Everybody respects that and you often experience cars wheezing through at 120 mph and the cops do not go after you for it as long as you do not abuse it.

Not quite sure where you heard that but the Police probably wont bother you under 80 mph, can happen but its unlikely, anything over that and your getting stopped, points on the licence and Ã?£60 fine. You get caught doing 120 and that’s licence losing speed and pretty sure there isnt a police car in the land that wont pull you over for it.
Oh and no one respects the outside lane is only for overtaking, People drive like fucking morons over here, Yesterday I passed a guy in the middle lane of the motorway 60MPH, with a clear lane inside, with his Ipad behind the steering wheel blocking all his instruments checking his fucking facebook page.[/quote]
I got this from driving regularly for work on the highway.
A 60 GBP is far better fine than 191 GBP at today’s exchange rate.
I regularly went through patches of 85 to 90 without a care in the world because my personal experience there was that there were no cop cars waiting in a trap to “catch” you speeding.
Some cops here will get you for going 71 - that is what I was comparing with primarily.
In England I even had a highway officer tell me to be careful because people drove like crazy and it was obviously not a police priority to track down on people who went up to 120 mph MOMENTARILY when overtaking.
I had a lot of fast cars overtake me and shake my car and did not see any cops after them of see them stopped to get a ticket.
I never meant to say one drives for long stretches at 120 mph ( I would have to be able to be doing the same thing to observe this! ) but I have experience people do it on the overtaking lane.
This was three and a half years ago and at least during my working shift I observed people did respect the outside lane as an overtaking lane and I had never seen anyone on their phones in the way I see here.
Perhaps things have changed since no body seems to be able to live without checking their facebook.
And the guy you were talking about was not on the outside lane - which was precisely my point: the outside lane was still free for you to overtake him.
My friend in London does tell me that things have changed a lot for the worse in England.
But as Maximus already stated in another post, yes one could get up to high speeds ( not maintain it ) in Europe and not be seen as a $300 ticket for the police department to meet their revenue.
