Bike Sprints Good for Fat Loss?

My mom has been sedentary for the past ~20 years, and now she wants to get back in shape - she needs to lose some 15 lbs and gain some muscle- fearing that old age might actually cripple her if she doesn’t start exercising.
So, until I manage to get her to try resistance training and stair climbing, I was thinking of buying her an exercise bike for Christmas.

So, how effective is sprinting on a bike for fat loss? Grades: 1- walking 4- running 10-sprints, HIIT, Tabata etc

I’d really appreciate a few opinions, since I don’t have very much money to spend, and wouldn’t like to buy something useless or semi-useless.

Thanks, Vlad

I’m not sure that any type of true all-out sprints are appropriate for someone who’s been away from exercise for so long.

With that said, a stationary bike could be a good first step to re-introducing her to physical activity provided that she will use it consistently.

Consistency is the key indeed. I used to be fat, and my mom got a bike for the family, but primarily for myself. Lost a good 10-15kg of fat on it and got my fitness up. I was hella dedicated though, so I biked A LOT.

I’m with HK.

Since she was sedentary for a long period, any activity will do. An exercise bike is a good starting point, not in the least because of it’s low impact on her joints, that need to get used to more movement.

But don’t throw everything you’ve got at her. She has to overcome her old habits which requires a behavioral change. She needs to develop some consistency. At this stage, it’s all about keeping her motivated. For now, set some easy attainable, realistic goals. You can do some intervals, but keep the intensity low. Sprinting will be too much.

The fact that you lost so much with a bike is all I needed to know. Thank you very much, Diamond.

Thank you all, Vlad
