My sessions are one to two hours. Is that really so long to go without food? I don’t even know how long it takes for my food to get digested and used. My pre-workout meal could actually get used after I finish my session.
I drink my BCAAs during my workout and I eat Starbursts if I start to run out if gas or feel nauseous (blood sugar).
Other than that, I’m with @T3hPwnisher, I couldn’t eat a sandwich or chicken breast during training.
What I am talk about is when I first started lifting (pre 2K), it was a hard rule that you NEEDED at least 30 grams of whey and some sugar within 30 minutes of training or you basically wasted a training session. Guys would buy $8 Isowhey shakes or speed home to down NitroTech in fear of losing out on muscle. Most of us are not so finely tuned that this should be a serious concern. I didn’t eat after working out for almost a full year. My calories stayed about the same. Nothing changed.
That said, watched someone drink milk while working out. It was in an unairconditioned gym in July. His breath was enough to puke.
I still see a good number of guys races back to the locker room and chug down a huge arse shake immediately after slamming the last weight even now.
Whilst t nation and other BB/PL focused sites and sources have moved on from the window dogma, most mainstream sources that the average Joe/Joanie gets their information from have not.
Personally I have a quick whey shake with 1/4 of a serving of carbs as in getting ready and then have the rest of the carbs with bcaa during the workout which is usually around half an hour later. I then eat proper food when I get to work around 45 minutes to an hour after I’ve finished my workout. Seems to work fine and doesn’t leave me feeling sick. Dunno how anyone does the Anaconda type protocols personally.
For me carbs are the key to a good workout anyway, I could probably get on fine without the whey before hand.
we are the same on the eating, but I can drink something light. Anything with a remotely thick consistency bothers me, but gatorade or Plazma sits well. I can’t eat during comps either, and sometimes I can’t even stomach food for a few hours after. The way I handle comps is by having a bag of salt that i take handfuls of throughout the day, and then like 5-8 plazma scoops as needed.
I’ve known people with very sensitive systems when training and I’ve known people who can down a burrito between sets. There really is a wide range of what you can handle, let alone derive any benefit from.
I used to make a big deal about having something easy on your stomach like. Bowl of oatmeal or a shake before training (I always get hungry midway if I don’t), but BCAAs, plasma, even certain solid things like Finibars (I used to down 3 at a time before heading to the gym) don’t bother me in the least.
Customer invited me to train at a PL type gym attached to a bar. Very old school. The one guy who had won contests at 198 would sip vodka during his 3 minute rest periods. He was moving some real weight. Thinkng I was about to learn some huge secret I asked
“why the vodka?”
“Because whisky doesn’t sit well after squats.”
“Fair enough.”
I can train with nothing but I force myself to drink water as I think dehydration kills performance - and I tend to sweat a lot when I train (unless it is very cold).
