Cal's Big Log 3D - Attack of the Giant Arse

Gym today. No cardio. Abs still sore but not quite so bad, so decided not to deadlift but to do everything else.

Warm up:

20 lateral raises
20 front raises
20 dumbell presses
20 curls
20 hammer curls
20 bent over raises

Military Press:

Bar x 10
25kg x 10
30kg x 8
5 x 32.5kg x 5

I didn’t feel up to going heavy so went with the old 5x5 instead. Front of the right shoulder is cranky and I can feel that brachialis again. I guess the circuits actually do put a lot of stress on the old bod.

Superset:

Rear Delt Flyes: 6kg x 15, 8kg x 12
Lateral Raises: 6kg x 15, 8kg x 12

Band-Assisted Pull-ups:

7, 5, 5, 5, 4

One rep short of the 8 I got the other day at home but I blame the sore abs for that.

Dips:

12, 8

Just did the two sets. Shoulder wasn’t feeling great.

Superset:

Overhead Tricep Extension: 18kg x 12, 20kg x 10
Hammer Curls: 8kg x 12, 10kg x 10

Superset:

Rope Pushdown: 10kg x 15, 12.5kg x 12
DB Curls: 8kg x 15, 10kg x 12

And that was it, pretty much.

damn that shoulder…hope it feels better after resting it.

That’s shoulder’s been a problem for 20 years. It’s like a nagging wife. Most of the time I can tune it out but on the days it nags loudly I have to say “yes dear, whatever you say, dear.”

The exact reason why I don’t nag at my husband. Either ineffective or I annoy myself.

Good job working around the bitchy body part.

Not done anything since Tuesday - I just didn’t feel like spin on Wednesday at all. Tired and starving hungry. I’m a morning person - that’s when I have my energy - and trying to drag my arse to the gym in the evening feels like a chore.

I am having to work Monday this coming week, but it’s a good thing (sort of!) A teacher at school got suspended (no details yet - it’s all a mystery at this point because she’s lovely) so I am taking her class on a pre-arranged trip to Hampton Court. It’ll be a nice day out plus I get paid an extra day, which helps.

I’m not too fussed about missing a day’s training because it comes the day after that brutal circuit class so I’ll be sore anyway.

I’ve got the podiatrist on Tuesday, too. I’m a bit concerned because they mainly see people for gait analysis and orthotic prescription. I don’t want fucking orthotics - I want this lump seen to! And I will tell them that.

Yay for extra $$!

Good luck with the podiatrist, fingers crossed they can get that lump sorted out without jumping to any orthotic conclusions.

I imagine I will be referred for a scan of some sort. Cue more waiting around for yet another appointment.

Heh, DO I understand that!!

So anyway, after a shit night’s sleep (two nights in a row I’ve woken up just after 4am and haven’t been able to get back to sleep - I think the business with the teacher being suspended has unsettled me rather) I got to the gym. Did squats but my head wasn’t really in the game.

Warm-up:

20 hypers
20 reverse hypers
20 clams
20 single leg thrusters
10 step overs (bar on pin 8)
10 step overs (bar on pin 10)

Squats:

Bar x 20
30kg x 20
40kg x 15
45kg x 12
50kg x 10
55kg x 7 (+1)
57.5kg x 5 (+1 - did pause a bit before reps 4 and 5, mind you)
60kg x 3
62.5kg … didn’t bail but I cut it high
65kg … same - cut it high

As I said, head wasn’t right. I rushed the last two sets in order to get to spin class rather than preparing mentally properly. Also, last week I was well rested and had a positive mindset. Plus, I lifted on a Sunday which meant I had a day of carbs prior. This morning I felt tired and of course, Wednesday through Friday are low carb days. I think I’ll make a point of squatting on Sundays in future.

On a positive note, I got a rep more on some of the other heavier sets, plus at 60kg I put the big plates on (I was using two 10kg plates a side last week) and it didn’t bother me so much, psychologically. I was alone in the weight room for the last two sets - I think that makes a difference too. I seem to be happier when other people are lifting (so long as they are not talking loudly).

Did the spin class - it wasn’t my favourite instructor and I was a bit bored, honestly. Didn’t enjoy it much but I got through it.

I’m going to take it easy for the rest of the day. Get some groceries, cook something wholesome and settle down in front of the shows I recorded. My chocolate tasting club selection also arrived so I shall be consuming a few dirty carbs, heh.

Enjoy your day!

