BBB: Nootropics for Studying

Yo B3.

I need advice on nootropics. My g/f wants an aid to study but has never taken nootropics whatsoever.

What do you consider the healthiest nootropic with the biggest bang for the buck, and relatively low sides (like fatigue)?

For cheapness, it’s hard to go past piracetam + choline. In my experience, piracetam by itself is a recipe for headaches and drowsiness, but with choline it lends a subtle concentration effect.

I found adrafinil to be fantastic for concentration and mental stamina, but it wipes me out the next day.

Due to the complexities of neurochemistry and the variability of each person’s neurophysiological makeup, YMMV. A lot.

I guess my advice is: buy cheap, safe ones and try them. Don’t bother with expensive stuff.

I got some piracetam while ago, haven’t really used it much as I didn’t notice anything by itself, anyone recommend a cheap, but good choline source, and what sort of dose would you take per serving of piracetam?

There are lots of choline sources. The Alpha-GPC supplement is actually a form of choline. It’s the best, but most expensive.

Choline … citrate? Bitatrate? It’s been a while. One of those is the cheapest form.

You could also get choline from lectithin tablets, though bear in mind it’s a soy product.

Go to the Noop thread in the S and N forum. It’s a long thread, but worth reading.

I think these are the ones he’s referring to:

BBBBBB-

Are the supplements you listed available OTC? Are these things that one can take regularly, or is the protocol you described (for example) just for short term use, like during “exam weeks” or so?

Not to put words in his mouth but I know he’s in a different time zone so I’ll hit this for him.

They’re all legal OTC. Modafinil is a class IV in the US, but it’s precursor adrafinil is not, but there’s a whole lot more to those two than just that (possibly toxicity with Adrafinil).

I use nootropics daily. You stop noticing the effects as much but you’re still aware of them, especially when you get A’s on exams in hard courses. Ani, DMAE, and Vinpo are all okay for long term use.

You need to take them all together with some regularity (few weeks) for the maximum benefits.

You could take them for a few weeks before something requiring some serious mental acrobatics and there no reason you couldn’t use them all the time. Hell, I plan to be on nootropics (Ani, DMAE, and Vinpo with a sprinkling of Oxi when I need it) for the foreseeable future.

Edit: Corrected my own spelling.

Looking through amazon.com right now, but like most supplements, i’m worried about quality.

Any good brands to follow? 1fast400 keeps popping up for this stuff, but a couple reviews say it has lackluster

quality.

Bumping this post up because A: It is incredibly useful, and B: What about quality? what brand do you recommend BBBBBBBBB?

Wait, BushidoBadBoy is, Niacin?

What the flush?

I tried vinpo and DMAE. I didn’t notice their effects. If anything, I found it harder to concentrate in the time period I was taking them (fall quarter 2009).

It could have been due to other factors, but I’m not convinced.

What brand do you recommend?

I’m having similar results. I started taking nootropics about two months ago, and it appears as if they are having the opposite effect on me than what they claim.

Maybe someone here can help?

I’m currently taking:
DMAE 100 mg
Vinpocetine 10 mg
Aniracetam 750 mg
Choline 420 mg

I take all 4 supps 3 times a day, with food, about 4 hours apart. I’m also taking fish oil, and a mutli.

I don’t know if it’s me, or what, but I feel like my mind gets more cloudy, I have to think about things a little longer, and I get confused much more easily.

Hoping someone here could give me some suggestions. Thanks.

i bought my stuff from Smart powders. Current stack of vinpo, dmae, aniracetam, oxiracteam. I also like adding a bit of caffeine into this as i feel the effects a lot more.

Here’s my experience with Piracetam. I took it many years ago (forgot the dose), but after a couple of weeks, my brain felt creative. I know that sounds weird, but I’m not sure how else to describe it. I even experienced creativeness while I was sleeping.

Let me give you an example:
I would dream that I was reading newspapers or magazines, and my mind actually made up articles. I would wake up remembering all these weird, but highly complex and detailed magazine articles.
I was not remembering anything that I had read. My brain made up all these stories/articles.
I’m not the artistic or creative type, so these dreams would always surprised me each and every time.

BBB what is your opinion on taking adderall in the order of somewhere between 7.5mg and 30mg daily? Usually 7.5 dosed twice.

Are there long term negative effects related to these dosages, and if so would only dosing 4/7 days of the week lend itself to preventing this?

thanks

I can comment on this, obviously not as an expert.

I took it to study for finals, and definitely it is helpful for concentration. It’s almost as if you feel like the problem (I was doing chemistry) is solving itself.

The problem is that your appetite is supressed (hardcore) and jitters and sweat are a side effect. Bad for lifters, obviously.

My friend who has a scrip (she has add and doesn’t always take it… that’s where I got it from) says she dislikes it and has noticed the appetite supression. She feels like it changes her pesonality.

Another friend with ADD says he prefers ritalin because it is much more predictable in when its effects will begin and wear off.

My 2 cents, obviously I’m not an expert though.

I feel their effects a lot more when I combine with them with a racetam, like ani. The effects can also take a few days to build up - especially so with DMAE. People report a mild ‘stimulant’ effect from it after about 2.5-3 weeks, and I can say I feel it too.
