Doug's Sorta-V Diet

Right now I’m finishing up my 3rd day on my own bastardized version of the Velocity Diet, and so far it’s been pretty smooth sailing. I’m starting out a 210lbs with an internet guesstimate of 18-20ish% bodyfat. I have no strongman gut, just side/back fat. I took the diet to lose the weight, but also see if I can pick up the changes in eating habits. In my title I wrote “Sorta-V” because I did make changes to the O.G. Velocity Diet:

In some of the meals, I used a different whey protein than Metabolic Drive. It does have BCAAs in it though, so it’s not all bad. I can however taste the difference and it is no bueno when I find out I have the other kind mixed in (more on this in a minute.)

Instead of Benefiber, I have my own secret weapon: Fiber One hard candies. They’re sugar free and have 2g fiber each. I pop 2 or 3 during the day.

I use a superfood suppliment in the first shake of the day. For an extra 35 calories, I get all those micronutrients so I thought it was a good trade.

I don’t walk in the moring due to having to get up at 4:30am just to make it to work on time. I stick to bee-bopping on the treadmill as a cooldown after lifting.

Now, a couple days before Day 1, I took Dan John’s idea of bagging suppliments and made it even more logistically idiot-resistant (I never say idiot-proof). I set up 28 1 gallon baggies, 1 for each day, and I measured out every stinkin’ Metabolic Drive meal and put them in their own baggie. Yep, 2 scoops protein and a serving of flax in 140 baggies. That way all I have to do is grab the day’s bag, a shaker, some water, and I’m out the door. I do measure the Surge differently because I don’t have to take it everyday and it gets its own bottle.

Like I said before, everything is going pretty well. Day 1 I was greeted at work with about 50 boxes of Krispy Kremes (I’m not kidding), and everyone ordering lunch from Hooters. I had none of it and stuck to the shakes. The workout that night was good too. It was my first leg day of the week and I took it easy because I just got over a cold.

Day 2 was uneventful, except for my ride home. I have a very long ride to/from work (67 miles), and there’s times where I have to stop somewhere and use the comode. So I almost make it home, but the #1 tingles and jingles start taking hold, and that’s when my sneaky mind starts playing tricks on me. “Come on, just stop in Taco Bell or McD’s and use the head. Then, ya know, you could order something off the menu.” I fought through it without much trouble and enjoyed my evening shake w/ peanut butter.

Today when by without incident. Well, my mood did turn a little sour when coworkers bombarded me with stupid questions about 30mins until the next shake. Doug was getting upset! My workout when great, and I’m starting to get used to having the Surge as a workout drink, even though the damn bottle I had was leaking. Begone to the trash oh junky shaker bottle! And now I’m just killing time until the nighttime shake, my mult-v, and ZMA.

Days 4 and 5 have been the worst. No slip ups (well except for a couple caffeine free diet cokes), but it’s still pretty hard. Probably has to do with my commute.

It took over 2 hours to get home yesterday and over 3 hours today. Gggrrrr…At least I stretched out my shake times and had one while I was in the car. I probably would’ve went off the wagon tonight if I didn’t.

Oh well, at least there will soon be a chocolate/vanilla/peanut butter shake with my name on it.

If you’re going to base your diet on the V-Diet, you at least need to use some sort of casein. Metabolic Drive is not a whey powder. It has whey in it, but the reason Shugart recommends using MD is the micellar casein that takes longer to digest. MUCH longer. I think it would be pretty hard to stick with the diet with just whey.

And don’t “bee-bop” on the treadmill. Walk on it, but don’t “bee-bop.”

Whoops, should’ve been more specific. I used one scoop MD, one scoop of the other stuff in some of the shakes.

And for me, bee-bopping is ~3/3.5 miles per hour on a 3.5% incline.

It’s ok to bee-bop, just don’t tell people you do. It’s kind of like midget porn. I won’t say why.

So tired of reading this shit about V-Diet when it AIN’T V-diet. Just call it a diet. Either do it proper or call it something else.

See, its posts like this that I don’t understand. Why would you want to come on someone else’s thread and post negative and frankly kind of rude comments like this? If you don’t like what you read or don’t agree, either don’t post or maybe TRY to be just a little nicer…

To Doug: Sorry about taking up the space for my rant. It is just the attitude of some people here trips me out.

Congratulations on your success so far! You have already taken huge steps towards success by exercising the discipline to resist temptation. I for one am proud of you and keep hanging in there. If you can resist 50 boxes of donuts on day 1, you can make it. Just remember to always have a back up plan. You might want to think about keeping a shake baggy in the glove compartment for emergencies.

I am going to keep checking in and see the pounds melt away! Just take it one day at a time and if you do blow it, don’t quit.

Good luck!

That would be why I wrote “Sorta-V Diet”. And hey, if I fail (quit diet/don’t lose much/etc.), it’ll help ensure others who are thinking about the diet follow it to the letter and don’t make changes like I did. Thanks for the pep talk though.

Do what works for you. Call it anything you want.

Everybody here makes such a big deal about the name of this diet. Probably because of Shugart’s rant in his latest article. There has been various forms of this diet around for years.

Yeah I know what you mean. I picked my title because “I started a diet inspired by Chris’ Velocity Diet” just didn’t flow nicely as a title to a thread.

On that note, I had a whole food meal of a cheese omelette with lettuce and tomato on the side. Good news is everything tasted fantastic! Better news is the rest of the day went great with the 3 remaining shakes. I was a little worried I’d want to eat more whole food, but it wasn’t a big deal at all.

I know I’ve lost weight because I see more definition in my arms and legs, and tomorrow I find out at the gym.

Good for you for sticking to it, that’s what counts the most. Regardless of the mods you made (and the general feelings towards that), sticking with the plan is still one of the hardest things.

Weighed in at 204lbs tonight! That was definitely a confidence booster. Plus today was uber-easy to get through on just the shakes. I was really worried I couldn’t handle no solid food today.

Well, I guess you can scratch my last weight total because I don’t know how accurate the scale is. I use the scale at the gym and according to that P.O.S. I weighed anywhere between 198 and 210 tonight. I’m bummed I won’t be able to have the numbers that show weight loss, but if the diet helps change my eating habits after it’s over, this is more than worth it.

One thing I can do is measure myself since I finally have a cloth tape measure. Waist measurement tonight was 37". Damn! (not good damn).

The routine of the diet is pretty much automatic now. I make my first shake the night before and stick it in the fridge to get thick and cold. Then after every shake I “reload” in the same bottle and put it back in the fridge. So far so good.

Today was cheat meal day and I’m noticing a slight change in what I like to eat and what I don’t like. I went to one of these quick-serve mexican grill places and got a salad w/ chopped steak on top and a dab of guacamole. I’ve always hated guacamole, until now. It didn’t go down exactly like pumpkin pie filling, but I got to tell you, it was pretty close.

The salad came in a tortilla bowl, I guess as an effort to make the healthiest thing on their menu unhealthy. Just for kicks I took a couple of bites to see what would happen. The first bite was ok, but the second bite was godawful NASTY. All I thought was “man, this tortilla tastes like shit…COOL!”

Well, I may have to cut off my diet experiment 1 week early. I stumbled onto an oppurtunity to make myself as strong as possible and need to adjust my diet accordingly, starting Monday. Can’t give away too much info, but all I’ll say is I’m REALLY looking forward to it.
