ok, ive done a real good job in my most recent fat loss phase. Using androsol, ive lost 12lbs in 25 days using the “steroid dieting” approach. 1600 cal, 50g carbs, 30g fish oil, 300 g of protein. First off, would this be considered a “ketogenic” diet? ive seen that phrase thrown out a bit, and to be honest with you, i dont really know what it means, sorry to say. ive also read the forum for the last few days, and seen people discussing the importance of coming off an extreme diet like this, and possibly “carbing up”. can someone please explain this process to me in full detail. ie. how to do it!! or possibly point me into the right place. has there been an article here on t-mag about how to effectively do this? please help, ive dieted so hard these last few weeks, i really dont want to screw it up. thank you all so much!!
bumpin this up…my diet ends in a few days, so im in pretty desparate need of some help here. i hope im not coming off like a lazy ass in my question; like i said, even if you could point me in the right direction it would be of help. i read something in appetite for construction about coming off a diet, but it didnt really seem to apply to me.
Whether your diet, at 50g carbs/day can be called ketogenic could be disputed. The term ‘ketogenic’ refers to being ‘in ketosis’, which is a state where body goes through a metabolic process where it supplies the brain with ketones (a fat by-product) rather than glucose. To speak of all this technical stuff is unnecessary. You don’t need to carb up, it won’t impact your results at all if you don’t, but if you do carb up, the increase in water weight will discourage you a lot, since the scale will rise several pounds. Carbing up, or acheiving something called glycogen supercompensation happens when the body is depleted of glycogen as a result of being in a low carb diet. All it means is that you eat a lot of carbs to restore your glycogen levels. I think I got it all there, hope this helps.
I’ve done keto and to get in ketosis, most generally believe you must keep carb intake below 20-25 grams a day for about a week and once in ketosis, keep carbs below 30 grams a day to stay in ketosis. I always attempted to keep carbs around 20 grams on keto diet. To keep carbs under 20 grams is like eating no carbs at all except the little bit in your whey, etc. I would also eat a little bit of raw broccoli or cauliflower which have almost no carbs - all the rest was protein or healthy fats. Anything over 30 grams is just low carb diet which is what I’m currently doing also.
Thanks a lot KP, i appreciate it…ok, if you dont feel i should carb up, then what would your recommendation be? youre right, i definitly would be discouraged by seeing myself gain a large amount of the weight back.
John Berardi wrote a real good article on this exact topic a few months back…just do a search for it under previous issues
dave, yes, i believe i read that article as i said earlier. i think it was in one of the earlier appetite for construction articles. the probelem with that article, is that berardi’s suggestions were geared for someone who was in ketosis for a year! so my needs could quite possibly be very diffferent.
If you do carb up, alternate between high glycemic carb and low glycemic carb meals. Five meals of carbs only and one protein meal like 8-16 oz. of salmon or something. Keep water intake high, like two gallons and keep vit. c high. Do this for just a day and see how you respond. Carbing is not gonna make or break ya in the long run, so experiment and find out what works for you.
i was always told that water intake must be minimal on the carb-up? arggggg, this is confusing:-)!
I was reading your e-mail about the diet you were finishing (the 1600 cal 300 grams of protein). How did that work for you? Did you take the flax seed oil with it? What about lifting? I’ve been following Charles Paloquin’s Methods book and have put on 20 lbs of mostly muscle in three months, but now I want to begin cutting up for the summer. I’d really appreciate your feedback on this. How did the Androsol work for you? Thanks for you input.
If I were you I would gradually increase the calories until I was at maintenance level again. Add carbs slowly each day until they are back to a normal % of your daily totals. Take anywhere from a few days to a week or so to make this transition. As with any diet, you could see a gain of a few pounds in a short amount of time as you return to eating normally, but don’t worry, these are not fat lbs.
Since you weren’t really technicality in a keto diet, I wouldn’t suggest a carb-up, though I could give you a good link if you’re still interested.
How did that work for you?
Well Jason, i have no complaints about the diet. all i can really say is that its tough, but it works well. i would recommend it to anyone. i like the fact that u get to eat real food as opposed to the fat fast diet. i didnt use flaxseed, i used fish oil caps as the diet recommended. I didnt use any special training routine to speak of…u put on 20 pounds of muscle in 3 months with poliquins methods? how is that possible? well if it is, congratulations, thats awesome. please describe your training in more detail as id love to know. The Androsol worked fine, however id probably opt for the MAG-10 in the future.
thanks a lot KP, i will take your advice in gradually adding carbs/calories. what about fat though? gradually too, i assume. and yes, id love to read any info that you have. thanks again for your help.
