I think Chris Dickerson said this in relation to training his calves.
“Obsessed is just a word that lazy people use to describe the dedicated.”

I loved that.

This quote has been with me for awhile now…

“Weights are like walnuts, you gotto crack them real HARD to get to the CORE!”

I know it might not be bodybuilding related but the stages of development as defined by Dave Tate. I can’t seem to remember where it is, but everyone remembers it.

Does anyone know where the Henry Rollins quotes come from? Are they from a particular book he wrote?

Do or do not, there is no try.

Not lifting related, but rather law enforcement. They ring true…

In law enforcement, the customer is ALWAYS wrong.

In God we trust. Everyone else is run through NCIC.

Sometimes there is justice. Sometimes there is just us.

I’d rather be tried by 12 then carried by 6.

And anything Animal is quality material as well.

I’m sure most of you agree.

People with OCD often quote that.

I am not trying to get into a juvinile exchange here with you but this is a pretty good thread as commented on by quite a few people. You have now posted a few times to this thread without adding anything that benefits this topic.

I did not reply the first few times but how about you add something constructive instead of your negative comments to the quotes that mean something to the people that post them. Is there a training quote that speaks to you?

With respect,
A

No kidding, man! You can’t take these quotes out of context. Obviously there are people with obsessions, but there are also people who think anybody not as lazy as them has some sort of “problem.”

Good on you posting this thread. I like to absorb all the badass quotes I can.

My previous posts on this thread were tongue-in-cheek. So no need to get offended.

Secondly, it does surprise me when something along the lines of “Lift it, you pussy” is able to inspire so many bright people on this site. I just find it paradoxical.

As far as which quotes motivate me? To be honnest, this thread has grouped all the ones I used to enjoy in my younger days (not that I’m implying that they are immature).

But in recent years they’ve lost their edge for me.

Call it a paradigm shift, but I find it overly dramatic for weekend warriors to use “Pain is weakness leaving the body” to motivate them to do another set of squats versus the Marines using it to help mold men and women who will actually be in life and death situations.

These quotes are sweet, but at the same time you have to see the humour in those who think going to the gym is some monumental battle.

If you can’t see that then we’re not on the same wave length at all.

And with that - I’ll leave your thread alone.

?Courage is not the absence of fear, it is the ability to overcome fear.?
“Only the weak attempts to accomplish what he knows he can already achieve.”
“Commitment is the ability to carry out a worthy decision, even when the excitement of making that decision has passed.”
“Life only gets good when you learn to stop worrying about what others are thinking of you.”
“The good Lord gave you a body that can stand most anything. It’s your mind you have to convince.”
"To find success; go where others won’t go, do what others won’t do, and be what others won’t be. "
“If you are lucky enough to find a way of life you love, you have to find the courage to live it.”

I guess that’s a no. I was not offended but if you come up with any other quotes that do speak to you currently, post them for us.

Thanks,
A

Always good to hear from a fellow Animal.

Training

“It is the only moment in the day which is truly yours. Your time. Your body. Your workout. You zone out and forget all the outside bullshit. There are no distractions, no women, no fucking cell phones? Nothing except you and the weights. This is the time of the day that is solely devoted to your well being and improvement.”

Not a quote but I like this recollection of John Defendis training at Mr. America Steve Michalik’s gym in NY in the late seventies.

Steve didn’t take any bullshit. One day a guy with ELS (Exaggerated Lat Spread) came in to workout and Steve stopped him and told him that he was three months overdo on his membership dues. The guy said, “Yeah, whatever. I’ll bring money in next time,” and then proceeded to work out. Steve reached into the bottom drawer of his desk, took out a hammer, and headed out the front door.

Oh boy, I thought. This is gonna’ be good. I gotta’ see this. As I walked out the front door of the gym, I saw Steve walk over to the guy’s Corvette and smash in the headlights. Just as the guy came running out of the gym, Steve started whacking out the passenger side windows. The guy was screaming frantically, “Stop! Someone call the cops. What the hell are you doing to my car?” Steve just nonchalantly looked at him and said, “It’s okay now. We’re even. You can go train.”

“HULK SMASH!”

“IF they could they would, since they can’t they rant” - Dave Tate

“Train beyond the pain, and death is your only release”

Have you read Intensity or Insanity. Amazing fucking story right there.

While doing some heavy squats, a teenager approached me and asked “What do squats build?” without missing abeat the owner of the gym answered : “Character”

Don’t remember who said it.

Bill Philips said that, as the definition to insanity. Not sure if he made it up though.

He just rewrote an Einstein quote.

“Insanity: doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.”
Albert Einstein, (attributed)
he said this of quantum theory where, well, this does happen!
