Can't Take It Anymore: I Never Sleep

Try my scheduling thing. Put everything you need to do for the next day in there. It makes everything seem less daunting if it’s organized (to me, anyway). I would also suggest you use some “get shit done” lists. Put everything you need/want to do on there. I put stuff like lifting on my lists even though I know I’d go anyway.

Just do something man! Chances are it’s just a rough patch of time, and it’ll get better soon.

I feel your pain about working/school/everything. I was extremely busy last semester. Taught 20 students a week, practiced 2-3hours/day. 18 credit hours. Worked two other jobs outside of teaching. Sometimes you just gotta not think too much about it and get your shit done.

This is great advice.

Whenever you can, make a list of tasks that need to be done on that day. Sort of like brainstorming. Then categorize them with letters corresponding to their importance.

A: MUST be done that day
B: Ideally completed on that day, but could be completed the next day
C: Needs to get done at some point, but not necessarily within the next day or even week.

That is how I do things for particularly hellish days. The 3~ minutes it takes to make the list pays you back many times over. With the list completed you can focus specifically on what you need to get done instead of thinking about what you’ll have to do next. Also, checking off the tasks as you get them done is satisfying for some reason. :stuck_out_tongue:

I hope this helps.

Good luck, Zephead. I’ve been following your log- good stuff. Keep pushing on in life and training.

Doing the list thing helps me sleep as well. Takes all the crap off my mind for the night.

I totally feel the same way about checking crap off. That’s why I put stuff like lifting on there: it’s awesome to cross stuff off.

Can’t you take public transit?

I got a 4 month pass for 80$. Student rate.

2 things re: schoolwork,as I graduated HS in june:

  1. If you’re taking a ton of AP courses, consider dropping a few, especially a class like pysch, which doesn’t get you a ton of credit. Stick with AP’s like Calc or hard sciences or even english lit, which will be MUCH more useful come college than psychology.

2)You probably know this, but learn to work smarter, not harder. At least for me in high school, it wasn’t completely necessary to do ALL of the reading that was assigned for ap bio, ect ect. Figure out what assignments, ect are important and do those.

Don’t feel that you have to read everything assigned and do every optional problem set–sometimes, you can do just fine from reading sparknotes. It seems like you’re a junior, so you should be getting a sense of what you need to do to get an A, and what is superfluous. Do just that, and you can save alot of time.

Meditate, do it while you lay in bed. Just lay there and breath in and out. Breath a thought in, enbrace and exhale thought out. Just lay there and breath in and out, thought in / thought out. It takes a little practise and it doesn’t mean you’ll sleep but it will relax and clear your mind.

It sounds to me like your mind is just way to busy. Meditating will help you get rid of the garbage that clutters your mind. Food for thought.

Get married, start your own business, have a kid or two… then tell me about your insomnia.

Seriously though, there’s a lot of good advice given here. Has your lack of sleep been detrimental to your life overall? Sometimes the actual worrying about sleep can make it difficult to fall asleep. I know it’s hard, but try to chill out a bit. Life really doesn’t get any easier. It’s usually the way we perceive and react to it that makes it unbearable at times.

Have a cup of sleepytime tea before bed.

I feel where you are coming from…
I go to ‘school,’ as well(its online) I get up at 5am too…

I think having some downtime before trying to go to sleep is important…your mind needs to relax! Or, like others have said, do something boring…the history channel always works for me! (no offense to anyone) :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Not to hijack your thread, but I’ve been feeling the same way… except mine is like this,

I had to change my workout schedule, because I can never fall asleep after I get off work/get home from the gym.

I don’t get home til 8, then I shower, make dinner, etc. I can lay in bed from 10:30 and not fall asleep til 2 or 3. This is M W F. However, on T and Th, I come home at 6:30, eat, and pass out at 8.

I fucking hate it. My T and Th are are waste because I am completely exhausted and tired that I don’t get shit done, and my M W F are my gym days (set in stone, I go on Sat too but its cardio/WS4SB3 ‘vanity day’, so not as important). I don’t like sleeping my weekend away either.

Mine isn’t even a no time to sleep issue really, its that I am running out of time from catching up on sleep. I should try Z-12, if I could afford it…

Or you could do a half hour of math before bed and wake up with the answers if you’re the dreaming type.

If you just don’t have enough hours in the day, there isn’t much you can do but cut commitments if things get too heavy. If it’s a case of insomnia but the hours are there, then try the advice on this thread, particularly the stuff related to sleep hygiene (google that term).

Many of the ideas seem stupid, trivial or innefective but if you give them several weeks of consistent practice they can make a difference. The same goes with power napping or meditating; both took some time for me to learn to perform effectively. They both help me though since I’m pretty constantly sleep deprived from schedule even when I’m not having issue with insomnia.

One other matter-- if you are having issues with chronic insomnia then you may need to back off your training in the short term since chronic “overextension” (recovery deficit that’s not made up) will seriously disrupt sleep. When I was your age that was a major source of insomnia for me until I learned to assess more realistically the recovery capacity of my body.

I never sleep anymore, and when I do it’s shitty, and short lived. I work 20 hours a week, I start school at 7AM, I have to wake up at 5:20 or earlier. I never have alone time, I never have any down time. I have more homework then my work scheduele permits, I had to do a human braincoloring book for AP psych. Doing stupid shit like that when I could be sleeping is driving me insane. I’ve battled depression since before my teen years, and I’m going insane.

god damnit, what do I do? I just started the school year.[/quote]

Didn’t you say on another thread that you thought you had sleep apnea? Did you go to the doctor yet?

Try ZMA, Z-12 and/or melatonin before bed to help you get the most out of the sleep you do get.

Work on time management and goal setting.

Learn to relax and maintain your perspective on life.

You have over 3000 posts here. Turn off the TV/PC and take a nap!

yeah man I feel ya on this one.
time management, cut the things that can be cut without comprimising your goals.

After a long-ass work day I feel like I should get to do something I actually want to do.
I had to make the decision between entertainment and sleep, so I skip the hour of tv when I finaaly get home and just head straight for the sack. my recovery time is better for it.

good luck man.
