GVT program to get more def in legs will this work or does it only work for muscle mass

Thanks Molly, Claire, and Betty (I’m taking the I hate you as a compliment). I am loving lifting with the knee wraps!

Joseph,
As far as I know, GVT is a body building program, so it’s set up to build muscle mass. The lifting that I do is oriented towards strength training for powerlifting. So I haven’t ever done GVT or anything like it.

But, what I do know is that lowering body fat and building muscle are, in combination, the key to leg definition. So GVT, with a good diet would work for good leg definition, but so would many other lifting programs in combination with a good diet. Also, when picking a lifting program for legs it’s important to take into account how big you want your legs. I have big legs naturally so I wouldn’t want to do GVT because it would make my legs even bigger than they already are. I do low reps with heavy weight, which is good for building strength not size. This helps with definition, but they don’t look pumped. If you have smaller legs and want them bigger and more defined then a bodybuilding workout like GVT is the right way to go. Lastly, I believe GVT is a really intense program, not really made for a beginner, so if you haven’t weight trained hard before, this may not be for you yet.

I hope this was useful in answering your question. Good luck in your training. If you want to know more about GVT or other bodybuilding programs, I would suggest you start a post in the bodybuilding or beginners forum. I’m sure there are people there that can tell you way more about that kind of training.

Nice work!

Oh yeah, so I forgot to post this… we have a guy at our gym who is COMPLETELY ridiculous. (big surprise, huh?) Apparently he USED to work there, but got fired for LYING and SAYING he was a physical therapist, when he ISN’T! Anyway, he always puts this little pad on the squat bar when he squats, and he gives a new meaning to the term Quarter Squats… his are like One Sixteenth Squats or something… Calling what he does “Quarter Squats” would be a COMPLIMENT…

Anyway, the other day he was doing his little Sixteenth Squats with 135, 225, then 315… the funniest thing is he GRUNTS SO LOUD the whole time! What a weirdo…

So, anyway, I tried to be slick and get a video of him squatting by pretending to take a video of Sarah acting like a fool on the Lat Pulldown… but unfortunately, I thin he caught on to what we were doing… you can see him in the PURPLE TANK TOP pacing back and forth waiting for us to finish filming before he resumes his “exercise”… Here is the video…

Watching that video was completely worth NOT seeing the 1/16th squats… cuz I’m sure every gym has a squatard, but not every gym has a benchtastic hookerface jizzing on the lat pulldown.

I actually thought she was filming something funny in the background, instead it turns out to be a video of me looking like a baffoon (as if there isn’t enough of those videos already). I believe this is the last time I dedicate my services to the Pepe paparazzi.

So three questions:

  1. How’s the mental aspect of meet day coming? Visualize

  2. How’s the depth coming? Make sure you nail your first squat and give them no questions about your depth. If you ‘prove’ in your first squat that you’re a deep squatter, you’ll get the benefit of the doubt more often than not in your “close to depth” squats.

  3. WHY THE HELL do you and Molly both walk like 5 miles out of the rack before you squat? It’s worse that Ouro’s dancing she used to do before she squatted. Energy waster!

No kidding. I almost wanted to have a smoke after watching that.

LMAO!!
you guys are NUTS!

I didn’t realize it looked like I was having sex with the lat pull down apparatus. I guess everyone/thing deserves a little love.

  4. I’ve actually been doing a lot of visualizing, or maybe it would be spacing off at work thinking about the meet. Tonight we are going through all of our openers and how we will be warming up. I think it will help me be more focused in my visualizing!

  5. Depth is great. Combining foam rolling and mobility, ART and knee wraps have seemed to take care of any depth issues I have been having.

  6. This is a good point. I guess I do it because no one has told me not to. I will work on this tonight during warming up and opening weights.

Thanks for the input! Every little bit helps at this point.

Aren’t you just a little ticked that she talked you into looking silly on video…again? she’s good. she’s very good. not to be trusted, though.

I started laughing as soon as I walked into the gym today. Saw the lat pulldown and lost it. Oh, good times.

We did all of our openers yesterday. We were there during the busiest time of day and Jim had to go to work so it ended up feeling like a cardio circuit, we started warming up on bench while we waited to squat and warmed up on deadlift while we waited to bench. It was craziness.

Openers
Squat:205
45x8
95x5
135x3
155x2
185x1 belt and wraps
205x1

Bench:165
75x8
95x5
135x3
155x2
165x1 brain crapped out and I forgot to pause at listen for press, whoops.
165x1 Long pause, I did it right this time.
It doesn’t really matter because it all went fine, but bench felt rushed and I really didn’t warmup well.

Deadlift:265
95x8 (I think it was 95, it is all kind of a blur)
135x5
165x3
185x2
225x1
265x1

I told Jim to pick my 2nd and 3rd attempt and just not tell me. I think I do better just not knowing. He is quite good at guessing what I can do and I don’t want to second guess myself.

You rocked out yesterday Sarah! I am so proud of you! =D

Good job Sarah, you’ll do great.

Great job Sarah. Strong openers. You are going to kick a$$ this weekend.

Claire

Thanks Free and Claire (not you Molly, you’re just trying to make up for trying to switch the time so I wouldn’t be able to workout with you).

Yesterday I did singles of 70 percent of my low estimated one rep max. I was feeling kind of run down so everything felt kind of heavy.

Squat: 170 or 165 belt (I forgot my log)
Bench: 125 with press and rack call
Deadlift:195

Last night I shoveled mulch and unloaded and moved river rock for a couple hours. Our backyard now has a pond for the turtle and my vegetable garden has a path. I don’t know if this was a great idea right before the competition but it had to be done. I don’t feel too sore today so I’m sure it will be fine.

Can you post pictures when the pond and the garden are done? It sounds lovely. Do you live in a rural area?

I can hardly wait to hear how you and Molly kick ass.
