Canned Salmon

Well, after reading some people talking about canned salmon I decided to give it a try. So I ask you this: Is it normal for there to be skin, disgusting looking white things and other assorted colors, textures and flavors in the can? I mean this stuff smelled and tasted absolutly rancid. I only ate a few bites and threw it away. What brand do you guys eat? It seems to be many canned food products are pretty poor quality (I’ve had some really shitty looking tuna and chicken)…the only tuna I eat is Starkist, and I don’t know if they make salmon.

I have no idea about the salmon but the only canned tuna that I can stand is solid white, albacore. That salmon sounds so nasty :[~

Either chicken of the sea or starkist makes one. It comes in same type of can with salmon color highlites. I would mix it with 1/2 a can of tuna.

Yeah, that stuff is normally in there. It’s just the way salmon grows, with skin on the outside and bones in the middle. You might try the more expensive sockeye at $6 a can. They might only put the meat in those. It’s all good for you though.

I too have found all canned salmon too be totally disgusting, and I would only eat it if I was starving somewhere and had nothing else to eat! I think that white stuff is bones or scales, not sure though. I eat a steak of fresh grilled salmon once or twice a week instead for dinner…why torture yourself? Get your omega-3’s from a handful of walnuts or a spoonful of flax oil.

I don’t know about brands over there, but there is often skin and bones and spinal columns and the like in salmon. The way it’s cooked means you can eat the bones. Mmm… bones.

Say, there wasn’t a picture of a cat on the label was there? Avoid those.

Try to get some fresh stuff. Yes, it costs more but it looks alot better.

I hope you mixed something with the salmon. If you didn’t I don’t blame you for hating it. I just tried my first can of Chicken Of The Sea Red Salmon Traditional Style. It states on the label that the bones and fish skin are completely edible. I chopped up the whole can thoroughly and added 1 Tbsp. Miracle Whip and a handful of Kay’s Naturals Protein Chips. Actually very tatsy. Nasty smelling, but very tatsy.

Let me tell you about my recent experience with canned pink salmon (BumbleBee brand). After having posted a question or two about the Omega profiles on this forum, I bought a case of pink salmon (it being about half as expensive as the red stuff). I was initially put off by the spinal parts, etc. in the cans, but hey, I can basically eat anything. So I mixed it with some other stuff and ate four or five cans over as many days. Everything was fine. Then I had a can for breakfast, and immediately felt a little “odd”. The pain in my stomach grew throughout the day, until by 6:00 or so I could barely get out of bed. Yup, it was food poisoning, big time. Around 7:00 I finally was able to hurl (and I do mean HURL) the shit out of my system, dropping about a kilo of weight in two minutes. (No exaggeration, the fucking salmon had put my stomach into such a state that nothing else would pass through, so basically my entire day’s food came up.) (And yes, I weighed myself afterwards, just to see.)

To top it off, I went to a party later where there was a guy who had worked in a cannery one summer, and he basically laughed at me (pityingly) for even having tried pink salmon. The stuff he said about how it's canned, etc. . . well, suffice to say I'll never ever IN MY LIFE order pink salmon again.

Morale of the story: if you’re going to buy salmon in a can, go with the red stuff. They flash-freeze it and generally take a lot more care about how they pack it. Yeah, it’s more expensive, but then you won’t waste half of it on your floor.

I tried to make burgers and it was still gross. Try Jack Mackeral, that is so nasty I almost threw up when I ate it. I’m poor, but not that poor. Maybe if I can just put it all in a blender and down it before I realize what I’m doing. Maybe with a funnel down to my stomach.

Hey, fellas, some pretty nasty s–t isn’t it? Well, I haven’t had any for a while but I am a tuna freak. Anyway, I used to make salmon burgers with the canned stuff. They turned out pretty well, so I tried the same recipe with tuna and they tasted better. So I haven’t had salmon since. The recipe?
1 can salmon (tuna)
1 egg white (or whole egg)
1/2 cup of rice
mustard, seasonings, whatever to taste

Just mix up the above and form two patties. You can cover 'em with bread crumbs. Then just throw 'em on a Foreman grill or a skill on the range and you’re in business.

Quit being a wimp! Close your eyes and make beleive your eating pussy.Ha ha. You are right about salmon and jack mackerel, thats some nasty stuff. It will grow on you though, heres the biggest problem I have found with this stuff, after you eat it your breath and hands and clothes smell like rotting fish.I had a freind tell me(right after I ate some) that I smelled like I just had eaten some dirty foul smellin’ pussy.
