Can you get stronger while on a caloric deficit?

I cannot begin to explain why, but from my experiences and observations, I cannot think of a person who knew what he was doing who didn’t consume carbohydrates on the day of the powerlifting meet or bodybuilding contest. Both contestant groups consumed carbohydrates to optimize their “performance.”

If you ARE interested in thinking of one person that did that, there is Robert Sikes on the bodybuilding side of the equation.

This, for me, is the problem summarized.

I didn’t realize there was a problem at all, haha. @RT_Nomad just mentioned that number specifically, so I met that number. I suppose I could go down his client list if there was a desire for more names. I don’t follow much bodybuilding though.

Been doing peri-workout Karbolyn. Honestly… it’s really difficult to say it helps or doesn’t. Did Prowler drags yesterday… likely helps there to a degree

I always ask - Did you ever train sans carbs long enough to see the difference?

And is it really the carbs … placebo … something else … ? Hard to say honestly.

How much gear are you on?

500 mg of Prop a week

Hmmmm… given it’s primarily the creatine phosphate energy system I’m curious to the rationale.

Oh yeah, the endocrine system!

Maybe carbs are “essential” to some people because they have trouble maintaining their hormones without them.

Excitation Contraction Coupling optimization maybe…

Of course you are.

This is why you feel great going balls out on zero carbs. The majority (probably all) of people with muscle who go zero carb are on gear, TRT, or built their muscle with carbs and/or gear.

It is weird you literally just repeat whatever Paul Carter posts on the topic of training but, on nutrition/carbs you don’t agree?

“Excitation Contraction Coupling optimization”

In one of the interviews PC mentions this he also talks about how Keto/zero carbs is no good for muscle growth.

When Joe Means won Most Muscular at the 1976 Mr America with incredible definition, we heard he was eating only tuna fish and lettuce. That was most likely a gross exaggeration, but clearly an extremely low carbohydrate diet.

I tried extremely low carbohydrates and got weaker and looked flatter. Getting weaker was psychologically challenging for me. And looking flatter was unacceptable.

When I started my contest diet (and AAS) I expected to get stronger every week the first 6 to 7 weeks. IMO, carbohydrates made that possible for me. I got stronger and looked better every week.

BTW, I have competed in many contests over three decades, to the tune of about 3 per year.

I think Vince Gorinda had a good approach as far as the “maximum definition/steak and eggs diet” went by using carbs in a cyclical format. Seemed like a good compromise.

I know this is anecdotal, but the only professional bodybuilder I cooked for up to the competition went zero carb for all his requested meals. And then was eating chicken breasts with strawberry jam backstage. He was crying because it tasted so good.

He was on gear also. I don’t know what specifically.

PC on his “low calorie” approach from last year

Ya…it’s the 500 mg of Test and not a lifetime of very dedicated, very difficult training and trial and error. Derp.

It’s weird you literally just offer a condescending flippant douchebag reply assuming I don’t actually study things myself, have a pretty decent level of physiological / biological understanding of the things that he and Beardsley also promote.

I’ve stated numerous times you can build muscle without carbs… I also stated that perhaps the reason why ECC is possibly more efficient with carbs is due to the cellular hydration factor which can also be achieved via electrolyte loading.

As regards your claim they built muscle on carbs while running gear… is it your position that it was the magical carbs that built the muscle?

Golden Era guys ran pretty low carb all week with weekend re-feeds. Also massive physiques.

Every 5th day, iirc. Pasta or Rum Raisin ice cream. Gag.

I don’t necessarily agree with it, but Vince was a genius in many regards.

Electrolytes keep me “full” looking. And the glycogen your body replenishes on it’s own seems sufficient for me.
