Bodybuilding (Competition) Q&A

Question for the vets:

For injury prevention and making your shoulders look like a bodybuilder’s, is training the rear delts first, laterals second and overhead pressing last a good strategy?
Many BBers seem to be realizing (Menzter pointed this out a lot) that with so much pressing work for chest, the over reliance on pressing for front delts can be almost redundant. I know that I always had decent delts and tris from all my chest work. Sure I did heavy shoulder presses, but I think that they contributed overall to my torso development moreso than giving me the rounded delts I needed for competition.

In my opinion, the middle and rear delts are what gives the ‘capped’ look, as well as adding the impression of width in specific poses. Presses are still useful for overall development, but by keeping it last, it not only reduces the amount of weight needed (less joint stress and a nice pre-exhaust effect) but can take you out of the ‘lift as much weight as you possibly can at all costs’ mentality.

Its really hard to gauge in your first prep. That’s why hiring a coach for that first prep is a good move imo

Afterward well you can just compare and adjust based on how you came in on your first go
How much does Skip charge?

I got into the habit of taking weekly photos of every relaxed and mandatory pose during my first contest prep. Having those to look at a year later, as I started getting ready for another show, but from a different bodyweight, gave me much more of an idea what I should look like (to some degree), than worrying if I weighed the same - which I didn’t.

x3 on it being hard to gauge.

and x2 on Stu’s method.

Question regarding body hair, especially for the hairier individuals, how do you handle it? shave, wax etc. Do you end up with wicked razor burn?

Here are my thoughts:

-I think having a base tan is important. Not a game changer, but when looking at your physique weeks leading up to the contest, gives you better perspective and more confidence. I’m pale when not competing and totally fine with that
-Rear delts first in your delt training. Shoulder presses = overrated
-Waxing better than shaving in the chest and abdominal area to prevent irritation and thin out hair. You can shave other areas

I’m 4 weeks from my next contest so all of this I am very familiar with

Trim everything 5-7 days before show
shave 1-2 day before getting your tan depending on how often you’ve shaved before

I personally used the venus razor that girls use for theirs legs and bikini bla bla along with the lotion or whatever… girls have sensitive skin so… yeah

Good stuff. Also, if you have sensitive skin, or fear that you may break out from a real (not just a ‘buzzing’) shave, do a couple of razor jobs a month out to see how you react. Nothing quite like having your chest all broken out in pimples, ingrown hairs, and clogged pores from the fake tanners.
