Bulking and Cutting for Football?

Currently i plan on bulking for 4 weeks and cut for 2 weeks, going low carb for those 2 weeks. i plan on repeating this til beginning of season. any thoughts on a more effective plan? is there a better way to cut than low-carb?

my goal is to gain 10-12lbs and still be lean enough to play rb/pr/kr. i feel this plan would limit my body fat% from getting to high. i read that in longer bulk cycles u gain more fat(i know not as much as i think), and its more of a task to cut. any info or guidance would guys thanks.

oh also i train with the conjugate/Defranco template and it changes as the off-season progresses to season.

You’ll just be spinning your wheels.

let’s say you gain 4 lbs of lean mass in 4 weeks, you’ll drop nearly all of by going low carb for 2 weeks, only to keep repeating.

What are your stats? HS or college?

You’ll definitely be spinning your wheels, mostly because that is such a small time frame that you can’t really gain any fat free mass in that amount of time, nor can you really cut that much fat in that amount of time.

Besides, if you’re in a sport, you should be focusing more on performance really, unless you are seriously underweight for your position man.

It depends on what level you’re playing on (high school or college) and what your numbers are at the moment (ht, wt, 40 time, etc.)

When I was in high school, I thought I needed to have the ht and wt numbers of the college and pro guys to be any good, and although I was pretty successful, I could have done a lot more if I focused more on speed and skill work than just putting up a big bench press and weighing over 200 lbs.

My advice would be to eat a high calorie, clean diet, don’t worry about cutting carbs or any of that, and train your ass off in ways that will help you on the field. I’d place an emphasis on speed/agility first and foremost, and maybe plan on a slow, clean bulk (not a lot or any fat ideally) before leaning up and getting in the best shape possible when camp/two-a-days roll around.

…just my 2 cents…

jr college
5’10"
fluctuate between 197 and 200lbs
40time:4.5 (could be in high 4.4’s now)
bench 1rm: 305
225 bech test: 16reps
deadlift: 410
box squat: 495
i totally get what you guys are saying, the same thoughts went through my mind. i just want to go into season lean not sure how to approach that(as a football player). ive gone through articles about bulking on this site, but mostly applys to bodybuilding. now i know i need to gain weight if im going to transfer to a 4 year school, im apprehensive because im afraid of losing speed/agility. and yes i know “more muscle = more speed” its more of a mental thing. im really dialed in with my training, but i need to get my nutrition in order. so do i bulk the same way as others on this site? since im running so much(due to spring ball) do i even need to worry about fat gain?

haha, wow, if your stats are true (and I’m not saying I doubt it) you’re probably already on your way to getting to play at a 4-year school somewhere (even if it’s 1-AA or D2).

I think what you should do is continue focusing on making clean gains everywhere can (weight room, field, etc.), and eat enough to recover with a calorie surplus of around 500 or so. I think going about it in this way can get you to a solid 205, even 210. Didn’t Reggie play at 205?

Anyway, as a fellow college football player, I must say I envy your speed. Good luck with your training man, hope I’m not leading you in the wrong direction.

yeah iam consistantly in the low to mid 4.5s(not that impressive to me), thats why i think i can or will soon break into high 4.4 range. any how, thanks for advice 18load i think ur probably right, im just over thinking it and should just make my gains as clean as possible
