Recently I have done my blood work and my doctor told me that everything is ok… However, after doing my own research on thyroid hormones, low t, prolactin etc I know that there is something wrong with my body.
Now I know that I might have subclinical hypothyroidism and that may be the cause for my low testosterone and high prolactin. I had a look at my blood work that was done 5 years ago, 2 and 1 year ago and my blood test results looked very similar to the recent one. TSH over 4 and low t (between 12-14nmol/l).
I don’t have any history on my prolactin because they didn’t check it before but I guess it was high as well. I was really tempted to start TRT but maybe thyroid is the main problem and it causes all of my symptoms? Doctor won’t prescribe me levothyroxine and said that I’m within the normal range and don’t need any treatment. Maybe my pituitary isn’t working right? I don’t know… Can anyone help me?
My blood test results I’m mostly concerned about (rest is ok):
Check for hashimoto’s disease by checking antibodies.
Antidepressants and thyroid problems can cause high prolactin. Subclinical hypothyroidism will sometimes progress to full blown hypothyroidism, taking years for the free thyroid hormones to decline.
High cortisol over a long period of time can permanently damage the leydig cells in the testicles which is responsible for making testosterone.
Your pituitary gland is strong, indicated by the high levels of stimulating hormones ->LH and TSH. Your pituitary gland is doing its job, but as I said before the chronically high cortisol is affecting your testicles ability to produce testosterone.
I was struggling with anxiety and stress for some time so maybe that’s the issue (I never took any anti-depressants)I don’t know if I should try to find another doctor that will prescribe me some thyroid medicine like levothyroxine or should I self-medicate with it and start with a low 25mg dose a day and do my bloods after 5-6 weeks and see where I’m at. I have a really bad fatigue symptoms as well as bad mood etc. it seems like my body doesn’t produce enough testosterone as well, I’m only 27 years old. I dont drink alcohol, I don’t smoke and I train 5 days a week. (Also, I never used any anabolic steroids). Do you think it would be best to first attack thyroid problems and If I still have symptoms after adjusting my TSH levels try TRT and see if that helps with my fatigue, mood, anxiety etc? I feel like I don’t have any energy and I have to push myself to do anything (work, gym etc.)
You don’t have low T. Your SHBG is lowish and your FT is perfectly mid range. Even your TT isn’t really low. Your pituitary is signally properly. There is no issue here.
my Thyroid levels were in the mid-range, as in TSH/T3. i started armour thyroid 1g/60mg. big difference. i think you might benefit from it. some people don’t convert t4->t3 very well. i would recommend pure t3 or armour
First priorities first. Adjust stress and keep in mind your body can’t differ psychological and physical stress - Train less for a period? Also, make sure to get enough sleep.
Would you take amphetamines to feel better? For some reason it’s socially accepted to treat with thyroid hormones for any discomfort. You’re most likely looking for an (one) easy solution, moving your attention to the thyroid - though the thyroid labs look fine.
