I’m currently paying 15 bucks every few weeks for someone to buzz my head. I’m thinking I could save a grand or two a year if I do it myself. I’m sure there’s some 80’s metal hair running around in here, but I’d guess there are also some people who keep their hair trimmed short. Anyone have any experience buzzing their own hair? Worth it? Did it look horrible the first few times you did it? Are there any specific tips you’ve got? I humbly submit myself to your collective wisdom.
I did it for a couple of years. The first couple of times I had a buddy or a chick do it, but after that I went solo. With that, the first few times I went solo I’d always miss a spot [or two], usually behind/around the ears. I kept it tight with a zero with the guard up, so I’d shave between once and twice a week. Stopped 'cause I just felt like having hair again, but I fucking loved having a shaved head.
Been buzzing my own hair since I was about 16. I’m 20 now, so i’ve been doing it for a while lol. It saves you a ton of money, especially since I like to keep my shit short a majority of the time, and I usually give myself a haircut every 2-3 weeks.
First tip: Get quality clippers. I’ve been using Wahl clippers, as do most barbers. They’re a great brand, I would go with them.
Whenever you cut your hair, start with the highest setting first. For example, if you want a 5 on top and a 3 on the sides, first do your whole head using the 5 guard, and then do the sides using the 3 guard. This will eliminate getting a weird line in your hair. In addition, for the smoothest possible look, and to avoid missing spots, go over your head several times using the 5 guard, especially the back, which is the easiest to miss. I usually go over everything 2-3 times.
Now, for the back. This will be the hardest part, especially creating the “line” between your hair and your neck. I do it myself, and can do it perfectly, but like I said, it will probably take several months of practice before you can do the same. You might want someone to help you the first few times you do it.
The only thing I can advise is getting a small handheld mirror, and using it to see the back of your neck. I use the clippers at no guard, and slowly and CAREFULLY trim off the excess hair to form that neat looking line. Good luck.
$15 for a haircut? Does that come with a happy ending?
I’m usually a 2/1 fade, but that’s way too complicated to do myself. Gonna go for the even 1 or 2 all the way around, I think. Maybe when I’m more comfortable I’ll try to do a fade. Thanks for the tips, guys. I’ll raise a glass with all that saved loot. Cheers!

I live in a kinda expensive area. When I was in Manhattan it was like 30 bucks. Fucking awful.
Just go over your head like fifty times over, seriously. It shouldn’t take too long, but don’t EVER do it in a rush. You will miss spots and look like a jackass.
I’ll still ask for a second glance from someone if they’re around, but you’ll tend to start realizing the same spots that you consistently miss, and just adjust from there.

This. Like I said, I generally missed behind/around the ears. A few times of lookin’ like a goober fixed that. I also second the quality clippers remark. Still use the same clippers I’ve had for close to 5 years now. I take 'em apart and clean 'em every now and then, but they still work great.
I shaved my head once about 15 years ago and may need to do it again if I want to be Bane for Halloween.

No, I’m being Bane!
As per the actual topic, it gets easier with time. I’ve been doing it solo for what seems like forever now and I still miss bits and pieces from time to time. It makes life so much easier IMO
I’ll bet there are lots of guys over 200lbs with the shaved head/goatee look that will be Bane this year.
We all have to get our heads together to figure out how to make that mask.

Good idea.
I shave my head with a #1 or with just the clippers, depending on how I feel. I have done so for years. Practice makes perfect. It saves a LOT of money - I figure I’ve saved over $3000 in haircuts just in the last ten years. That shit adds up!

Same here, I watched a girl do my hair when I was in my early 20’s and I thought shit I can do this. Almost 20 years later still cutting my hair once a week with the Wahl clippers I bought from Wal Mart. I even do a flat top, fade etc. You fuck up all you do is buzz it with a 1 guard and the let grow back.
