Binge Drinking Once in a While?

My experience: when I was 20, no problem. At 28, I can still overcome excessive drinking from time to time, but it’s much tougher. Age, previous alcohol use/abuse, and activity the rest of the week play HUGE roles in the answer to this question.

A beer or two are different, you can do this every week if you want to. But getting shitfaced is very taking on your body which means it interferes with recovery and growth.
once a week and no progress? lol yeah, cause it takes a full week to recover from 4 hours of alcohol. Actually, touching the outside of a bottle will literally cause your muscles to disappear.

Im all for dedication, but plenty of big guys have lifted weights and gotten drunk in the same week. The body’s capable of much more then people give it credit for.

OP alcohol isn’t going to help you, and yeah it’s not going to give you “optimal” progress, but unless your making your money off this or are competing very soon enjoying yourself occasionally isn’t going to halt all progress. And you’ll probably enjoy yourself more.
It doesn’t have to take a week. if it takes 48 hours for your horomones to normalize, that’s a ton of your progress.

Drinking to the point of vomiting every week isn’t healthy. I’d be surprised if a natural trainer could make any real progress that way. All that aside, it isn’t healthy or enjoyable either.

If you are really needing to get piss drunk every week in order to enjoy yourself or have fun, you have other problems.

As far as general advice, no one can tell you what exactly your body will do. Do what you want. If, while consistently getting trashed, you are getting fat, weak, and growing tits decide what you want more. If not, then decide based on whatever it is that happens to your body.
No one said it was helpful physique wise. Im saying “once a week = no progress” is stupid, even if it takes 48 hours for hormones to normalize you still have 4-5 days of “normal” hormones. Your body will still have food, training stimulus, and sleep during those 4-5 days. Progress possible, no not optimal. How much progress? I don’t know, depends on a lot of factors.

No one said getting piss drunk is healthy. It’s not, no one with a brain will ever argue that. As for whether or not it’s enjoyable? It is, at least that’s what my experiences and observations at college tell me. You might not enjoy it but it’s fun for a lot of people.

He never said he “needed” to get drunk. Again, college kids do it every week, usually multiple times a week. It’s fun, it’s living life and making dumb choices. If your not going to compete or make your money off this, it comes down to what you want. Do you want to get drunk with your friends, make dumb choices, and laugh/regret it later? Or do you want a slightly better physique?

Choices. Make the one the makes you life better/more enjoyable.
I find happiness in being healthy, having friends that I can stand and can stand me sober, having more money, and not doing retarded things I regret.

I’m not saying you can’t be happy drunk off your ass, lots of alcoholics are happy. But sacrificing health and money and self image to some ultimately hollow and unfulfilling end is a waste. I’m arguing against the fact that not drinking is somehow not living (I personally see it the other way around). While you are out drinking, I’m out hiking, camping, reading, taking care of chickens, going on dates with my wife, taking glass blowing classes, going to the farmers market, feeding the chickens, putting out fires, cutting up cars, learning new programming languages, getting my EMR license, est. Not going out to bars and getting drunk doesn’t mean you aren’t living, just the opposite in my book.

It’s like you guys think there is some dichotomy between getting drunk and sitting on a couch watching TV.

I’m not telling anyone what to do, but the notion that I was somehow suggesting someone not go out and live life is just wrong.

I’m married and settled down and living life far more than I ever did drinking and partying in college. I just wished I’d learned that sooner.

Not to mention you see a few drunken decisions people don’t live long enough to regret or do their regretting from a hospital bed, and the novelty wears off.

Damn I sound old. GET OFF MY LAWN!

I don’t know how or why you started arguing about how not drinking isn’t living. I never said that, I replied to your post where you basically told the OP “Drinking isn’t fun” by saying a lot of people disagree with your view. Same thing with “But sacrificing health and money and self image to some ultimately hollow and unfulfilling end is a waste.” that’s your opinion that it’s a waste. I don’t view the times I spent drunk as wasteful. A lot of people don’t.

You have a family, career, goals, and your own personal desires. Drinking’s not one of them, that’s your choice. For him/a lot of people (especially younger ones), drinking is fun/not a waste of time. I personally think getting drunk with my friends is a way better use of my time then hiking, camping, feeding chickens, going to farmers markets, and cutting up cars. Doesn’t mean those are a waste of time, definitely not for you. But to me, yeah 95% of the time I’d take getting drunk on the weekend with my friends then doing any of those.

Again, it’s choices/views. You think drinking is not fun, a waste of time, way more negative to your life and goals. Nothing at all wrong with that, and im sure you’re right that not getting wasted is better for your life, but it’s not going to be the “right” viewpoint for everyone. Not everyone has the same goals, life situation, or viewpoint.

I’d add a distinction between drunk/drinking and so drunk you’re puking. Neither of them are great for health, but you’re effectively overloading your bodies ability to deal with a toxin; that isn’t good.

And I’ll keep cutting open cars, and responding to shootings, fights, and falls so dumb asses can live to regret it and the people they hurt can live to sue them.

Drunkenness is never a good thing. You can do it responsibly-ish, but it has never been the right thing to do, from any viewpoint.

If the best times in your life you were drunk, maybe sober you just sucks.

use college to learn how to get pussy and have a good time with just a couple of beers in you.

Lol. It was a really good read.

No in short!

Anyways you know how your training goes and how you feel when you drink lots, if it doesn’t seem to be affecting it you will be fine.

Anyways compared to the amounts of coke, weed, cigarettes and other drugs (legal and non) many professional bodybuilders did/do, a drink is not gong to have that much of an effect. Top athletes drink and drink a lot.

And I doubt if you are posting in beginners worrying about the hormonal effects of alcohol is something you need to do.

I think the OP was drunk when he posted this and forgot about the thread. But I’m sure he would appreciate everyone’s concern, if he knew about it.

i do appreciate everyone’s concern, i just dont have anything right now to contribute to the discussion.

except that i think DoubleDuce is closed minded when it comes to alcohol, its not that you turn into a different person and gets addicted to alcohol after a binge, in truth you resent it the days after. and you never loose your senses just you inhibitions, people who do stupid stuff when drunk probably do stupid stuff when sober too.

I have alcohol pretty much every day. I even make my own beer. Yes, I am sooo closed minded with alcohol.

I’ve just seen enough to know nothing good ever comes of having 12 beers. Get out of bed at 3 in the morning a couple of times and go try to save a guy that just wrapped his car around a telephone pole and is up walking around and fighting you while bones are sticking out, or the guy who shot his best friend in the back 5 times over something stupid, or the guy who gets drunk and hits his wife or kid. Yes, large doses of alcohol change who you are.

Hell, even if you aren’t violent or won’t drive, you generally end up around people who are. But even without violence and stupid decisions, just tripping and falling the wrong way could kill you or give you brain damage. If you are thinking you are being smart walking, all you are really doing is preventing yourself from killing others with a car. Drunk walking is actually far MORE dangerous than drunk driving. You are more likely to die if you are walking home from the bar.

Even going into places to help the drunk idiots is many times dangerous for sober people with training to handle those kinds of situations.

There is just plan nothing good about getting that drunk.
