Buffet Training No More

Congrats on the bench PR. It’s such a great feeling isn’t it?

So have you decided for sure if you’re doing the meet?[/quote]

Thanks! It felt awesome. I am still shocked how much small technical details go into lifting. I believe at least 15 lbs of that PR was technique changes alone.

Unless there is a huge catastrophic event between now and then, I’m definitely doing the meet. I am getting pretty pumped up about it.

Holy Sh*t Woman!!
That’s a lot of weight…or maybe the gym has magical powers when you walk through the door, teehee! :stuck_out_tongue:

Ouro, I think we need to go to Kentucky. I think the bench gravity is different there

All kidding aside, that’s an amazing PR! When is moving day? Are you still going to follow Max Strength to the end or will you move to a different type of training for meet prep?

I was talking about gains made through technique changes with a friend yesterday. A lot of what we do is mental and it is maximizing our own bodies leverages. I added a ton to my deadlift just by changing my set up a bit higher. Still, I’m pretty sure you are strong as hell but it helps to maximize what you can.

Congrats on 170! May I ask where is the video???

Thanks! I always knew there was something special about Kentucky, I just couldn’t put my finger on it!

I am definitely finishing out Max Strength. I have been waiting for Moving day since I started, so there is no way I’m skipping out. My moving day is Saturday March 28th. I’m going to film all the lifts and post them.

I think for my bench I am going to shoot for 190. As for the other lifts, I don’t really have a clue what I will do. Any thoughts on where I should begin?

I CAN’T BELIEVE I MISSED YOUR PR!!! You should have texted me!!! Susie and I would have been in Northern Ky jumping up and down for joy and then calling you a b*tch behind your back

But seriously! I can’t believe you got 170! You are so strong! I am guessing Big Jim was there spotting and coaching? Isn’t it funny how he looked at you the other day and told you that your flat bench max was prob 190? I bet you will get it when you max out for sure! He is so good at predicting those things!

As for Squat and DL… I think they will both be mid-high 2’s… maybe 260-280 on DL and 270-290 on squat? Who knows… I guess we will see!!! See you at 6:30!

I will definitely film my 1RM effort on “Moving day” in 2 weeks!

Yes Big Jim was there spotting and all of the other guys were there too all yelling and shouting out commands.

I’m bummed that you guys weren’t there too! I do hope to get another PR really soon though. I am doing single Sumo deads tonight so that will hopefully help in estimating my 1RM for deadlift.

Just curious… now with all this strength can you do a pullup with just your body weight? I remembered in the beginning, you had to add 60lbs.

The added weight was for 3 pullups. I still can’t do 3 in a row by myself. As for 1 pull up, I think I am pretty close but I haven’t tried yet.

Monday:Lower body

A.Sumo deadlift: 9 singles at appx 90 perc of max(I think I overdid the warm up for these. I need to make bigger jumps to get to 90 perc.)
235x1x4
225x1x5
I had to finish them with a lower weight because I seem to still lack some hip flexibility, so my knees were caving in. Also, I didn’t understand the whole lockout thing until last night.

B.Speed deadlift (conventional) at 70% of 1RM:
8x1x165
I feel super slow at the beginning, but faster after I get the weight at about my knees. I’m not sure why.

C.Barbell rev lunge with front squat grip:
4x8 per side x90lbs

D.Pallof press: 3x8x22.5

What did your warm up to this look like?

Here was my warm-up. Before I did this, I did my usual mobility and stretching lined out in Max strength.
1x8x89
1x6x109
1x5x135
1x3x155
1x1x185
1x1x205
1x1x225
1x1x235
I initially went up to 245 but I wasn’t getting the lock out. Then I went back down from there and started my 9 singles.

Ummm ya, I’d say you overdid your warm up. Everyone needs/likes different amount of warm up but I have no doubt that you did way too much. It took me a little bit to figure out what I like and I know I’m on the lower end. That said, after all the rolling and mobility, you are pretty warm. I’d try cutting out everything under 135 and just start with 135 as you have it. If you know you want to do 245, cut out the 235. Personally, if I knew I wanted to do 235 though, I’d take the jump from 205.

Deadlifting takes a lot out of you and especially when going for maxes, less is more. At my meet (mind you I was already warm from squats/bench and already tired from everything) I did the following to warm up to a 236lb opener:

135x5x1
185x3x1
205x1x1

Take the time now to learn how soon your body feels ready and that way, come your meet, you don’t blow your load before you hit the platform (theoretically speaking of course  )

I’m with court on this one. I did dead lift last night, 5 sets of 3 at 235 and my warm up was

135x5
175x3
205x2

So very close to what she has.

I have heard more than one person comment about people overdoing warm up at the meet and then missing attempts.

Court and Ouro,
Thanks for the advice. I was really lost on the whole warm up thing. When I first started Max strength I wasn’t doing any warm ups for lifts. I would be on the last set and the weight would suddenly feel light. So I started to add warm up stuff, but my method was quite random. I’m going to start with the layout you suggested and work from there!!!

And for all of the help, I guess I could donate 5 lbs to your bench press cause

I call dibs!

I’m doing upper body tonight. I hate upper body. I wish I could bench 170 and then maybe I wouldn’t hate it so much. Hell, I wish I could bench 135 and then maybe I wouldn’t hate it so much. Sigh…

/venting on a thread that isn’t mine

I think your logic is backwards. Maybe if you stopped being an upper body workout hater, the gym gods would bless you with being able to bench 135!!!

I can’t sleep!!! This is kind of unusual for me so it is driving me crazy. I just took a Z-12 so I’m hoping it will kick in soon. Until then I figure I will update my log.

It was the first AMAZING day we have had here in a long time, as far as weather is considerned. So instead of going to the gym I took an hour long bike ride!

From where I live, there are horse farms and backcountry roads 5 minutes away. It provides great scenery and hard core hills. At one point I hit 31 miles and hour going down a huge hill.

This was definitely a nice break from being stuck in doors doing sprints on the stationary bike while staring at a TV screen with no sound.
