I’m surprised you hadn’t heard this. There was a good five year run of people proclaiming macros are all that matter. Just a pendulum swing now to quality of food mattering more. Instagram influencers were fast all day, then eat a steak, potatoes and ice cream cake. Because, IIFYM, you’re good.
I loosely utilize iifym with a bend for high protein and I typically have nutrient dense foods in the mix.
The concept in general got a little silly with the ice cream sandwiches and cake or whatever, but as a practice with reasonable food selection it works well.
I personally find it funny that the fitness industry was able to package and literally sell a balanced diet with caloric limits. Shows how twisted up the industry in general is looking for angles to manipulate and capitalize on.
“Don’t eat too much and make sure you eat your broccoli” is really all it takes unless you’re looking for a very specific, super lean body fat goal or water manipulation or something. Which is generally temporary for a competition or show prep anyways.
Like, when I cut sodium- it was a secondary effect that diet improved, simply because the majority of foods that are low in sodium are also good for you.
Whereas others hear “Oh. I can live off of butter cream icing and Jim Beam now!”.
Plus if I remember correctly, selling sensible eating as an official diet overlapped the bulletproof coffee and “dietary cholesterol is basically tren for your muscles” era, so there was a lot of confusion for the monkey see, monkey do practitioners.
I’ve read Never Let Go, basically all of his T Nation articles and have hunted him out on other forums, just have never heard him mention that. Or maybe I have and forgot. I use to listen to his podcast but got out of audible media for a while and honestly forgot he had one until now. Man, I also found this crazy PDF of his writings a while back. Can’t remember how or where I found it though. I love those types of gems.
I’m certainly not disputing it, actually it’s what I’ve been doing the past two months as I lean out. But mostly because I hadn’t drank coffee in a year and a half and I’m drinking as much as I can before I take a break again because I binge like that.
Oh man, if you’re a fan of his written work, you absolutely owe it to yourself to read his Easy Strength Omnibook and then follow on of Easy Strength for Fat Loss. Even if you have NO interest in following Easy Strength, the Omnibook is like a collection of all of his greatest thoughts on training, the Fat Loss goes further into life and nutrition.
His podcast is so worth picking up again. It comes out weekly, and for me, it the ultimate podcast “palate cleanser”. I’ll go down SO many podcasts rabbit holes, and then, once a week, I get to sit back and let Dan John ground me back in reality.
Yup. See it in the carnivore space too. “Hey guys, I’m eating 2lbs of bacon a day cooked in butter and snacking on pork rinds and cheese with my heavy cream and butter coffee. For some reason, the weight still isn’t dropping. Am I undereating?”
