On this occassion it’s because I haven’t squatted for a while so DOMS were inevitable (and yes, legs are quite sore today). I like circuits because I get a good, intense workout and it hits my whole body. When I train in the gym, I go heavy but I rarely hit that kind of intensity and I think it does me some good. Plus, hot guys.
i think the knee is in its most disadvantaged position when one his (rather than breaks) parallel - so that is probably the hardest place to get fired up for the anderson squats… but i just made that up, and i don’t know…
congrats on your squats! i’m trying to come to peace with the idea that one really can make productive gains on them working around 75% and working higher than that too frequently will only fuck you up. or me, anyway… i think part of my back injury might be about my practicing my back squats when my coach wasn’t around (so under-recovering from them), basically. you really have made good gains lately on your squats!
congrats on the netball win!
Circuit class was Hard with a capital H. As in so hard I felt pretty sick at times. But it was a damned good workout. Any other day I might have been tempted to go running after as we’re having an unseasonably warm autumn (the temperature is still in double digits thanks to warm winds blowing in from Southern Europe) but I just had nothing left in the bag. Favourite instructor is back so there was a lot of fun stuff involving ViPRs, kettlebells and boxes. Lot of press-up-related exercises too. My arms and shoulders are fried.
Still, that and a hot bath has helped my squat-induced DOMS so, glad I went (even if cute guy wasn’t there. But some other eye candy was there - just a bit too young for me is all).
Alexus - yeah, my back bitches when I start squatting a lot, especially after a break. Part of the reason I didn’t push it yesterday. I’ve never had it so bad I couldn’t do anything but it’s certainly not something I want, that’s for certain.
Glad you had fun with circuit class. I wanted to really sweat yesterday, but I think I really need to use my lower body in oly to sweat. Stupid knee is still at me. Sounds like you got a workout for both of us though. But I did lots of presses & jerks, so my arms probably feel like yours too. LOVE hot baths!!!
Now let’s dial in our diets until xmas. I have to anyway because I have to watch my money, so only good quality foods within my budget.
I’m in the same boat. Money is tight. Very tight. Unlike my waistline right now. That must be remedied!
I woke up today with the intention of either running or hitting the gym but I can’t move well enough to do either. Between the squatting and the circuits, my legs (mostly inner thighs - which are the first things to get sore when I haven’t run in a while) are hurting a lot. Shoulders are trashed too. So I stayed home. Have done a few assisted pull-ups but ran out of juice on those too. Flo showed up yesterday and that bitch always lowers endorphin levels on top of everything else.
I finally got a letter regarding my appointment with the podiatric surgeon. The appointment is on the 18th of…APRIL. Fuck! I’ve only been injured since the end of June, for fuck’s sake. April? Jesus Christ.
April? Fuck
So, I need to start being more earnest (to steal from Maschy). Got it.
Yesterday I was all “I’m tired, my legs hurt, my shoulders hurt, wah!” but today I was all “I’m gunna make you my bitch, motherfucker.” So I did deadlifts. Haven’t done them in a while, so was prepared for them to be crap. But, not so much, actually.
Deadlifts - more or less sumo stance
30kg x 10 (there was a bar with 30kg on it in the middle of the floor so I used it)
50kg x 10
60kg x 5
70kg x 5
80kg x 3
90kg x 1 (concentrated on keeping everything tight and managed to keep my form, pretty much. Went up easy).
100kg x 1 (form not quite so hot - my t-spine resembles a banana but lumbar stayed tight)
105kg x 1 (Lot of roundbacking. Went up slow. Still, this is the most I’ve lifted in quite a while and it felt as though I had more in the tank so I’m pretty happy with it).
I didn’t expect to lift more than 90kg today so it’s a win as far as I’m concerned, especially after my recent shit-ness.
Millies
Bar x 10
25kg x 10
30kg x 8 (pushed hard to get that last rep out)
32.5kg x 5 (I could have gone for another rep but I wanted to keep something in the tank)
35kg x 3 (ditto)
37.5kg x 1
40kg x 1 (equal PB, so dead chuffed. Still, it went up slowly enough that I knew I was going to be able to do more today).
After that triumph I went to do some dips. Did 4 and realised my left shoulder wasn’t happy, so I stopped there and moved on to something else.
Superset
Close grip pulldowns: 40kg x 10, 50kg x 10, 55kg x 6 (I was expecting 8 but I failed hard)
Push-ups: 10, 10, 10
Straight Arm Pulldowns
2 x 20kg x 10
Did some handstands after that but at that point I’d been in the gym close to two hours and I needed to eat. So that’s that.
Mmm, nice deadlifts there Calsies. I wanna work on mine again, but they are not in my program(s).
nice deadlifts after that DOMS inducing circuit class.
105 on deadlifts and 55 on squats?! I know you have issues with squats but there really shouldn’t be more that 10-15% difference.
On another note, I just drove back from SW London. Almost expected to run over you at the commons…

Sure, if I was a powerlifter. I’m not. I’m a 44 year old woman who worked a desk job for years, has restricted mobility and has only started making an effort to squat properly recently. Most of my squat training has been about building movement patterns rather than power training. (Although I have added weight - PR is 65kg. Bear in mind this last session was a comeback following illness so I didn’t push it). So yes, I know my squat is shit, and I don’t need anyone else to point that out to me, especially when I’ve been working hard to address this particular weakness. Thanks.

Such a great attitude for DLing. I love it! Glad you’re feeling better. Sorry your appt with the podiatrist is so delayed…I hate to see you miss out on the spring running season.
Look at those deadlifts and MPs! And squats! You are roaring back from illness and such. Very nicely done.
We’ve been having a warm fall as well. Today I ran in shorts! And its almost December…crazy.
blah to the public health system
i really really hope that the wait is worth it for you and you get to see someone wonderful.
congrats on the military! deadlift, too! did i miss the 65kg squat? your numbers are really coming up!
hope your report writing is done. i’m not quite sure what to do about leaving something in the tank and going all-out, too. i guess it partly depends on what your priority is. but then something to factor in is how you can make good progress working at sub-maximal weights. it is all so confusing to me… i certainly haven’t found that balance yet.

Sorry, didn’t intend to sound snide…
I was thinking of you while I’m buying my cheap tins of fish for my lunches the rest of Dec, possibly Jan. I have not been doing absolutely great like I said I would. But slowly getting rid of the bad stuff in the house.
I feel ya on the appt. I have one to check out my er, female parts with a camera. Only the appointment to see if I need the actual appointment is not until July 2012, blah! I could go some where for private, but you know every thing costs money.
Oh jeez, I’d rather have my foot checked out than my lady parts. Good luck with that.
Alexus - it’s not rocket science, really. If I am going for heavy singles I stop short of failure on the sets leading up to that. It’s similar to the theory behind 5-3-1 - you might be able to get 10 or even 20 reps on the first set but you stop at 5 because you don’t want to blow your load prematurely. You need your strength for your final set.

I had to get a colposcopy once, and let me tell ya, that fucking blew chunks! Literally. lulz?
Anyways…
Sucks you have to wait until April - like Nadia said, with running season and all right around the corner…but better late than never!
Nice Dling, btw! What a pleasant little surprise!
And strong MPs. Good stuff!
