Cal's Big Log 3D - Attack of the Giant Arse

Cal! You crazy woman! I see very great progress in that cartwheel video. You are controlled, your body position is quite good. My only correction (not that you asked) is to watch your hand placement. You’re stretching forward nicely, but you’re still reaching behind you. Those hands need to stay in line with your feet.

Nice training. Seems energized in here. I likes it.

Not so much energy this weekend, I’m afraid. I’ve had a scratchy throat the last two days and feel tired. Since I’ve only just had a cold I guess I’m a bit post-viral, or else another bug is doing the rounds and is attacking my immune system as we speak. I was so tired after school I went to bed at 9.30pm on Thursday and 9pm last night - it was that sort of bone tired where I couldn’t even sit in front of the computer - and this morning I slept until almost 6am (though, as always, I did wake up once to pee).

However, I’m also feeling really beaten up - got a lot of aches and pains. I have to roll my back as soon as I get home from school and that is usually accompanied by all manner of clicks and pops. My achilles is also not getting better. It has become a real problem.

So whilst I did go to the gym today, it wasn’t a lovely energetic session like last weekend.

Warm-up: hypers, reverse hypers, clams, step-overs.

Superset: MPs/Squats

Bar x 15/25
25kg x 12/20
30kg x 11 (+1)/15
32.5kg x 8 (+1)/12
35kg x 6 (+1)/10
37.5kg x 3/10
40kg x 1/10

I was pleased with the rep PRs at 30, 32.5 and 35kg on the millies. I figure if I can get more reps in this range then my 1 rep max should go up eventually.

Not so happy about the squats. On the last set I noticed a pain in my lower back on the left-hand side. I continued so I got all my 10 reps but decided not to go heavier today. Realised this is actually in the SI joint area. I hope it’s soft tissue and not the actual SI joint but I suspect it might be. Gah. I really need to see Nicole but I’m really strapped for cash at the moment due to the upcoming holiday and the fact I have a shit-load of bills coming in March.

So, moved to bench.

Superset: Bench Press/T-Bar Row

Bar x 20 (bench only)
30kg x 10/20kg x 10
40kg x 10/25kg x 10
45kg x 10/30kg x 8

Benching was bothering my back and another new pain cropped up in my left upper arm when I tried to keep my elbows tucked on bench. If I let 'em flare out (I am still using a slight-more-than-shoulder-width grip rather than wide bodybuilder style) the pain wasn’t there. WTF is this shit?!

At this point I was thinking, OK, body is not happy today. I was even noticing things like my wrists ached a bit from holding the bar on the squat and my right knee was aching as well. So decided, as I’d been in the gym over an hour already (those squat/milly supersets tend to last 40-50 minutes) I thought I’d wrap it up. Did a couple of high rep things for my delts:

Lateral Raises (4kg DBs) x 50
Rear Delt Flyes (2kg DBs) x 50

Had a go at some handstands and a 5 or 6 cartwheels but they were getting worse the longer I went so I just did some stretching and called it quits.

I picked up some more Chest-Eze from the chemist as I used my last one this morning and banged down a couple of ibuprofen now I’m home. Also got a hot water bottle on my lower back in the hope it’ll help.

Sorry this session is considerably less amusing than the pervious few. I am tired and beat-up but I feel pretty good about my rep PRs on the military press so that’s one good thing at least.

I’ll circuit train tomorrow unless I feel like death, but no deadlifting for a bit. That would be idiotic.

nice work on those millies pr

my little girls wrists are always achey - you could look into getting some wrist wraps if this keeps up.

Cal: Sorry you’re feeling icky and achey. It’s always disappointing coming off a good session to have such a difficult one. Still, nice pressing.

I’m finding (especially with gymnastics) I do well there every other week. Good, bad, good. It’s weird. But, ahh suck is life with limits.

Not every session is going to be stellar.

My wrists are pretty painful on occasion, and sometimes my pinky and ring finger go numb. I’ve found that putting my palm on the wall and then dragging it up until there’s a stretch helps, also making two fists, putting knuckles together on the ground then slowly starigetning your arms is a good stretch too.

If that’s too confusing let me know and I can find a video.

I do stretch my wrists out - picked up some tricks when I went to gymnastics class. I have a bit of carpal tunnel in the right from using a mouse but it’s nothing major. More a case that every joint seems pissed off today. I’ve popped four ibuprofen (two lots of two, not all at once) and taken extra Vit C to bring down any inflammation that might be there. My back is way more of a concern than my wrists, to be honest. Going to do some TENS to see if that helps. Ugh.

Nadia - yeah, that often seems to be the case with me. But I’m thinking it’s a combination of factors: cold season, freezing weather, and I’m likely pre-menstrual as well. Whilst my last period lasted 15 days, if this cycle is back to my usual 25 days, I’m only four days off the next one. (I’m hoping it’ll be a longer cycle though. Fucking perimenopause - you never know where you are once you get into your 40s).

