Hey T-men,
I have recently gotten a slam-man free standing punching dummy. The thing is that I would like to develop some punching skill/power and use it for cardio, but I know jack about this. Is there a certain way to go about this or should I just wail on this thing for as long as possible. Any advice or written sources of info on this subject would be much appreciated.
thanx
Is that the electronic dummy that lights up and is covered in blue foam? If so, I would return it and spend the money on a boxing club membership, or at least a heavy bag. You’ll probably save money and you’ll get a better workout. Hope this helps, and good luck!
I got a slam man a couple of years ago, and it has helped my punching form quite a bit. Also, I used to not know how to properly place my hip torque into a jab or any type of power punch, but praticing on the slam man made it easy to discover how to distribute that energy, especially when you get to knock it down from a quick jab (kind of like Bruce Lee’s 1 inch punch) without cheating. The settings after mode 2 make it difficult for me to keep my guard up for more than 10mins. Tons and tons of fun.
Is it any good? I thought it looked like fun, but figured it’d probably not stand up to a serious thumping.
I second the motion to get some hands-on instruction, though. It’s good to work with someone one-on-one so that they can get your form squared away.
What you do with the dummy depends on your goals. If your goal is a good cardio workout then just beat the shit out of it and keep your feet moving.
If you really want to learn how to fight then buying the dummy won’t do anything for you.
Yeah, one on one instruction will always be better than just working with a slam man, especially since it just stands there. But like any other training device, slam man is more of a supplement to core training than a main staple. Just like a study guide is to a specific, very specialized subject, so is using on of those devices to the aspect of coordination. Personally, I think it is only worth paying less than 50$, not the prices they offer now.
I’ve got a Slam Man. The problem is my neighbors in my apartment building bitched and moaned about the noise so i can’t use it anymore. If anyone thinks its a crappy, useless piece of plastic that’s going to break, trust me, it ain’t. Its built solid. And with 300 lbs of sand in the base, it can take quite a beating. I’ve done Muy Thai boxing, and, while it would never replace a full gym with a Thai bag and regular bags, it does have one serious advantage over bags, a “face” to aim for.
Have you ever used a Body Opponent Bag (BOB)? It has a pretty realistic rubber human torso that is adjustable for height. It responds to kicks and punches differently than a person, but it’s a nice change up from regular bag work. Here’s a picture (if the mod lets it through)http://store2.yimg.com/I/titleboxing_1648_3326864
Hey! I just realized that BOB looks kind of like Cy Willson! No wonder when I saw his picture in a back issue I smacked the computer. It all makes sense now! And Cy, if you read this, I hope you have a sense of humor (for my sake).
Thanx guys,
I got the thing for free and want to know how to use it without having to pay for instruction.
if you want to improve your “skill/power” get rid of that piece of sh$t!!! my mom had one and I tried it ONCE, let me just say if you can’t break that thing you had better not EVER get in a real fight.
