At the moment I’m training for Weightlifting. By Weightlifting I mean Snatch and Clean and Jerk.

When you have had a rough week, you wake up with a minor headache after getting 5 hours of sleep the night before and are seriously debating just skipping that workout entirely, what gets you out of bed is NOT your “like of training”. It is your desire to gain more or to avoid letting yourself slide backwards.
Those who simply like to train skip days like that. They don’t drive to the gym during a hurricane warning or try to see if their SUV can make it through that 4 inches of flood water. That is also why the majority of the people in the country claim they train “off and on”. I can’t say that. I have never trained “off”. It is that way because I want progress even more than I “like to train”.

So that’s why I always see those fat ladies or redneck looking guys get caught in the flood water in their car and require a rescue team to come save them. All along I thought they were idiots, but they were just trying to get to the gym.
In all seriousness, those are very important words - what gets you out of bed is NOT your “like of training” - to keep in mind, if anyone wants to remain consistent and make real progress. There must be a grander purpose, such is the case with anything which requires a lot of hard work and consistency, like earning a phD.
I still make too many immature mistakes at 22 years old, but I continually try to improve and increase my fortitude to get past those everyday obstacles. I remember on Christmas Eve I spent three hours driving around the city trying to find an open gym (hell I was willing to pay whatever it took to get my training done for that day) and without finding an open gym anywhere I had to settle for 2 30lb dbs, a crappy apartment clubhouse ‘gym’, and a few mini-bands. You know what, though, I was one sore mofo from that workout. Guys like you, Prof X, who obviously demonstrate in physique the YEARS and YEARS of consistency do things like that without second thought, and that’s why you’ve earned the results you’re able to show. If you treat lifting, nutrition, etc and all that comes with it as life or death, then there won’t be any question whether you skip the workout when the conditions aren’t optimal.
It truly all comes down to consistency and consistency often time requires sacrifice and/or sucking it up and getting shit done.
Also, to answer the original question–weight lifting is what bodybuilders, powerlifters, football players, weekend warriors, me, or anyone on this board does. We are lifting weights–weight lifting. What follows is the purpose for weight lifting. Some do it for bodybuilding or powerlifting competitions, others to get as big and strong as possible without necessarily competing, there are guys who only lift to get chicks, I do it b/c I go coo-coo for Cocoa Puffs if I don’t let out my excess energy regularly (exaggeration), some do it to improve sport performance, and the list obviously goes on and on.

Bodybuilders do more isolation work, try to work on seperation and definition and it seems they hangout more in the 8-12 12-15 rep range
Powerlifter focus on the big 3, do lower reps and dont seem to worry to much about defenition or things like arms and abs.
Weightlifters do a very wide variety of things while trying to get bigger and stronger but not worrying about doing a show or any type of strength comp they just lift to lift and look and feel good.

your breakdown is flawed, you completey left out Olymoic lifts which is a well established discipline on its owm.
it should be:
bodybuilding
powerlifting
olympic weight lifting
recreational weight lifting
you could also throw the new kid on the block: strongman

Like isn’t a strong enough word.
I think if we didn’t “like” lifting heavy weights and training hard then we wouldn’t do it. Who here doesn’t enjoy putting forth maximum effort in your training? To be sure not wanting to backtrack is a definite motivation too.
I take great satisfaction in soreness from a really intense workout. Knowing you pushed yourself to improve, adapt, grow stronger, bigger. I’ll be reminiscing on my last really good workout and looking forward to the next time. The next time, how can I improve? Either lifting heavier, or lifting the same amount for more reps, doing more sets. Sometime just maintenance during a stressful time or working around an injury will slow us down, but we can still find little ways to make progress.

I’ve heard it explained like this and it seemed to make sense for a brief overview. BB’s are the biggest. PL are the strongest and WL are the most powerful/athletic.