Good job on the PR!

So the weather is shitty over in England too?? I never knew what kinda weather they really had goin’ on there.

Your cycle sounds totally f**ked up. Do you get horrible mood swings at all though?? Even with all the other PMS bull, I find the emotional rollercoster stuff just the worst.

Not much. Last month, before the ultra-period, I got a bit depressed. I know my PMS was worse than usual because my boobs hurt. My guess is that I skipped ovulation that cycle and it messed me up. Usually it doesn’t affect me much more than being more tired than normal, a bloated tummy and an urge to eat anything that can’t run away fast enough.

Seriously. After that bloody wench left you, she came to visit me more than a week early. Not expecting her, I false started on my diet multiple times and a had a nice little virtual pms session with my pullup guy. Normally, I know to be nice to myself and to keep my mouth shut the few days before. Forewarned is forearmed. I guess I’m on notice now. Anyday. Anytime. Mother fucker.

Haha! So ominous. From where I’m from, it’s 3 cheers (plus with sighs of relief) each month your period comes. I hope I don’t regret all that negative energy I’ve put toward the baby making some day.

Cal, I seriously just love this log. I had a minor pee incident today and thought of you. Intensified kegel training begins NOW!

Cartwheels are looking great, by the way. I can definitely see tons of improvement from the old video. Well done.

I sure do hope you aren’t getting sick again. At this point (barely getting over the first nasty) were I to come down with something new, I’d be seriously depressive.

Any sort of rep PR you get whilst sick gets DOUBLE POINTS!

x2. You’re just all sorts of badass.

I didn’t feel good on Sunday. I’ve been feeling tired, scratchy throat and sneezy but now (Monday evening) I’m feeling a fair bit better, thankfully. However, I decided to take two days off the gym. If it had just been a matter of feeling a bit grotty, I’d have gone, but my back has been very sore as well. Back is something you don’t take chances with.

It seems to be a case of two steps forward, one step back with me. It’s a bind. But I’m going to train tomorrow (albeit carefully) and see how it goes.

GAWD I AM SO GLAD I DO NOT GET MY PERIOD. Fawk.

Cal I am SO SORRY you deal with so many BUGS. Must be so frustating. I could not handle it. Do you take zinc supps by any chance? I’m just racking my brain for anything that may help.

I take ZMA, so yeah. I guess it’s the downside of working with kids.

A former roommate of mine was a kindergarden teacher.

Sometimes she wouldn’t get it but I WOULD!?!?

I got sick more during those years man. you’re right. thats what it is.

Sounds like your roomie was a Typhoid Mary!

I felt a bit better this morning - both myself and my back. Not 100%, but way better than Sunday. I wasn’t really psyched to train (yeah, that bitch is going to pay me a visit again, I know it) but I took some ephy and caffeine and got myself to the gym. Avoided anything that would cause me to mess my back up more so no overhead pressing, no benching (too much arch on both), no deadlifts or squats. Here’s what I did.

Warm-up: hypers, reverse hypers, clams, some SI joint release stuff.

Superset: Body rows/push-ups:

3 x 10/10

Superset: Chins (supinated)/Decline push-ups (feet on step):

3 x 2/10

Chins are down a bit. I have put a couple of pounds back on, it seems. My diet hasn’t been tight and I haven’t been as active either, so with Flo due soon, that’s bound to happen. Hmph.

Superset: Dips/T-Bar Rows:

10/20kg x 10
2 x 8/25kg x 8

I didn’t do as well on the rows this time. Guess I am tired. The dips were a bit of a struggle but I made sure to get the same reps as last time, even if it felt harder (due to extra weight no doubt).

Close Grip Pulldowns:

50kg x 10
55kg x 8

Yeah these weren’t so awesome either. And for some reason, doing these makes me want to pee. I didn’t, though!

Straight Arm Pulldowns:

20kg x 12
25kg x 10

Same as before. No progress really, but wanted to get 'em in.

Superset: Two-handed single DB overhead extension/Supinating DB curls

20kg x 10/10kg x 10
22kg x 8/12kg x 8

Progress on the overheads at least - I went up a dumbell today. Happy with that.

After that I did some gymnastics stuff - handstands, lot of cartwheels, forward and backward rolls. Then tried to do a handstand forward roll again and bodyslammed myself. Ugh, that really hurt! Didn’t want to try it again after that. I need a crash mat. I guess I just don’t have enough body control to do these properly yet.
Did some headstands and stretching and went home. Workout took nearly 2 hours.

Ah oh no, not your back too & little brat germs. Can’t you just hose them down before they come to your class? And damn that can of tuna, this all sounds exactly like what happens to me now & then, crazy random SHIT.

You put in two hours feeling wonky… and pushed through less than stellar sets.
SAV.

This made me laugh. No PW in there, though. http://theoatmeal.com/comics/gym
