Betterman, I don’t know your current activity level, but you may want to look into martial arts and/or yoga. In one of life’s weird synchronistic moments, I met a psychotherapist while on vacation and started chatting about neuroscience. With me being both a bio-nerd and a martial artists we got to talking about the structural changes that occur in the brain from martial arts (also the paradoxical relationship where behavior determines brain structure but structure determines behavior.)
The therapist said he recommends martial arts to 100% of all his patients and that a 5 year study was just published by a Boston based researcher that showed the combination of martial arts/yoga to be more beneficial than any SSRI/antidepressant on the market. When I’m down at school I’ll see if I can find teh study and give some more specifics.
Anecdotally I notice that if i’m feeling down there’s nothing like a good hard class down the dojo to get me feeling right.
Taman, thanks for your reply! I would be interested to see the study. I believe it 100%.
Indeed, I have some experience with martial arts, having done Shaolin kung-fu for almost a year. I have also done yoga as well. You are absolutely correct about the level of intense focus and aliveness after a session. After a session I noticed:
overall enhanced state of being
disregard for petty things and intense focus on tasks at hand
total body relaxation
a mind like a clean slate
The only down side? This effect only lasted from 1-1.5 hours after the session. After that I was fatigued (didn’t know Surge existed, lol)
Now that we are on that topic, I also wholeheartedly recommend meditation, and by this I simply mean staring at the floor for 20 minutes. This has helped me improve my focus enormously as well, and recent research suggests the same neural changes over the long-term.
I discontinued both yoga and kung fu recently because I want to focus on resistance training. While martial arts is the end in and of itself - and I promised my shifu that I would return lest he beat my ass (lol) - right now my priorities are to get strong. After a whole lifetime of doing sports, I finally realized that my body type can only be improved with resistance training. Which is why I’m on the best forum right now.
The benefits of Modafinil (on European brand “Modiodal”) that I most liked were:
alertness for a period of around 48 hours (important because of my job)
precise control over napping times
better study and info processing (of course)
a clarity of thought that cut through all distractions like an arrow.
The downside:
extreme perception of all the noises occurring in a classroom setting as well as getting easily annoyed with little things. I guess the disciplined thinking of the martial arts could come in handy there…
Thanks for the suggestion, and I will definitely go back to the martial arts once I make some progress on my fitness goals. Brain supps may not be necessary by then, but then again, I like getting the best of all worlds.
Thank you all for the wonderful advice on these forums, you usually do not find a group of people who are willing to spend a few min. of their own time to help someone out!!
Background : I’m a computer science student with loads of material to cover and a very narrow time slot.
Current : Its Day #4 in this cycle and my mind is always in a calm and awake kind of state most of the day. I have been upping the doses and inserting compounds since day #1.

Sides : Dry mouth upon wake…
Next upgrade : Work my way up to 20mg of vinpo.
Glad it’s working for you mate, but you might want to look again at the choline dose.
It should be 1-3g as I recall (off the top of me head).

Very interesting.
I’m wondering what you would consider your state when you wake up using that stack, other than the dry mouth.
Also, I hear that taking choline at night increases dream recall and leads to a more refreshed feeling upon waking. Anybody report this effect?
Hey guys, well I’ve decided to jump on the brain train. Great thread ya got going too, took me a while to skim through all 27 pages. I’ve got a similar story to some of you, late 20’s going back to school etc. So last semester I was taking 40-60 mg’s of vinpo and about 800 mg’s of Aniracetam twice a day.
I didn’t get the feeling of being able to focus as some of you but I expected that. I tend to be very nonsensative to most drugs. I also would mix in some piracetam as well. While I didn’t feel much from this my test score increased steadily throughout the semester.
For this current semester I ran out and didn’t use anything for the first few weeks. I did notice that I didn’t recall info quite as well and was generally slower mentally.
So I made an order the other day and now will be running vinpo and ani steady and will be mixing in piractam and oxiracetam as well as Spike. I also picked up some dimethylamylamine as well for no other reason than it was on special at BN.
I have a couple of questions. What are your thoughts on using lecithan granuals as my source of choline? I’ve been using the lecithan and even with a massive dose of piracetam didn’t get the headaches that some people got when no choline was used.
Also what is your take on Idebone? I believe Bushy was using it early on. Is anyone using it still?
huperzine, centrophenoxine, and adrafinil sound rather intriging as well.
I would like to start some Nootropics to increase focus and brain function. I am wondering what product I should start with and is it necessary to stack Nootropics?
AlphaStar, begin on page one. I’m not being a dick, just stating that the answers are at the beginning of this thread, where the same question was posed.

I took your advice and along with some other research I found out a lot about nootropics. I have a few questions:
It seems as though the recatem drugs help with general cognitive abilities such as problem solving, memory retention, etc. Now I have noticed that there are both fat souluable ones and water soluble ones, are the water soluble ones like Oxi the ones that give you quicker results vs. the long term dosing vinpocetine, which is fat soluble?
I am on a college budget and am interested in the bare essentials that will help me focus better and be more alert, what would my best choices be and where can I find these?
I was thinking Oxiracetam in the short term as needed and Vinpocetine for the long term to improve cognitive abilities.
As far as a eugeroic I am unsure as to what would give me the best bang for my buck as I know Moda is expensive, would adrafinil be a better alternative?

I think you should add in the huperzine already. It’s cheap as chips and for me, seems to be the ‘missing link’, i.e. it ties everything else in together nicely.

Thanks for the tip Bushy, I’ll look into getting some huperzine. If anyone has any recommendations as to where to aquire some huperzine a pm would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

To my mind, a nootropics stack that is ‘budget friendly’, would be vinpo and huperzine A.

Thanks Bushy. What do you suggest for dosing on these two to start?

I ended up ordering some huperzine and centrophenox from unique nutrition. Hopefully they are reputable.
I’m really excited about the centro. I have a history of concusions, one particular 2 week period of being concussed multiple times where I ended up laying bed vomiting for a week and severe pain for weeks afterward. Along with the general stupor that comes with getting your bell rung.
My dad (50)was complaing recently about his short term memory so I got him started on a vinpo/ani protocol. Today was his first day, just got off the phone with him and he reports that “this stuff works great” Said he was able to just fly through his paperwork.

Even though I have increased the hours of study I don’t seem to wake up from a deep sleep and the need to fight morning miasma is close to zero. Also, I’m getting way more horny dreams then ever which is a plus…
