Ugh, I can’t get used to the new site. Haven’t posted for a bit.

Anyway, today did squats/legs. Instead of hack squats, wanted to try regular squats make sure my technique was still good. Was fine, got up to 155 pounds for 3 sets of 5. Sad that all the hack squats did nothing to make me stronger in squat, not surprised.

After squats, went to the dip stations and did some hangs to stretch my spine. It takes a lot of effort to hold on, but I do it. The guy next to me was doing dips and though I was trying dips. He started talking to me, telling me I should do dips on benches, and then tri expercises with dumbells and this and that and would get strong enough to do dips. I waited till he was done, then said “I’ve been lifting weights for over 45 years, I think I know how this works” and walked off.

this guy was going off a wrong assumption, that if you do easy exercises it makes you stronger so you can do harder exercises and your muscles grow and you can do more. It’s a common misconception. Actually, muscles have very little reaction to exercise. For years I’ve done the exercises and muscles stay the same.

Well played!

Hi folks, haven’t posted much. That’s because nothing happened. STill training, training and eating lots of good food and no gains at all. Sincle deadlifts were going nowhere, I did lots of hard hex bar lifts, then did hard rack pulls. Got to 245 pounds for a couple of reps. Today went back to deadlifts and I actually LOST strength. Pull 185 and nothing, it wouldn’t get off the floor. WTF???

No gains on anything else, just fighting and fighting and the same weights are crushing me. I gained about 10 pounds bodyweight in the last year or two but no strength at all. Which means bodyweight exercises like dips and pullups are practically impossible now. My body has never been strong and never will be.

So have been to gym only a couple times. Trying to keep from losing what little strength I have. Thought I’d share some thoughts on my background.

Back when I started lifting, Joe Weider magazine were the big rage. They showed the big guys, Sergio, Arnold, Lou Ferrigno, Robby Robinson, with jugs of Weider protein and vitamin pills and stuff. It meant if I took that stuff I’d look like them. So I took the protein and stuff. Nothing happened.

Then Arthur Jones came out and said the way to muscles was his machines. So I worked on Nautilus stuff for years. All the gyms had them. Nothing happened.

Then Mike Mentzer told me the secret was working hard. Gotta work really, really hard. So I worked hard. Harder than anyone else in the gym. I was worn out and sore and stuff. Nothing happened.

So for years doing what all the experts kept saying was the path to strength and very little happened. It took years to get my bench to 95 pounds, then years to get to 115, and many more years until I could more or less get 135 off my chest.

Big picture, however, you are doing something healthy for yourself.

So got sick a week ago. Stomach trouble. Some trouble eating. Took several days to get back. Turns out I lost about 10 pounds over 2 or 3 weeks. Wonder if I can get it back.

Made it to the gym first time in over a week. General machine stuff. Leg press, standing calf, chest press, OH press machine (right shoulder hurt, don’t know why) rowing machine. Did a couple pullups, halfway up.

Good job on you pull ups. I can’t get my toes off the ground. Keep at it!
