Brad Gillingham's DL Training

For those of you who have tried this routine, how did it work? How did the volume feel?

i’m assuming you bought the dvd-it’s pretty good although i could not handle the volume–had my knees aching pretty good, fyi- I lasted about a month, i htink it works well, but ihad nothing left on my event days for strongman so i dropped it, i think it would work well for those who are PLing only.

I used a modified 8 week offseason program of his once before and i did so-so on it. I made decent gains but nothing outrageous. im currently in week 6 of a 9 week meet prep using his deadlift routine and am doing fine. I’ve been going by prilepin for years now so im sort of used to the volume. Keep at it.

Which routine are you talking about? The one on the DVD or on the Jackal’s Gym website?

I’m doing the one on the DVD.

If you’re having trouble adjusting to the volume try a small bit of gear. (ie a belt maybe some suit bottoms) this will help get you through some of those rough days when you feel like giving up. Also one trick with his program is to really keep the weights light to moderate. A lot of guys calculate their percentages on some outrageous 1rm that they can barely hit and end up struggling through the cycle. I won’t make that mistake again.

I know the program well. Your initial post is ambiguous. What specifically are your concerns/questions.

I just wanted to know what you guys who have done this program think of it. Did your DL and squat improve much? Is it a solid program? Much caryover to strongman?

I’m starting another Brad Gillingham deadlift routine, not the one from his DVD. Here is the URL:

I’m doing Week 1 of this routine tomorrow. Hopefully it will take me from 495 to 505-525 on the 15th week. There are 14 weeks of training and then you attempt a new max 7-10 days after the last (14th) week.

If anyone has any experience with this particular routine, can you post in this thread? Thanks.

EDIT: After discussing it with a friend, I decided to skip Phase 1 (the first four weeks) because that looks like it’s intended mainly for beginners.

What would you like to know?

Are you doing it in conjunction with the RAW 5x5’s?

If you aren’t, do!!! (I’m just coming off the cycle and it’s pretty amazing to say the least.)

Nevermind.

Yes, I’m doing both.

Assuming you chose good starting points the program weaves together very well and should yield a nice increase to total leg, lower back strength and core stability will increase quite a bit, as well.

Make sure you are taking the squats deep and don’t overdo it on the rack pull PR’s.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. So far the routine has been tough, but it’s feeling good. I feel like I’m finally getting somewhere, I should have done something like this years ago- my workouts have never really had much logic behind them. Starting this had made me realize I’m not as strong or conditioned as I thought I was, surprise surprise…

It’s nice that this routine was designed for the drug free lifter too.

Sounds like it wasn’t good for you then.

well it did up my dead and front squat, but when your training heavy events, i dont feel that it’s the appropriate program, at least not for me… more power to you if you can handle heavy lower body work 4 times a week(program + events day)…but like i said, i think it would be fine for someone whi is PL’ing only
