Blood Pressure Readings

I just had a blood pressure reading and it was 132/65. The doc had to use a bp cuff for a regular persons thigh for my arm since it kept popping off. Since some people have accused me of being half simian, what do these readings mean? I’ve been told that bodybuilders/strength atheletes normally have higher readings. I looked up bp readings and most info was for the elderly. I consider myself to be in excellent shape but the high readings got me a little worried.

I had mine checked a few weeks ago when I paid the doctor a visit to have my knee checked out.

I think it was 110/60. Which is very good indeed. Usually I’m around 120/60. So I would say that you are fine!!!

I agree with Nate: your readings are fine.

The first number, the systolic reading, not
high unless 140 or higher. 140 is considered
a borderline value… not really seriously
high, but the very minimum value that is
categorized as high. You’re below that.
It doesn’t matter that you weren’t
way below, you’re still below.

The more important number is the second
one, the diastolic value. There the borderline
value is 90. You’re way below that.

Two weeks ago I was measured, and mine was similar to yours, a week later I was measured and I was 116/62. There was no real change in diet, stress or anything (at least that I could think of). Like the others said, unless it gets really high, don’t worry. Go have bacon cheese burger!

Bill is right. Your pulse pressure is a little widened (the difference between the two) which means youve got a good strong heart and a slow heart rate (at a guess) to give plenty of time for diastolic filling. Either that or youve got aortic regurgitation and you’re screwed! And yes, I am a doctor.

(PS- Kidding about the AR- if you had it you probably couldn’t bust your nuts in a gym and its a geriatrics problem anyway.)
