ok, so i have still not gotten a strait answer on breathing in the bench, im a beginner in a shirt, only been in one about 4 months. and i bombed out my last meet because my breathing sucked (amongst other things) so i need to to know guys, do i hold my breath the whole lift, or inhale deep then exhale on the press? plz help. thanks!
Hold it the whole rep. Some guys can take a breath before the handoff and hold it the whole time. Most take a breath at the top before you start, and hold it the whole way.

^What he said. Your whole body will feel tight and more steady. You wont have that wobble that you get when your breathing in on the down and out on the up push (not sure but that was the habbit I got into when I started lifting).
Get tight before you take that breath.
I’m just learning too, but breath is really really important when you bench in a shirt. right at handoff what I do is push my chest up harder, drive my heels and take a big breath and hold it, as the bar comes out I am locking my elbows and pinching my shoulder blades down (shirt pulls them up) at the same time. Its actually really taxing just to hold the right starting position.
thanks all for your tips, thats what i needed to hear!
Yep, holding your breath will help keep you tight and it’s one more thing you don’t have to remember to do (breathing). A tip: if you have trouble touching the last inch or so and you have arched all you can and all that let just a little bit of air out it will let a bit of slack in the shirt and allow you to touch. Learn to let just a little out thru pursed lips, you don’t want to have a complete blow out and lose it ok.
Good luck in the shirt they can be a Futhermucker to learn and get good in but it’s fun as shit!! - IMHO
