Bulldog and Bullpup Log Part 2

Aint that the truth. Some of these guys are trying to relive their youth through their kids. My sons about to turn 12 and he’s big for his age 5’6 155 lbs. At what age did you start your boys on a lifting program if you have? I was thinking about a 3 day per week total body workout, keeping the reps at 10 plus and focusing on deadlifts, squats, bench and military press. Any ideas? [/quote]

I’ve learned to deal with the parent whom think that there kid is going to be a first round draft pick in the NFL. Honestly the types that really gets under my skin are the guys that are coaching. The ones who thinks that coaching is a sport in itself. They tend to forget that its about the kids and not them.

Regarding weight training and my oldest… I serious didnt start working with my oldest just shy of his 13 th. Mama wouldn’t let me do it sooner because what she was told by a Pediatrician. I respected my wife wishes until the oldest started sprouting hair down south. I basically started him using Rippetoe’s Starting Strength. Since it does use the basic compound movements. I’m not a big fan of using high reps for teaching form. I think that 5 rep range is a good range to teach form. With my son I focused more on form then weight. I wouldn’t let him move up in weight until I felt that he had mastered the weight he was using with form that I felt was acceptable.

Accumulation phase 10’s wave

11/5/11

Warm up:

MPresses: bar x 10
95 x 5

      135 x 10,10,10,10,12

Bent over flys: 3 x 8 x 30

EZ bar arm curls : 3 x 10 X SW

I had to do a quickie. Wife at the last minute decided we where going to the Football Sectional Championship. It really pisses me off when I have to change things on the fly.

Our head coach had some of that. Overall he was good with the kids positive and said the right things with conviction. But during games he was a one man show didnt want any input and liked trick plays that we hadnt mastered. Prob cost us a game.

Thanks for the lifting advice. Fortunately I’m not getting wife resistance.

You make that sound like a bad thing.

Fun that a number of us have sons the same age. Mine just turned 13 last week and is 5’9" and 120 lb. He lifts a bit, but nothing consistently yet.

And yes I have that Megadeath song on my Ipod

He sounds fairly big for his age. Did you say he’s active in sports? Do you encourage his lifting?

Nothing wrong with a quickie of a certain kind…Just not in the regards of training

My boy is the munchkin of the group.

He’s tall. Extremely lean. Plays hockey. And is hugely active. All the time.

Kids are the best, they make you keep things in proper perspective.

Man, miss a few days and before you know it someone’s completely changed their training program…

The 10’s week is a lot of suck but I do think that it sets you up nicely for the 8s. I think that you’ll like JM because it’s pretty easy on your joints. I haven’t really added the conditioning work as I’m still getting used to all of the volume but do plan on it.

Mentally I wanted a break from the heavy stuff for awhile. Along with rebuilding my base. The 10’s wave really does suck. In a very big way.The high volume is really kicking my ass right now.

I’d be really interested in seeing how you plan on working in the heavy work with this. That is if you indeed plan on it. I would love to rotate this with heavy singles or triples but just don’t know how that would look yet or if that is even really necessary.

I agree about the mental break from really heavy work. Hang in there and the 10’s will be done before you know it.

I’m following the % and rep and set scheme by the letter. So I wont see any triples for a few months.

Accumulation phase, 10’s wave

11/7/11

Warm up: Pvc pipe roll
Band GM’s/standing ab crunches supersetted 3 x 10
Light stretching

Deadlift: 135 x 5 ( all sets done without belt)
225 x 1

275 x 10,10,10,10,15......Actually had reps left in the tank on the last set.But damn my lower back was cooking

SSBar parallel box squat: 3 x 5 x 225…I’m using this as a supplemental, I went light on these because the back was fried

Bent rows: (strict) 175 x 5, 195 x 5, 225 x 10

Shrugs : 3 x 15 x 315

Spread eagle sit ups: 2 x 8 x 10

YIPPY!!! Survived the Accumulation phase !!! Unto the next phase of the 10’s wave.

Damn, 15 rep deads. You should have done the Meathead Challenge.

I figured that you would be. I was really thinking more along the lines of rotating this program along with heavier training. But, I suppose that’s what the 3 wave is for. I’m almost done with the 8s and I think I’ll run this program back to back. I do like that it provides variety and realize that’s important to me.

I’m looking forward to seeing how you like this.

Must have missed the program change, what program is it?

Yeah thats what the 3 's wave is for. I’m not going to modify anything . Since I want to evaluate the quality of the program
