I think that the main problem, that nobody is addressing, is that people can void their bowels when in rear naked chokes.
I don’t want ‘soilage’ on my clothes.

It depends on the skills of your opponent. I would not say that it’s easy to prevent Marcello Garcia from choking you.

Chad, out of curiosity which bjj academy did you study at?
Which rank did you hold?

Tell that to Jacare – who got RNCd by Roger Gracie in the 2005 ADCC absolute finals. Roger GRACIE vs JACARE' - YouTube Jacare sucks, right?
That said, an RNC usually is pretty easy to avoid grappling if you (1) keep your chin down and look into your shoulder, and (2) have a very high pain tolerance. Good neck strength helps, too. If he can’t move your chin, he can’t choke you. All bets are off if the other guy gets to pound you in the neck or head before applying the RNC, though.
My understanding is that many law enforcement agencies are banned from using the RNC unless in a deadly force situation. The reason behind this is that the RNC constricts the veins thus constricting blood flow OUT of the brain. There is a small portion of the population whose veins will not open back up after the RNC is released. This is where the potential problems occur after application.

I need to learn what you know then…
You train with purple/brown/black belts and don’t get caught in RNC’s?
That’s pretty good.

The RNC is not a blood choke. It does not cut off the blood flow to the brain instead it constricts the windpipe. Thus it does have greater lethal potential.
Head and arm = Blood choke
RNC = Air choke
Triangle = both
Again, don’t be looking to take a street fight to the ground as there is a good chance his friend is going to run up and kick you in the ribs.
That aside if your in a fight you do what you need to do. If you put it on for about 3 seconds you will not choke the guy out but you will scare the piss out of him. More then likely they won’t want to continue.
True, ground fighting is dumb when you realize he has three friends that are now kicking your ribs in. The street isn’t the mat.
Hey Guys,
Keep in mind the title of this thread is “BJJ Question.” So when I say that a RNC is not difficult to avoid, I’m speaking as it relates specifically to BJJ - not MMA.
Plus, I was merely stating that RNCs are rare in BJJ when the two opponents compete at a high level. So when we talk about two skilled BJJ fighters, it’s rare to see a RNC because it’s relatively easy to avoid.
The guy who started this thread was looking for advice on a RNC. I jumped in because someone who’s only been training BJJ for a few months should NOT be focusing on RNC - it’s easy to avoid, it’s tough to administer, and it doesn’t work equally well for everyone.
On the other hand, he should be focusing on arm bars. The reason? You can get an arm bar from many positions, and it’s very effective against anyone (ie, no one has the ability to hyperextend their elbow joint far enough to avoid tapping).
That’s all.

Hi Guys,
I started doing BJJ back in September and was jus wondering how safe is a rear naked choke as in if u were in a self defence situation is it safe to choke someone out? As in theres very little chance of god forbid any permanent damage being done? Just something i always wondered about!
In a self-defense situation you should be more worried about your safety. If you know how to do the choke properly then it’s probably the safest option (for the attacker)of all subs. Guys get choked everyday in every BJJ school in the world.
I’ve trained for over 7 years and I have seen guys pass out from chokes. I have passed out from a triangle choke before. No one ever ended up in the hospital.
Keep this is mind: in training one can tap and have the sub stopped. On the street if you arm bar someone they won’t tap (and if they did are you going to let them go so they can keep fighting?) so you pretty much have to break it. If you are worried about getting sued it’s the guy who can’t work because of a damaged arm or leg who will sue.
If you have a question ask Chris at
He will usually post your answer in an actuall video to show you
