Cal's Big Log

holy shit that is QUITE the trip. yaaaaaay for you! guess all the fun is on the east coast, huh? ;/
have a super awesome time…duh. that’s a no-brainer! loved that vid you posted of the other coaster trip…

i’m in the early stages of planning a trip to Germany fr the end of september. it’s business but i’m going to get a few extra days in. i know you are a royal brit and all, but, have you any recommendations for Deutschland?

Depends which part you’re going to. I’ve been to Germany several times so I know a few places. What are you planning?

Re: the East Coast - PA and OH have the most parks but there are great parks all over the US (well, aside from the north - don’t think there’s much going on in the Dakotas etc). I believe the 2012 trip is West Coast. My last visit there to do parks was 1998 so I’m due for a trip back. The last big tour I did was 2008 and that went from Texas up through the middle to Minnesota - that was a long trip! (Really fun though).
The club does a big US trip every 2 years and a big trip somewhere else on alternate years. 2007 was Scandinavia and 2009 was Korea and Japan. Both were awesome. I really love my coasters!

Are you going to Busch Gardens or Kings Dominion? I forget.

We went to Busch Gardens in Oct and there was a coaster there that was the scariest thing I’ve EVER been on…holy crap. This one:

I couldn’t even keep my eyes open!!

That looks like a blast, Myrtle beach might be a bit warm this time fo year. not the blazing hot it will be in a few weeks but pretty warm.

We’re doing both, MiM. When you said you were scared I thought you might mean Griffon! It’s a Bolliger & Mabillard Dive Machine (company and model name) - we had the first of those at Alton Towers back in 1998. Ours, though, by virtue of being a prototype, is a LOT smaller - one drop into a hole in the ground and you’re done. Additionally, as Alton Towers is a heritage site they are not allowed to build any rides above tree height so they have to dig down if they want to provide thrills. Still, the wait at the top is quite tense…heh.

that ride looks fucking STELLAR!!!

p.s. Cedar Point. period. best coasters!

Yeah I need to get back to Cedar Point…but I can’t do everything every trip, sadly.

I couldn’t motivate myself to train this morning - I seem to have a problem with the gym, lately. I think a lot of it is because I can’t do the big three due to my back and shoulder issues, so I’m left doing “other stuff” which doesn’t excite me as much.

However, I ate a lot yesterday, which was also a day off, so I forced myself out of the house around 2pm. Normally I train on an empty stomach (after waking) so having the food I ate three hours ago repeat on me was unpleasant. I seem to take an eternity to digest anything. Ugh. Anyway…

Death Triad

Chins: 4, 3, 2
Narrow decline push-ups (box + 5 risers): 10, 10, 10
12kg kettlebell swings: 20, 20, 20

Swings were hard today - legs just felt tired. I think they’re needing more than 48 hours to recover from the sprints. I guess that much the same muscles are used for both.

Military Press

Bar x 10
25kg x 5
3 x 30kg x 5

Every set was followed by one pull-up (as in a real one, not a chin).

Lat Pulldowns

35kg x 10
40kg x 8
45kg x 8
50kg x 4

First time on 50kg for these. Guess I was pooped.

I also tried to do some dumbell rows but only for 5 reps at 26kg so went off and did a lot of stretching instead. My shoulders didn’t feel so hot, so I thought it best not to push it.

Looks like a great work out, even if it can’t include the big three. Sorry it felt like a struggle but it’s great that you got up and out and did it. We all know that’s 1/2 the battle esp when you have to force yourself to go. Keep up the great work!

Its a good thing you motivated in the PM or I would have let you have it. I will steal that Death Triad presently.

My squats are depressing me, but I can’t dwell on it while doing the ten-million rehab exercises that are designed to help that poor lift.

I LOVE coasters that drop straight down. Best if done from the very front seats in the coaster. YEAH!

What an itinerary for your trip! Hope you’re not too beat after all that.

Nice training too, despite lacking motivation. That ‘death triad’ looks very intense.