Circuit training this morning. Lots of stations that involve jumping. I hate jumping! It goes against all my natural instincts to jump with both feet at the same time.

I suck at spiderman push-ups, by the way. That’s something I can work on.

Some eye candy though. One fellow in particular tickles my fancy, so that’s a nice incentive to keep going, eh?

Just had a protein shake and a bath and getting ready to catch up with Boardwalk Empire.

So we have drilling with strap ons, dirty carbs…love it!

You have my utmost respect for a) hitting the gym when you just don’t want to b) working out at home when you can’t bare the gym. You are a far better woman than I! nice job.

Also loving the circuits and the class! That’s the kind of intensity I miss. Sigh.

Congrats on those squat PRs! And the lost inches! Doing great in here, Cal. Well done! Enjoy that yummy chocolate and TV time!

Hmm, I seem to have some problems jumping myself too, my right foot tends to do a wander by the time I land. Let me know when you learn the trick of it.

Sounds like things are moving along for you.

Best of luck with that foot appointment tomorrow. Make them help you! This no running business is getting quite old.

fuck yeah!!! congrats on 2 squat PRs!!!

Warning: long post ahead.

No training yesterday as I was covering for the absent teacher by taking her class to Hampton Court for an educational visit. It was a lovely day and I like Hampton Court so it was pretty sweet for an extra day’s pay.

Today I had the task of fitting in a workout before I attended the podiatry appointment (if I’d left it until after, I just wouldn’t have gone. My willpower degrades throughout the day). I didn’t really get much done.

Usual shoulder warm-up.

Military Press:

Bar x 10
25kg x 10
30kg x 8
32.5kg x 6 (I didn’t think I had a 7th in me)
35kg x 5 (+1)
37.5kg x 2 (+1 !!!)
40kg x 1 (veeerrry slow. I missed this last time although it is my PR for about a year now)
42.5kg - FAIL

I’m not too pissed off about missing 42.5kg (about 93lbs I think) because the 40 went up so slowly but hey, I would like to set a new PR before too long. It’s odd to me that I can add reps at the heavier weights but not at the lighter weights - I seem to fatigue quickly on these.

Dips:

12, 9, 9

Was going to superset chins and decline push-ups but forgot my rubber band. I tried chinning without and only got two res (unlike last week when I got several sets of 3) so either I’ve got a pound or two more on me or else it’s the fact I’m doing this after a weekend’s worth of carbs, whereas previously I did them after three low-carb days.

Decline push-ups were not good either - could feel that left bicep tendon again. It doesn’t hurt but feels like it would if I persisted. I’m wise enough by now to know when to back off.

Superset:

Overhead Dumbell Extension: 18kg x 12, 20kg x 10, 22kg x 8 (new weight)
Seated DB curls (strict!): 6kg x 12, 8kg x 10, 10kg x 8

Really that was all I had time for.

I set off to the podiatrist which was a 2.3 mile walk according to mapmyrun.com - fortunately it is a nice day and the walk involved the length of Wandsworth Common so it was very pleasant.

So, my assessment. I was seen by a kindly-seeming older gentleman called Brian, who had a good look at my feet, played around with how the bones worked, watched me walk and eventually concluded that the right foot had a problem but that I didn’t need orthotics (I did mention the last orthotic I had just gave me a big blister and didn’t do much else and also that currently, shoes with more arch support irritate my foot more than flat shoes). He is referring me to an orthopedic surgeon to find out more about the lump but this could take a long time, once more. Nothing I didn’t expect. But essentially that’s how I wanted this appointment to go - I was really hoping I wasn’t going to see some deadpan young podiatrist who thought orthotics were the cure for every ill.

Walked back again. Decided to job a bit once I got to Wandsworth Common to save time (Vibrams and acorns = not good!). Amusingly I passed three female joggers - me in my coat and backpack with my dodgy foot. I run slowly so Christ knows what speed they were going.

So that’s that. Back to school tomorrow for two days. Training day on Friday (I get to learn to use an Epipen) then half term holiday for two weeks (yay!). Apart from the bloody swimming gala on Thursday 3rd November. Anyway…

Laters, ladies.

I just love that you walked all that way to and from the podiatrist! I’m glad that the dpm at least took the time to look at things and didn’t just chuck you into some ‘quick fix’ that messes things up in the long run.

Good job knowing the limits of your body with the push ups. That’s such a hard line to find.

when is the ortho appt??

As I said in my last post, it could take a long time. I have to wait for them to contact me.

nice pressing Cal, glad you got what you needed out of that appointment.
