Can Do More Chin-ups If My Feet Touch Something

I just read this thread again. This is low-key one of the stupidest things I’ve ever read on these forums. And that’s saying a lot.

Maybe I’m being a dumbass here, but I can’t figure out why this thread is considered so dumb.

Personally, I can’t do as many deadstop chinups/pullups as regular because I don’t get the stretch reflex at the eccentric–>concentric. It’s akin to being weaker on pin press or Anderson squat for me. I feel like OP is probably the exception and has a reasonable question. Sounds to me like poor eccentric control on chinups. What am I missing here?

…because your feet touching the floor isn’t a dead hang pullup. Even if they don’t touch hard, it’s like saying “I can Bench more reps if a spotter is touching the bar.” Of course you can. A pullup isn’t a dead hang pullup if your feet are touching the ground.

So instead of writing “I can do 6 deadhang pullups if my feet touch but if they don’t I can’t get two”, you would just say “I can only do one deadhang pullup.”

In general, how can someone not understand why having their feet touch the ground on a pullup would make the movement easier?

Because he’s almost certainly pushing off the ground, and perhaps not realizing it, kind of how you can push off with your ‘other’ foot when you’re stepping onto a box, so you’re not really performing a one leg step up when you’re trying to isolate one leg. In other words, he’s just jumping. Occam’s razor here, that’s the easiest way to explain tripling his performance.
