i liked the movie till i realized the whole thing was religious propaganda and then that kinda pissed me off. Also not as much action as i was expecting from the ending. So overall i guess it was decent and worth the watch but it you dont like religion or have a problem with it i wouldnt waste your time
Alright, I was waiting for someone to make that argument…because it is utter bullshit.

Spoiler:

What religious propaganda? The hero of the movie realized the power that is held within religion and I am glad one of the last scenes showed many religious texts from many different faiths…because the message would be the same if he was carrying the Koran (only not as widely received in America).

The Villain of the movie understood that people would literally come to him for leadership based on religious faith…and anyone who can’t understand how that is true is likely too dull to get the true message.

In a world that has been destroyed completely, how is it you don’t understand the power the man would have who held a holy text?

People turn away from religion when they perceive themselves as being in control of their environment and their lives…much like America today. Most humans in this country have advantages and comforts that people 200 years ago didn’t have access to. People turn back to religion when they feel a lack of control of their surroundings…or if they hold the belief that the world/universe holds more purpose than simply living a life only for yourself with no ultimate consequences at the end of it other than death.

How is this “propaganda”?

Please explain.
This deserves a bump

SPOILER ALERT! (read it from the top)
the part in which he says, ‘some people think this book caused the war, i think it will save us’ or something of that nature to the girl i believe, just bleeds the fact that the intentions are to tell you that religion is good and the will triumph ‘evil’ always. It also promotes religion being good, saving and will make you righteous in a sense. Im also just a pissy teenager so w/e

…which goes to show just how much people HATE religion. They can’t even let an idea in their head if you even show a picture of a bible (mind you THIS BIBLE HAD NO WORDS IN IT AND THEY STILL GOT PISSED).

Every negative review I’ve read sounds like an atheist having a nervous breakdown after having been forced to sit in church when the truth is, half of the movie was body parts getting cut off and hand to hand combat.

Something is wrong here.
you say that like people of other faiths wouldnt get pissed at relgions of there own, religous people are not the ownly ones who get ‘nervous breakdowns’ when they think they feel threatened by others views, many wars have been fought over relgion so i dont think its just of you to say atheists are the only one who dislike religion. If anyone tries to force something that you dont believe in whethers its relgion, an activity you dont want to do, a book etc… you would get upset.

Religion is a broad word. It encompasses all faith, and that is what we are talking about. We are talking about religion in the broad sense of the word, not specific faiths, which is also what I mentioned is the biggest problem in calling this movie religious propaganda. It talks about religion in the broad sense of the word, but uses the bible as the premise for the story line. It also indeed shows all the books of each major faith. In sense, we are not talking about religion vs religion. We are talking about religion through the view of atheists, who are the ones who have been having the largest problems with the movie.

i dont think you can deny the movie is very pro religion as a savior and other elements such as those

Yeah, Bignate I would say it definitely had the religous symbols and all that in it. Denzel who sacrificed himself so that others had hope. The Virginal little girl= Mary. But, I don’t think it was horrible about shoving religion down our throats it could have been much worse. And besides we aren’t catholic or christian so we can’t boycott movies based on content or books for that matter. And truth be told I would burn every Holy text I could get my hands on as well, just like in the movie.

This movie was neutral as far as any particular faith…which means anyone claiming “religious propaganda” either doesn’t realize what “propaganda” means, or they didn’t pay attention to the movie and simply threw a hissy fit upon seeing a book with no words in it that had a cross on the front.

I mean, I understand that symbolism and metaphors are rare in current society, but if the image of a wordless book doesn’t stand out to you as symbolic then you must be one of those who never read any form of poetry as a kid that they weren’t forced to read in class.

All major religious texts were presented in this movie at the end as standing side by side with the Bible. Again, welcome to symbolism.

This explains why some of us have to explain things on such a straight-forward level on this site. Most people seem as if poetic symbolism is a foreign concept to them.

So much for “culture”.

LOL!!! Yet you don’t understand what I meant by the premise of the movie being proven by the reaction of the atheists watching it???

This is hilarious. It really is.

I give this movie a lot of credit…just for the reaction alone.

I’m going to start calling it Bizarro Avatar.

Also, if you don’t understand the strength a man has who simply has faith (specific religion or belief is irrelevant), then this discussion is pointless. I wish we had better debates on this forum.

They pay.

That is pretty much it. Some may be more hands on than others, but they seem to simply be the guys with the pocket books who get the ball rolling.

But like I said, go see Book of Eli!

Fuck the naysayers, go see BOOK OF ELI!

Fuck the Denzel haters(Flash), go see BOOK OF ELI!

Grow a pair of balls, go see BOOK OF ELI!

Some do that. Others find the people to pay for it. On top of that, they hire and gather the people and resources needed so the director can do their job of turning the script into a moving picture show. Many directors are also producers.

They’re kind of like General Managers for football teams.

That’s all producers do? Over-payed mother fuckers. Thanks Doug and X

As I said, go see:

The first issue I have with your statement is who is an atheist in this thread? I assume you mean me as one, and I am not. Secondly, you assume it would be the atheists that would burn the holy texts. I doubt it very much as an atheist would not give a shit about your holy books. Yes, I agree the movie is a lot more fun to watch because we are actually having a fun debate about it and its meanings. As for the time in the movie all the religous books are in order and alligned together I would love to see that happen for real, where every religion accepts all the others. Then all the religions could just chill out and quit killing eachother.

What? Do you think any radicalist Muslim cares whether you are Christian or not? You perceive this as a war against other religions? There is more war on this planet over resources than there is between two different religions.

Now don’t even try to say the muslim terrorists aren’t driven by religion. Muslim terrorist percieve what they do as defending their religion from the other religions and cultures of the world. In all honesty the most violent religion out there is the so called peaceful religion of Islam. Then look at the situation in Ireland the catholics vs. the protestants. And isn’t it Israel and paestine that are always fighting over the holy land marks or whatever it is they fight over all the time. Hitler trying to exterminate the jews was pure evil also, but I don’t know if that was his religious beliefs that drove him to do it or a blind hatred of the jews. Either way they were picke for extermination by their religious beliefs.
