BJ vs. Hughes II Sept. 23rd

lol.

I live where Penn lives. 2 nights ago he got into some fights with some dude at a local bar here (backing up his brother)

and didn’t win.

Now his ‘opponent’ that night, doesnt practice ANY martial arts…

ahem…a little insight for you guys on the match to come.

As I said before Penn would destroy him standing. I don’t see how anyone could pick Matt to do anything standing besides go for a takedown, I think Matt probably ties his shoes laying down.

With all due respect to your point, you are thinking about the old Matt Hughes. As previously stated I give Penn the advantage standing. However, Hughes is good enough to exchange punches with Penn at any given moment. It’s not like all he is is a wrestler.

You’ll have to take a closer look at some of his more recent fights and how he has been training. He can also throw some pretty mean kicks.

In fact, if Penn underestimates his striking ability that will not bode well for his chance to beat Hughes.

My point is that some wrestlers who truly are one dimensional ground and pound fighers must strictly avoid trading punches with a good striker like Penn. Hughes, does not have to worry about that as he is mutli dimensional, and can punch and kick when the time is right.[/quote]

Hi,

I just don’t see any great improvement in stand up striking with Hughes. To me even his mindset is not that of a striker. We’ll just have to disagree on that one.

And to answer for slim I don’t think anyone here was saying Matt fights only subpar opponents. But he has fought some and the opponents he beat standing…were not good stand up fighters…Penn can stand with much more capable stand up fighters. Don’t get me wrong he can beat just about anyone when he takes the to the ground.

Regardless it’s going to be a good fight.

Zeb, I was referring to the 16-1 you were citing in that post.

Yeah, I was talking about Carlos Newton, 12 and 10 Carlos Newton, twice. Sean Sherk and GSP are two quality wins…I thought Charutto was robbed in that decision, but yeah he gets Charutto too.

Also included in your assessment:

Gil Castillo?

Hirometsu Kanehara?

John Cronk?

Bruce Nelson?

Brett Al-azzawi?

Chatt Lavender?

Steve Gomm?

I wasn’t saying Hughes isn’t good or that he hasn’t fought any good competition, but if you’re going to do a breakdown like that you can’t ignore the fact that Penn won’t accept fights against the lower echelon fighters and his losses have come against the best opposition he could find.

No slight on who Penn has fought at all. But Matt has fought everyone that the UFC has put in front of him and has done a great job doing it. The slugs he beats quickly (in most cases) and the better fighters he also beats…some quickly as well.

I think you meant to type ‘Jessica Alba, circa Dark Angel s. 1’.
