chalk at gym

Can someone please tell me why I cant find a gym that allows chalk? I have to smuggle my brick of chalk in my gym bag and go into it before every lift that requires chalk, make sure noone is looking and then chalk up. I honestly could not do deadlifts, powercleans, etc without chalk. What is the big deal? The guy at the gym told me it makes a mess. So what IM a bartender at a restaraunt. I clean up peoples messes all of the time. Its part of the job. I pay good money to go to the gym. I need to use chalk.

I’m loling… you could use straps?=)… Find a place in the gym to hide the chalk… places high up where no on ever looks.

I have a solution to this problem. Shave your head, grow a goatee, get huge, look mean, listen to music via headphones, and then see what happens. This is what I did at my school rec center and now they don’t disturb me. Well, I did the above for other reasons but it seemed to work for me.

Maybe tell him that its your coke, and he’ll leave you alone.

I had this problem once before too. I talked to the mananger and explained the importance of lifting safety and painted a mental picture of someone clean and jerking with no chalk and losing grip and he gave in and allowed my chalk. Hey it’s a business and you are a customer, and the customer is always right. Hehe.

Ditch the chalk block and go for the chalk ball. You can get these at outdoor stores like REI or Any Mountain. These balls don’t make a mess and can easily be carried around in your pocket. Just go to the climbing section of rei.com and I’m sure you can see what I’m talking about.

We just started bringing in our chalk - we “smuggle” it in via a rubbermaid container in the gymbag. No one’s ever said anything about it.

"Makes a mess..." - yeah, whatever. Did you slap that guy when he said that to you? I would have.

Had the same problem before. Go to a golf shop and ask for a spray on or powdered product that the golfers use to improve their grip on their golfclubs. These products come in small containers about the size of a breath spray bottle. Unlike lifting chalk, neither of them make any mess whatsoever.

i feel your pain. i have changed gyms when they change their chalk policies. one thing you have to realize is that most gyms don’t want people in there who deadlift and powerclean. scares away the cliental.

Sad to say, but it’s been happening since the mid 80’s. i could go off, but instead
I suggest a home gym, or smaller gym if available. they do exist.

Not only chalk is not allowed in my gym but also olympic and explosive lifts are forbidden.
I do power cleans anyway, make sure that there is no fitness instructors around and do a few quick reps. We have a small freeweights room where most of the fitness instructors don’t go often because all hot chicks work out in the other room with machines.

Tell them that if you can’t use chalk, you will start using pine tar.

I second the chalk ball. pick one up at your local climbing gym, Eastern Mountian Sports or REI.com.
Best of Luck

Here is a link to these chalk balls at rei.com. I’m telling you that these are a perfect solution for gyms that don’t allow chalk. Stick it in your pocket. It doesn’t leak.

You should buy the Total Gym. There is no need for chalk, and you can get a great, total body toning workout in 20 minutes a day, 3 times a week. Also, be sure to eat plenty of soy protein to help with the muscle toning. The key to bigger biceps and a 6-pack are the total gym. Also, be sure to give each of your friends at least 1 hug a day.

That was actually pretty funny.

They won’t let you do any explosive lifts at your gym? Shit, that should be a sin. What gym do you go to?

I use the tupperware method too. If you can’t get them to let you use chalk, what about a rosin bag, like pitchers use? If you do talk them into letting you bring your chalk, don’t F it up… clean it up. use only enought to chalk your hands.
