Seems like all the cool kids are doing high volume these days, but it’s not my cup o’ tea. I’d rather slap more iron on :-)
But dont you worry about injury??

always depends on your goals.
I’d like to lift as much as possible and look like Deena Walsh…I also want retain all joint function and not be arthritic in my 40s, which is just 11 years away.

So tell me oh goddesses of T-Nation, is volume going to help prevent injury, or do I have to start another embarrasssing thread in “Beginners” ?

volume will not prevent injury - lifting smartly will prevent injury. repeating the same stressor on your joint 20 times is just as bad.
use fish oil
learn proper lifting forms and smartly increase weights.

you don’t have to go back to beginners. we all learn a little everyday. If you are doing volume because you like it (which a few goddesses around here do) then by all means.

everyone’s body responds differently to different methods–me, i’m crazy and have a lot of anxiety to work out so i like volume. I always have! I wish i were wired differently sometimes, but my body and mind seem to like reps.

And in complete honesty I’m prejudiced to it. I’ve tried low reps but not wholeheartedly because i just prefer my way and for me the increase in pounds is nice, but my main goal is self satisfaction form training, and i feel satisfied with doing more volume. everyone’s goals vary and are very personal and all worthwhile.

you can get injured any time–you can get hurt tying your shoe! N’s right, just try and do things rigth and you’ll be fine. and we all learn all the time, everyone should !

Ummm…Im starting to get the feeling that if you and me went out one night… we would destroy an entire block’s worth of establishments. Hurricane style. Literally 100% DESTROY. As in nothing left. I tremble at the thought.

Do you have Deena’s Walsh’s phone number? I just need to call her…

Im a happy medium type…moderate volume, moderate sets/reps…
I try to do it in a way that Im still ‘lifting heavy.’

Not like the trainers have the girls doing 15-20 reps of a million sets of the most lamest stuff you’d ever see…and then there like, ‘OMG I totally feel it!’ But could they squat there own bw correctly? probably not.

Does your gym have a rowing machine? Totally jealous! That rowing video was awesome! I may try to get into that next year when the hubby is back from deployment.

Rowing fucking rules. It’s cool because you can compete against yourself, or go out with up to 2,4,8 people…so it’s also really a team sport. The cool thing is exactly what she describes in the vid- you are in chronic nagging pain for strange time periods that are between sprints and marathons (like brute_fury’s reps) It hurts so bad, but then afterwards, an hour later, you’re totally high…and sometimes rowing, even indoors, you can get a really great high in the middle of your set…followed shortly by the wall of doom, etc. It’s a great way to really feel your strength! And you get awesome blisters!!!

Putative Much Anticipated Leg Day
Warm Up
Row - sprint 1000m. Split time 2:02min/damper 5.5

Streeetch.

I thought I’d try to squat…but alas, the left hammy is still ouchy.

Boring leg extensions
15kg x 20 1r
20kg x 15 1r
25kg x 10 3r
30kg x 10 3r
35kg x 6 3r
40kg x 3 2r
30kg x 10 2r

So bored.

Then I thought, lets see what happens if to left hammy with back extensions…apparently nothing which kind of surprised me. Actally shocking.

bodyweight x 10 1r
5kg x 10 1r
5kg arms stretched over head 10 x2r
10kg x 10 2r
20kg x 8 3r
10kg x 10 1r
5kg arms stretched over head 10 1r

I got excited and did some assisted pullups. It’s such a good feeling when all of your muscles lock into place.

Overhand 10 x 20kg assist
overhand 10 x 15kg assist
overhand 5 x 10 kg assist 2r
underhand 5 x 10 kg assist 3r
underhand body weight x 2 3r
underhand 5 x 10 kg assist 3r
overhand 4 x 15kg assist 2r

Boring calf extensions…I’ll show you volume
15kg x 30 2r
20kg x 30 2r
25kg x 20 2r
30kg x 10 2r
35kg x 5 3r
25kg x 20 2r

My special abz + a couple of planks to failure

Ye Olde Cool Down
2000m row, 2:20 damper/4 this felt so nice the last 500m.

Returned once again to Frauen corner to think about my squat form. Hammy felt pretty lose at this point. So again, hopefully by next week I can squat again. I have to take the weekend off from workouts for work travel. So there.

Oh yeah food day:
3!!! Thuringen Bratwursts!!! at 8:00 in the morning! I RULE!
4!!! eggs
Chocolate Crossaint, Ochsenaugen (literally Ox Eye; also the most delicious pastry in deutschland…Just look at those little fuckers!!! they melt in yo’ mouthz)
granola/yoghurt/milk mush X 2
1 apple, 2 bananas

Mmmmmm bratwursts!
Our bookkeeper at work is from Germany and she bakes the most delicious desserts for us. I’m sure she has made those Ox Eyes for us before. Yummy indeed!

You sure did a lot for being bored! Being bored in the gym is a killer for me - nothing at all ends up getting done.

Hope your hammy heals up soon.

Im will get my own rowing machine one day, darnit! Any good recommendation?

I could put in a suggestion at the gym too!!

At present, I’m working with high volume as well, however, even when I’m going heavy, I do lots of sets, as I tend to have a lot of energy/aggression to work off. But as these ladies are saying, lifting smartly prevents injuries. Getting adequate rest does this as well.

Digging the hands.

The very idea of you and Brute out and about together is pretty intriguing.

umn I really want to eat an ox eye.

Concept II is the best… the thing is, you need to learn from A ROWER how to use it correctly. I see people doing the weirdest shit on those things…

Been using Concept IIs for years - never learned from a rower but I do just fine. Won the rowing challenge at my gym several months ago, despite being older than the other women. Wasn’t going to let those younger bitches beat me. I’d probably be a decent rower on water but I don’t really have the inclination. My arms are a little short to be really good at it.

EE!!blush

rowing!! i’ve never given that much of a shot, because it looks fucking hard!
ohhh…i bet your traps and stuff feel it. i bet that hour later high is sweet too…i love that feeling…very addictive.

BRATWORST! ohhhhh…my…so good. I could put away quite a few of those happily… those lil ox eyes are adorable! do you have access to the stereotypical but incredible big pretzels too? i love those!

I love pastries- a forbidden food in my house. Once in a while I will take a walk to a local french cafe (whose name is my own - how cool is dat!) and order croissant or chocolatine with cafe au lait.

mmmm maybe this weekend.

GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

^^^that was a great combination of really angry and kind of hysterical

as for the injury question, I just warm up/stretch/set up form really thoroughly and carefully. I listen to my body and it tells me what is right.
