Cal's Big Log 3D - Attack of the Giant Arse

Cal: I’m sure thatnew 1 rep max MP pr will come soon. Nice training. Glad your doc didn’t suck, but set you on the path to seeing a surgeon…and hopefully soon.

As for the MPs, here is where fractional plates RULE. Had you added just a kg, I’ll bet that would have gone up.

If your foot felt OK after that slow run, then fabulous! It would be great if you could get back to it whilst waiting for the docs to get around to you. Did the foot doc have any wisdom on that question?

Yeah I would like some fractional plates but right now I don’t have the spare cash. The smallest at my gym are 1.25kg (about 2.5lbs) so that’s a 2.5kg jump per left. No big deal for deadlift or squat but not so great for the smaller lifts. Anyway…

Brian the podiatrist seemed to think the foot was getting better but my own view is take it slowly and don’t take the piss. We’ll see how it goes I guess.

Slowly does it, you’ll be running away from the eye candy in the gym pretty soon ;-p

Those epi pens scare me, I was shown one during my training too.

So, no training for three days, but now it’s half term. I must confess I failed with the low carb for three days - had trail mix several times, and chocolate. I blame it on PMS and the cold weather.

Anyway, no weights today because I did circuits (this was the not so fun class…although I quite it enjoyed it this time). The Saturday class starts with a challenge where you try to complete 50 reps each of four exercises. Today was squats (free), lunges, push-ups and burpees. I broke it down into sets of ten. I got 30 done of the squats and burpees, 28 lunges and 20 push-ups (because I was doing those last and ran out of time. I felt pretty winded.

Then it was three weight exercises for 1 minute each, which you rotate through twice (push-ups again, deadlifts and squats), two boxing exercises with partner for 90 seconds each (you take turns holding the pads and whatnot), then three more weight exercises (millies, ViPR lunges and ViPR thread the needle) and another two boxing exercises. It was hard and even with the lighter weights, going for one minute is tough. I felt I’d had a good enough workout not to bother with the gym again after. Oh and after that, he made us do some nasty ab work.

I did go to the gym and do some gymnastics for a bit - my handstand is getting a bit better (I am able to stop short of hitting the wall about 50% of the time now, but can’t hold it for more than a couple of seconds) and I felt brave enough to give cartwheels another try. Still messy but not as horrible as I’d feared. Headstands and forward rolls. I need to work my backward roll but I always end up tweaking my levator and wasn’t in the mood for a sore neck today.

After that it was grocery shopping which is a weight workout in itself, since I have to lug it all back up the hill to my flat after. No car.

I’m trying to include a lot more cruciferous veg now. I love broccoli, so no problem there, but I’ve also rediscovered a love for raw cauliflower. I can eat that stuff like candy. That and carrots.

Planning on doing circuits tomorrow and maybe squats first if I wake up in time.

raw veggies are rough on the thyroid.

Don’t slack on your plan Miss Cal!!

It’s that time of year when I start feeling a little flat myself - I started increasing my D this week.

So, no squats this morning but I did make the circuit class. Which was hard, but hey, that’s why I go. However, there were quite a few jumping stations and bugger me but I can’t jump. I have trouble jumping onto a step plus three risers with both feet together. That’s a challenge. Everyone else was doing five risers. Bleh. At least I rock the push-ups and kettlebell work. And the cleans.

After that I did a bit of handstand work (I was better yesterday) but the lovely weather - blue skies, very mild, nice breeze - had me deciding to go for a run. Three miles, in my Vibrams. First proper outdoor run in them. Food twinged a couple of times and the old side of the bum ache came back. Worst thing was the right achilles tendon. That tendon’s been cranky for 20+ years so I didn’t pay it much mind - I guess that the long lay off and the different shoes annoyed it. Anyway, such a gorgeous day, I couldn’t regret it. It would have been a crime not to go out.

I feel I ought to do some heavy stuff but right now I don’t feel that inspired by it - I’m finding the circuits and other stuff more fun. But I will persevere with the squats.

Training should be FUN! (at least to me)

Trust me I’m not finding much inspiration in the heavy stuff right now. You do what you gotta do.

Cal: Glad you got out for a run. Mixing up the training is always good, and those circuit workouts sound tough!

Oh god I am so pissed off. I hand washed my Vibrams this afternoon (I don’t have a washing machine) and, being a complete fuckwit, I decided to dry them in the oven since I’d baked a potato in there for lunch and it was still warm. A bit too warm - something must have been touching one of the straps because it burned clean through. I tried cutting the burned portion off and sewing them back together but the strap is some sort of rubber and I can’t get the needle through. Fuck fuck fuck! I’m going to have to use parcel tape or something. Fuck. What an idiot.

That is so great that you went on a lovely run! I haven’t yet been brave enough to run in my Vibrams…if the Nike Frees are working for me, I’m sticking with that.

Bummer on the Vibram debacle. The best way to dry those things is place them in front of a fan set on low. No ovens! Try duct tape. It fixes everything.

Ah sorry about the V’s, I know how much you like being in them.

I’ve just bought some more on EBay. US seller - even with postage they’re still about 40 quid cheaper than in the UK. Let’s hope they arrive OK.

Do you get charged extra VAT if you order them from the US?

I’ve no idea. It’s just the US price plus the postage. In any case, it’ll be nice to have another pair. I didn’t need the extra expense but hey, these things happen.

As for today, no training but I was a good girl and got my foam rolling in (I followed some of those DeFranco moves, and yeah, that bit just behind my armpit is tender. Never thought to foam roll there before. My VMO are tight as hell too. Ow.) as well as some chores I’d been putting off.

I am off up north in three days to do some coastering with my friends, and will probably eat quite a few of my mate Colin’s awesome cupcakes. At least he’s bought some gluten free flour now. I want to get at least two good training days in before I go and will try to get to the 6.30am circuit class on the Thursday before I leave. If I wake up. It’s still pitch black at that time over here so waking up is getting harder. But the clocks change at the weekend (boo to the dark evenings though).

What makes Colin’s cupcakes awesome? I ask because I am planning on baking my first cupcakes ever for a Halloween party I’m throwing this weekend. Dark chocolate cupcakes with dark chocolate frosting and orange sugar pumpkin faces on each one.

Possibly because I don’t normally eat cake, so they’re a real treat. But he does a lot of experimental flavours like lemon and cardamom and stuff like that. Last time he did chocolate he used the wrong nozzle and the frosting looked like cartoon dog poop, so he put some toy flies on there for a laugh. They still got eaten.

sorry to hear about your vibram straps… maybe you could cut the straps off and you will have turned them into a pair of the classic moccasins??
