Boilerman Wants It All

That face you pull and shake of the head at 2.56. I know that look. I know it all too well.

I really like mixing 1 trip down bear hugged, 1 trip back front racked, 1 down right shoulder, 1 down left shoulder. With the right length it’s a barn burner but you still feel like you’re sorta in control of your body.

The strongman in me is just opposed to shoulder carries, most likely because they are rarely allowed. But I also will rotate between implement weights in a single medley. For using a single weight, I can see that working.

@carlbm I shake my head a ton in my training. It is legit an argument between my brain and body the whole time, haha.

@T3hPwnisher @garagerocker13 awesome, those are exactly the type of ideas I was looking for. Thank you.

I’m really excited to get them and start working with them. I think atlas stones would be amazing too. The molds are pretty inexpensive so I’m considering saving up for a couple sizes when they’re back in stock.

Edit: tried liking all the posts, but the forum is acting crazy.

How much did you pay for the sandbags if you don’t mind me asking? I’d love to have a 200 pounder. Mine is “rated” to 150 but I don’t know that I can fit that much in it.

Yeah I can sympathize. Its the “Why the hell did I think this was a good idea” look.

This is where I got the 200lb from, it was just over $100. I bought the 150 non closeout for $90. Looks like the only difference between the two is the 200 laces up differently I guess? @garagerocker13

Thanks dude!

I really enjoy sandbag throws over shoulder. It’s a good way to work dynamically with a relatively heavy bag. You’re basically just shouldering it and throwing it back over your shoulder. I try to do these as quickly as I can, working on a fast pick, not spending too much time between picks. Figuring out how to not fuck around with bag positioning and whatnot. Sandbag is one event where a lot of competitors lose a TON of time with the pick, because they lack confidence if the bag isn’t sitting juuuuust right. This teaches you to eliminate excess movement, and just pick the fucking thing up. Try to do as many flips as you can in a minute.

This should also translate to events like atlas stone/natural stone to shoulder, and overhead throws.

Also a great idea, thanks man

DL

Work up to 320x1

Flew up. I’m getting nervous about the amrap sets of DL coming up. I think I may set a moderate rep goal and just aim to hit it and not surpass until week 3 of the anchor. The first 2 weeks will be under 300lb and I have a feeling my conditioning will be the only limiting factor in how many I get.

U got this boilerman. Crush your amrap

Thanks man that’s the plan. How is the barbell working out for you?

It’s great boilerman. You’re a real one. I finally feel happy again.

Bench

Work up to 195x1

Going to put up a vid to hopefully get some form advice. Bench still doesn’t feel right, so hopefully someone can pick out any obvious issues.

My main issue is unracking the bar and losing tightness in my upper back. Secondary issue is flexing glutes and leg drive… I just don’t know how to do it. @garagerocker13 sorry to keep tagging you man, but I’m not sure who would be the best to ask for advice on this and you have a much bigger bench than I do

Edit: wanted to add that my sandbags came today. Going to fill them up this weekend and put them to use.

Hey man, I may be the worst person to ask about bench. haha Mine is brute force with relatively little technique. But I do have a couple things I see:

  1. Your rack is too high so you’re having to unpack your upper back to get the bar out of the pins. Are they adjustable?

  2. Might be touching a little low on your chest, which can sort of kill your leg drive. How wide is your grip? You might benefit from widening your grip and not tucking your elbows quite so hard.

  3. Feet could be packed a little closer to your head, might help with tightness

  4. Have you tried keeping your head on the bench? I’ve never really liked picking the head up throughout the rep - more moving parts = more things to potentially go tits up

Happy cake day

Unfortunately the rack is non adjustable. I’ve noticed that unrack is probably the main issue here as I can’t just slide out the bar, I have to literally lift it out. Tried putting some foam pads under the bench feet and it helped but was just way too unstable for me to feel comfortable continuing doing it that way. I think it’s time I build some platforms.

Grip is pinkies on the rings. Somewhat out of necessity so I can get the bar out of the rack. Somewhat due to it being a little easier on my left forearm/shoulder where I’ve had issues before with (what I think is) tendonitis. I haven’t tried widening grip again recently though.

I will try bringing my feet a bit more under me. Ankle mobility is shit so I won’t be able to have my feet flat on the floor. Think this would cause an issue with leg drive?

I have tried head on bench. I find that I drive my head into the bench when I do and I end up with a crazy sore neck. I just assumed it probably isn’t the best idea to have that happen.

Thanks man, like I said I’m not sure who the “beginner bench form guru” is here but I appreciate you lending some input.

I figured that was the case, I think you can figure out the platform thing and fix it. This is probably 95% of your problem anyway, so it’s good that it’s not an intrinsic boilerman issue. haha

Ahh that makes sense. You might be able to just let your elbows flare a little more than they currently do without changing your grip.

I doubt it will cause you any trouble, plus you can probably develop better ankle mobility by trying to force this a bit.

Saaaaame. I learned that you have to tuck the absolute piss out of your chin to keep from ending up sore like that. If you can keep stable with the head movement then you’re probably fine, it would be the most minimal contribution to any bench issues anyway.

Overall, though, I think changing up your rack will fix just about everything. Still, 195 out of a super sub-optimal rack is good. It wasn’t a 1RM either, so you probably have 20 or so pounds at least in the tank :metal:

Skipped squat deload workout to use the sandbag. Final weight for bag 1 is 163lb. Haven’t filled the bigger one yet.

Set a 20 minute timer and did as many carries as I could.

9 carries of 120 feet with a 163lb bag. Hammies are screamin as are my lungs. Going to make this a weekly thing, just try to get as many carries in 20 mins as possible.

Going to try shouldering it a few times and call it a day.

Edit: have to figure out how to breathe with a bag on my chest. That really sucked.
