavorings at the grocery store to make whatever flavor shake you want(Thanks, Shugart). They taste great and when you mix the shake with some ice makes it seem like you are having a dessert. Try it out for one of your snacks.
During the Low Carb week, you said green vegetables are ok. Does this include celery (nothing on it) sticks? I found these to be helpful as a snack.

Then proceeded to DQ a couple hours later and got a freakin’ medium blizzard. I haven’t gotten a medium since Junior High! [/quote]
One of the reasons I “ballooned” in college was an amazing ability to eat large DQ Blizzards at will. Wish I was lifting heavy back then. I tried that about 8 months ago … and I felt sick for a day. Admittedly, my wife and I had small Blizzards on Saturday and we killed most of a pizza (with beer!) on Sunday.
Incidentally, my wife is actually doing CD. I’m just along for the ride (i.e. it’s alot easier if both people in the house are eating the same sorts of things).
Any thoughts on red wine versus beer on HGI/HGL and cheat days? The beer of choice is Guinness at ~120 calories per
12 oz. Beer has nice amount of magnesium in it :). Red wine has nice antioxidants. Oh, the agony! (Yup, my main grief while dieting will be the booze, not the food sniff).
Regards,
Mark

I’m guessing yes. Celery has negative calories. You burn more calories chewing it than you get from it.

I’ve read about the flavorings before. How much would you need to add to a 2 scoop shake to really taste it? Any suggestions for ones that are good, or bad?

I guess I thought celery was green… ![]()
I eat it with natural peanut butter and it’s still basically 0 carb, plus it helps fulfill your fat requirements. If you eat them plain, you may not even have to count them. Isn’t there like 2 calories in 1000 stalks? I have always considered celery to be a negative calorie food, if not at least a no calorie one.
i use the strawberry flavoring, the pineapple flavoring, the almond extract, and sometimes orange to flavor my cottage cheese, sometimes i mix in cottage cheese with chocolate protein powder and one of those to give it a different taste.
Hey folks, here’s an idea. Post up any particularly clever meals you came up with (and don’t heckle people about the details … part of this diet is the freedom from details).
protein portion of canned salmon (slightly smaller than usual)
couple Tsp of olive oil
dash of mustard (SMALL!)
dash of relish (SMALL!)
big bed of spinach
couple stalks of celery
small handful of walnuts
The celery/nuts really make it feel like a meal. Note that the added fat should be compensated for by a slightly smaller portion of the fish.

Mark

A two scooper of Vanilla Grow! goes well with about a Tsp of peppermint or a Tsp of orange extract. The orange and peppermint also do good things to Chocolate Grow!. A little bit of lemon juice (no need for extract) into vanilla Grow! is nice. Mixing chocolate Grow! and strawberry Metabolic Drive can get you over a sunday/ice cream/milkshake problem.
If you are really hard up for some sweets, a liter of water, a healthy squeeze of lemon juice, and a pile of Splenda may get you through. I think it’s better to stay off the sweets for as long as possible though – break yourself from the need.
Back to the extracts: you DO NOT need a lot of the flavorings … they are STRONG! Too much and the flavor will knock you over. Also, the flavorings are generally in an alcohol base so this is another reason to minimize their use.

Mark
Hope everybody’s doing well on Day 1 here…
I’m confused about ‘net carbs’ and sugar alcohols-- a friend at work had a low-carb bar at lunch today and I wondered if something like that was acceptable and if so, how to calculate the amount of carbs. If the label said it had 16 grams of carbohydrate but 13 of those were sugar alcohols, is it really just 3g carbs? Were I to eat one of those (I didn’t), how much would it add to my daily carb count?
Regarding Metabolice Drive- any recommendations for flavor besides chocolate- vanilla is out of stock on T-Nation. thanks
I’ve been eating baby spinach topped with tuna, chopped pecans and shredded cheese. I make a dressing by mixing vinegar, water, paprika, salt, onion powder and splenda. Its pretty good.
Also, in case any one doesn’t know this trick, it is really good if you mix a tablespoon or two of natural peanut butter in with chocolate protein and a tiny bit of water to pudding consistency then put it in the freezer for about 10 minutes.

I’ve succesfully completed the V-Diet, so no cravings left. Thanks for the tips though. I’ll have to try out some of those flavorings.

Unless you are diabetic and concerned with glucose levels, count all carbs. Sugar alcohol is still a carb and can still induce an insulin response, albeit slower, and can still be converted to fat and stored.

Banana is my favorite. All of them are good actually.
