Buying A New Car...But Which One??

No possibility this smells like tuna.

When you guys go test drive a car, how do you actually go about doing it?

Personally, I always run a car through a few basic handling tests. Some variant of straight-line acceleration from a stop, straight-line deceleration, and a skidpad test (usually at a vacant roundabout). For the last, I’ll just slowly increase the speed, going round and round until the car loses traction and seeing how it fails. The most disappointing one was a Lexus IS 350 that seemed like a great car up until that point… but it failed so unpredictably, I couldn’t trust it.

And then just take it on the highway and on some bumpier roads to check out comfort and noise.

That’s usually after I’ve done some research and sat in the car and played with things a bit.

I scream out of the parking lot, like I am being chased by cops.

Pull on the highway and go from slow to fast to slow. And slalom the fuck out of cars all on the road. Then come off the highway as fast as possible and lock it the fuck up at the red light.

dear god i love the R, although not exactly what the OP is looking for

Fahrvergnugen!!! (said loudly with anger in a German accent)

once you settle on the top 2 or 3 rent the damn thing for a weekend and drive the shit out of it. rental cars tell you more as they’ve got wear and abuse on them.
spend hrs in the seat and see how it feels. what starts out great might be killing your back or ass after a 150 mi ride or being stuck in traffic for an hr. does that ac really cool the car when stuck in traffic?
how does it feel when you hit that big ass pothole at 45 mph and the steering wheel tries to jerk away?

how loud is the wind noise at hwy speed. how loud is that crotch rocket that’s blipping the throttle next to you at the stoplight? how loud are the squeaks and rattles inside the car?
how fast will it pass that semi and the 2 cars you didn’t see in front of it?
how do the seats and interior look? are the seams showing wear or pulling? is anything crooked or cracked?
how’s the glare on the dash? is everything within comfortable reach and easy to use?

if you’ve got a spot hose down the road and slam on the breaks at about 50 mph. then do it on a dry road.
ask a mechanic, a real mechanic, what he thinks. in the 90’s I almost bought a new 6 cyl Mitsubishi but a mech at the dealership told me they were having top end issues so I didn’t but someone I know did. new warrenty-5 yrs OR 6ok mi. started smoking and had to do valve job at @3 1/2 yrs and 70k mi.
