Wow…I’m amazed that this forum has kept my attention for this long. Especially given the debate about religion and such. I’m eagerly awaiting the release of this movie here in Germany, especially since it’s an action flick starring Denzel. Why Denzel? Man on Fire says it all.
I’m not at all concerned about his range as an actor. He makes a badass tough guy. A man’s man, so to speak. As for the religion thing, if the movie’s premise is to bring people of ALL faiths and beliefs together, I see nothing wrong with it. Let me see, a movie with a final message of peace and unity, or a “safe” movie that tries not to offend anyone. I’ll go with the former, as you’ll be hard pressed to find any movie out there that won’t offend anyone.
Hell, if anything, this movie reminds me of the Matrix trilogy and the “religious” undertones in it. Oh well. And I happen to like Keanu and Cage movies, as well. Just saying… lol

See, this is why I like you.
I don’t think I could stand to even sit in a “safe” movie that doesn’t offend anyone AND tries to be politically correct. I think there is too much fighting and killing in this movie for it to be embraced by Christian religious groups anyway.
If anything, this has to be the most neutral movie I have ever seen as far as a religious topic is concerned.
Faith itself is not religion.
A man who has no firm beliefs is no threat at all. A man who has faith that what he believes is right is one hard man to take down.
If THAT message offends people, why would anyone care about their opinion anyway?

I know what you mean but there is no way that the math works out on this one.
How so? I guess it depends on what you consider “corrupt”. All humans…ALL OF US…lie. It is human nature to look out for your own best interests…thus the disloyalty.
There are individuals who can rise above this and become better human beings. That doesn’t mean we wouldn’t rip each other apart if all of the lights went out.
If you want to know what true human nature is, cut of all power to a major city, erase all financial transactions, and sit back and watch them rip each other apart given enough time.
We act cordial with each other largely because there are consequences to not being that way.
If society crumbles and anarchy rises, there are no social consequences.
No, I was literally refering to the math.
Most people cannot be average or below average.
You sound like that American president who was shocked, SHOCKED!, that a whopping half of all Americans had an iq lower than 100.
So I say thee, since by definition average is smack in the middle and you think that most people are below average it just might be that “average” is a lot dumber than you think and your idea of “average” is just off.
Sorry Orion,
I think you are confusing “average” with “median”. By definition, “Median” is the center point of a distribution with an equal occurrence of points falling above and below. Therefore, it is quite possible for more than half of a population to be below the average. Take the following numbers: 1,2,3,10. The average of these numbers = 4. Clearly, most of the numbers are below average, as it likely is regarding IQ, where you have a smaller group of people with a disproportionately higher intelligence that raise the average above the median intelligence.

No X in your fantasy land faith means something, in Real Life I can knock out a man with Faith in religion, as well as I can knock out a man with no faith. You need to just go back to lifting weights because you fail at being able to discuss things with out attacking people. I was pretty open and tolerant early on but then I realized you aren’t worth it. You are one of them guys that think they know everything and no one else could possibly be right. And no I am not saying anything about your religion or Race. You are just an unbearable asshole.

LOL.
In real life, you can cut a man’s hand off, burn his house down, rape his wife and slap him…and the man who is able to shake that off and keep coming at you is someone who believes in something…whether that be in their own ability to continue, in their belief that their destiny is greater, or even in their own anger and spite at who is responsible…but some fire is there pushing them forward.
Yes, you could definitely knock a man out. I’ve been beaten up before. I’ve been ridiculed, spat on and even once told that there is no way in hell I will succeed in life at all.
However, what pushed me to prove every single one of those fuckers wrong was the deep belief that my purpose is greater than what some might believe no matter how vocal they are.
You can try to discredit that all you want to. You can make it seem as if it means nothing…but anyone who has actually been through shit and were able to see light at the end of it even when it was pitch black AND succeed in the end are the types of people who had some sort of faith in something. They had some kind of fire pushing them forward.
I also don’t expect you to get this. That is why I didn’t respond to what you wrote earlier.
There are leaders in this world and followers. I know exactly which group I fall into.
I know it because I have been tested and tried.
We have all faced our challenges, these events shape who we are. And the way you explain faith, I have plenty of faith, in myself. I won’t discredit that at all, or even try to. That is how a man should get through life with faith in themselves. I agree with what you said in that post completely. I think a man can be a good person by just having faith in himself, and live a fulfilling life with out needing to subscribe to any religion, some choose a certain religion to be a part of and some need to be a part of a religion, either way no matter which one of those you are it is ok to be any of them. I have friends that are totally religious and friends that are conveinent religous people, as well as people that don’t believe in a specific religion.

Now don’t even try to say the muslim terrorists aren’t driven by religion. Muslim terrorist percieve what they do as defending their religion from the other religions and cultures of the world. In all honesty the most violent religion out there is the so called peaceful religion of Islam. Then look at the situation in Ireland the catholics vs. the protestants. And isn’t it Israel and paestine that are always fighting over the holy land marks or whatever it is they fight over all the time. Hitler trying to exterminate the jews was pure evil also, but I don’t know if that was his religious beliefs that drove him to do it or a blind hatred of the jews. Either way they were picke for extermination by their religious beliefs.
FWIW the jews were persecuted because they had control of the banking system which left them to blame for the economic issues of the day but then again they had control of the banking system because of their religion so either way you want to think about it. But getting back to the thread topic I thought the movie was pretty badass
Grneyes and I saw it the other night and we both loved it.
It had ‘just enough’ of everything and it delivered a great message without being preachy.

Nah, brah.
You sure?
Ya, he was a follower of the occult. And it wasn’t so much Darwinism as he just wanted to decide who should live and who shouldn’t.
To bad he used those orating skills for evil. Imagine if he could have got all of europe on his side for some thing good. Imagine the amazing things Europe could have done, united under one ruler and pointed in a direction that truly helped humanity instead of extinguishing so many lives for nothing. He could have been a hero instead he is the most evil mother fucker to walk the planet. What a waste it all was.

Faith can give you the reason to keep going, but it’s up to you to do the moving.

Yes, Drewh seriously. I disagree with everything the guy did, but if he would have been a good hearted person and had the orating skills to get a whole nation behind him like he did think of all the evils in the world they could have righted. He could have put that whole nation onto solving a problem and threw all the resources of the nation at the problem.
I mean seriously think of the possibilities, if only he wouldn’t have been an evil piece of shit. I hope some day we see a leader come to power here in America for the cause of good that can unite us all, maybe then shit will get straightened out.

We did have a good hearted leader back in the 70’s. Jimmy Carter.
You need more than just one good, decent, human being in Congress and the white house… So, it ain’t happening.

It’s just so unrealistic. You really think if Germany wasn’t a shit hole post WW1 they would have listened to him? Because they wouldn’t have.

The same goes for Stalin and Russia.

Fixed.
EDIT: This is the worst movie discussion ever.
I thought the movie was good, not great. The story was original and interesting (even though I’m not religious), there was good action, and the twist at the end was cool. But, something was missing for me.
Mila Kunis is gorgeous.
Gary Oldman is one of the most entertaining bad guys ever, and he was not very entertaining in this movie. I don’t know what I expected from him, but it was more than I got.
Denzel was Denzel. Dude is solid in every movie he’s ever made.
