I am taking it upon myself to create some Gym Rules to help clear up issues like this.

Rule #1- If someone asks- “How much ya bench hoss??” The person being asked must assume they are talking about a full ROM bench brought down to the chest and taken to full lockout without a spotter touching it. This rule also applies to squat as well-squat to at least parallel without a spotter wrapped around you. Also, these lifts are also to be assumed to be free weighted, not smith or hammmerzzz strength.

Feel free to add to the list of Gym Rules. Although adoption of said rule must be approved by me to become law. I feel qualified for such an endeavor considering I have been both a bodybuilder and powerlifter and am not biased either way.

So if you are a taller lifter do you get to include a multiplier to your weight? Consider that at 6’3 in order to complete a full range of motion (ie touch the tits) I have to move the bar a full 3 feet where the avg joe is probably only doing 2 feet. Since my overall workload is higher what’s my multiplier?
nope…no multipliers. suck it up and get bigger. besides, you are probably a good deadlifter and that more than makes up for your shitty bench. I have t-rex arms and am a decent bencher and truely suck at deadlifting but I’m not going to ask for special treatment since i was born with basically my hands attached to my shoulders.
Actually my bench is better than my DL - I’m working on it lol.

Aside form that, what does it matter what you bench? If you are doing 1RM for bench, you probably are not making gains.

If you powerlift -Fantastic, when’s your next comp.

If you are a bodybuilder and worried about yours or anyone else’s max lift (for anything) you need to do more homework.
are you call’n me out hoss?? LOL. my entire post was sarcastic.

your entire post drips with ignorance. “if you are doing 1 rm for bench, you probably are not making progress.” do i really even need to reply to this.

also…“If you powerlift-Fantastic, when’s your next comp.” I don’t go around flaunting it but I’m a sponsored powerlifter by Charles Staley the Creator of EDT. In my last meet I benched 510lb Raw on my second attempt and narrowly missed 520lb on my third. My next meet is in October where i hope to competition bench over 500lbs with a reverse grip.

And yes… I was a bodybuilder as well. Agian… i don’t go around flaunting it but I’ve probably competed in more bodybuilding competitions than anyone else in this bodybuilding forum. I never placed lower than fifth and won many height and weight classes as well as overalls.

One thing you are right about is that you can never do enough homework… i’ll give you that one.

so what have you done hoss???

Lol ive found the only way i can really grab the handles in a comfortable grip is if Hyena Pulls them up a little, otherwise i got some retarded, half grip where half of my lats are hanging off the bench.

no… i did need to apologize. i should have read your post more than once. I can be very hot headed at times and do my best to not get into petty internet arguements.

thanks…yeah… that’s the reason i lift… to compete. for years it was bodybuilding and now it’s powerlifting. i usually compete 3-4 times a year, mostly National or World championships now.

The most asked question of any reasonably big dude is “How much do you bench.” I just don’t understand the people who are so self deluded as to believe that their partial ROM qualifies as an honest answer to the question.

Aslo, the one rep max calculator for bench is even more wrong for partial ROM.

Now see the minor confusion caused between MM & myself. This is why you don’t need to run around talking about How much do you bench.

Now I’m leaving to go do some work - I’ve waisted enough time on the interwebz today.

Retarded response. If someone is asking me how much I bench, 99% of the time they don’t care about some long drawn out answer about what hammer strength machines are, when I first benched 405 or anything else. Most of the people asking this question don’t even lift seriously…so it doesn’t really matter what you say.

My answer lately is “a lot”, and then I keep moving. If they ask what is a lot, I say what I use for HS presses. If they ask HOW I do them, THEN I go into more detail.

I am not going to unload some whole fucking spiel of how I lift every time I get asked this question.

It seems strange that an avid bodybuilder would avoid one of the fundamental lifts, aka the bench press, and instead just tell people “a lot.” Maybe you are worried you can’t do a full ROM 405 bench anymore. Strength and ego go hand in hand. It would be easiest for you just to do a full ROM bench and then continue on whatever program works best for you.

???

Many pro bodybuilders don’t even use the barbell anymore. Even Dennis James (who once made fun of HS machines) is now working with Charles Glass using them almost exclusively…so what are you talking about?

If I haven’t even done a barbell bench in several years, then OBVIOUSLY, it would take me some time to get back into a solid groove doing them again…but why the hell would I do that when I am seeing more progress with HS machines?

Are you more developed?

Why no pics with all of your “knowledge”?

Exactly. I could say 400 or 500 and most people wouldn’t know the difference.

(FTR I have no idea what I BP, I haven’t done it in a couple years and have no desire to find out)

I’m starting to think that 90% of the people here are trolls.

Lately when people ask how much I bench, my genuine first response is to laugh at that ridiculous cliche. Then they get upset.

If they persist and its a friend or someone I want to help with their training, I’ll tell them about my incline db bench. Otherwise I like to steal Kai’s response and say “not enough”

Anytime a littler guy comes up to me and asks me what i bench, ive started replying “Wrong question.”

We wont go into delusions or false appeals of self grandeur, because quite frankly, people could very easily lose their egotistical foundations of their persona and crumble.

What I really dont understand is the need to chime in by every person who has stepped foot into a gym and pitch their 2 cents about a topic that has had the same 3 opinions thrown back and forth.

Frankly, if someone isnt or hasnt been beyond my level, your opinion in terms acceptable ROM Or movements doesnt matter to me.

I bodybuild. I havent done a set of less than 5 in years, so i dont know my 1RM. I know what ive repped, i know what i push week in and week out. Whether it deems acceptable to others isnt really my prerogative.

This thread is retarded period. One bragging about any of One’s lifts is shear stupidity. What, you want a fucking cookie? I dont care. If im bigger than you, and you say you bench more, im gonna turn, Give you a BIG OLE fucking smile, raise both thumbs, and simply say “Cooly Story Bro!”

If im not bigger than you, and you still randomly tell me how much you bench, the reply you will get will be “Cool, sucks about your penis size though.” I know i sure as hell dont ask people what the lift. I dont care. It doesnt bother me. Nor should it any of you.

lol…

anyways I like these topics, considering we are on a bodybuilding website that gets more action in it’s GAL and SAMA sections I always love to see discussion, no matter how stupid it may be on weightlifting.