I was a lazy bitch yesterday, despite it being a public holiday. I just sat on my arse, played Mass Effect 2 and inhaled food (damn PMS…). So today I made up for it by hauling my lazy arse out of bed at 5am and running 6 miles. Felt good, actually - it’s nice and cool at that time, and there are not many people about. If I just get out of bed and go, I can get it done. Problem is if I think about having a cuppa first, checking forums on the PC and whatnot…then I’ll start to find reasons not to do it. I actually enjoy running, even if I’m not a natural at it. It’s fresh air, trees, wildlife and a chance to think (without the distraction of my damned computer).

I can’t believe the DOMS I had yesterday from Sunday’s workout. Is it possible for the medialis to get sore from kettlebell swings? I know the hams and butt do but my medialis were really tender when I foam rolled them. Lats were sore also, but that’s hardly surprising.

Good for you!

Walks are like that for me…not 6 mile runs(you crazy running people!) :stuck_out_tongue:

I would think the medialis would be working if you lock your knees out at the top of the swing, so they could get sore from that, sure.

That makes sense. I seem to manage to get good leg stimulation just from KB swings and sprints, which is just as well given that I can’t squat.

Kimba - you and me both! I know my femurs tend to rotate internally - I have to concentrate really hard to get my legs to work as they are supposed to. Pain in the arse! (Literally, given my piriformis issues).

Awesome pushups and runs…

No trip to Brooklyn for the cyclone???
you have to ride it.
It is wooden ancient and rickety- good for one death a year.

You have to do it, unless you already did.

HAH! ^ too true. Best 10 bucks (used to be only 5 btw) you’ll spend in the city. And the Cyclone is ONLY terrifying b/c you’re not sure if you’ll make it out alive.

Jealous of trip. That coaster looks incredible!!

The “death triad” - hahah! You got that right.

Good on you for that early morning run. That is impressive.

I always get heart burn when i eat too close to working out. I feel ya.

Ah, the Cyclone is a mean old lady - I know her well! For an old coaster, it still packs a hell of a punch. It can be rough but the trick is not to sit in a wheel seat. Sit in the 2nd or 3rd row of each car and you’ll have a more comfortable ride. My favourite seat is the 3rd row of the rear car.

We’re not visiting Coney Island this time around which is a bit of a shame as they’ve just put a lot of money into revitalising it, with the new Luna Park (the Cyclone and Wonder Wheel are still separate attractions). It’s very nice to see, given the threat it was under.

Anyway, have felt like I’m coming down with a cold again but I dragged myself to the gym. Did a bit…not too much though as I wasn’t feeling my best.

Superset

Chins: 4, 3, 3, 2
Decline push-ups: 10, 10, 10, 10

(Arms were really failing on the last push-ups. I do 'me with elbows tucked in so they put a lot of emphasis on triceps, oh, and feet on a step).

Lat Pulldowns

35kg x 10
40kg x 10
45kg x 8
50kg x 6 < better than last time

Dumbell Rows

2 x 8 x 24kg

I’m really sucking at these lately. I can’t believe I was doing 30kg rows earlier in the year. I think doing them after all the chins and pull-downs pre-exhausts my lats. I’ll have to try doing them first next time (of course that’ll be after my holiday, I expect. Unless one of the hotels has a gym…but with so many early starts and late finishes I don’t think there will be time).

Did some hypers, reverse hypers and shitty GH raises (you really can’t do these properly on a 45 degree back extension bench) then some much needed stretching.

Should say that one of the guys on the coaster trip is a former bodybuilder-turned physio, and was Dorian Yates’ training partner for a while. So if any of my injuries goes horribly wrong in the US, I’ll have an expert on hand. (He spent most of the last trip fixing someone’s knackered feet, poor bastard!)

I hope you can get some gym time in. That will make returning from the trip and back-to-gym time much less painful.

My rows also have stagnated. As an accessory exercise in 5/3/1, they get pretty short shrift at the end of my workout.
