Cardio Bad for Muscle?

Hey, I am joining the Marines as soon as I turn 18 so I have to be in pretty good shape. I already run almost 4 miles every day on the treadmill by jogging then doing a few sprints here and there. I do this everyday because like I said I am joining the Marines and I need to be in shape.

The only problem is is that my legs are a little sore the rest of the day. Should I change up what I am doing? I also weigh 180lbs but I came down from 236lbs and I would guess I have a low body fat % because the only fat I really have is a tiny bit on my lower back and a tiny layer over my abs.

I basically want to be ripped. Do you think all my cardio is taking away muscle growth? Any advice is appreciated.

I got done with Army Infantry basic in October, while its not the same program as the marines I’d guess it couldn’t be that different.

I would recommend working on push-ups, sit ups mostly. If you really want to get an edge up I would say get a back pack, load it down, and go for long fast walks (I dunno if the marines go on alot of ruck marches in basic but we sure did).

BTW, unless your really skinny, don’t worry about gaining any weight for basic, the work and diet you’ll follow will take most of it off away anyway.

EDIT: Also, if you don’t like your legs being sore, your gunna have a long terrible time in the military.

My legs being sore doesn’t bother me because I am used to it. But the Marines do different kinds of training in basic. They do some running here and there but thats about it thats different, oh and some more combat training.

haha, running here and there? Dude, you do a SHITLOAD of running and PT in Marine Corps boot camp. Do not worry about gaining muscle as you will more than likely lose it when you go.

Do a lot of running and bodyweight stuff. Give my regards to the quarter deck.

Nothing will prepare you for boot camp. No matter what you think it will be like, it will not be like that.

Semper Fi

Ya, I have been doing quite a bit of bodyweight exercises. I can do 150 pushups non-stop and 30 pull ups non stop all the way down all the way up.

Tex,
I suggest that you start running. Start with 30 minutes morning and Night and work up to 60 minutes.
Around lunch time do pushups (5 sets of 25) and sit ups (5 sets of 25). In the afternoon do your pull ups (5 * Max reps)
Every day.

Eat - In the mess you get 20 minutes to eat your meals so learn to eat quick, very quick, get as much nutrition as possible. Don’t waste time with low nutrition foods like salad - get meat and carbs.

Boot will make you lean.

Remember it is the hardest thing you will ever do but Once a Marine your a Marine for life.
