All I have to say is: I live in Whitefish, Montana and would love to meet up with you sometime…if you’ll have me, of course.

Awesome gym, and very inspirational pics for someone 5’5" 172lbs and debating on continuing to gain size or to shed some fat first ;).
I think I have a long way to go before reaching an ultimate size goal (I’d like to see what I’d look like at 200+lbs with approx. 15%bf), but I’d also like to stay competitive strength wise for my weight class (165) in PL competitions.
Ever think of offering a T-Nation member rate to train at your gym?
We could stay at a local hotel for a month or so (if you have any close by) and train with your equipment.
We’d just have to sign something makeing ourselves liable for any injury due to trying something stupid.
(Kidding of course…kinda)

Tonight was good. I think I was really down last night because the meet I was going to compete in, was on the verge of being canceled. But Gus Rethswich and WABDL has stepped up and kept the contest going.

Any time you can make it to Montana, you can train. There might be some medial tasks around the house , like mow the lawn. Laundry, etc…
But keep going, I have been doing this 21+ years and I am still learning. Good luck with your goals.

Nate,
You are only 70 miles away and any time you wanna hook up and come train you are more then welcome.
Also remember the WABDL MT Meet is going to be Sept. 10, 2005 in Missoula. If you can not compete maybe you can help?
Train hard and keep going.

Damn… You have a better V-Taper than I do at that weight! ![]()
I love that picture with the huge concrete balls, that was funny to see for some reason.

Yep, Nate and I oughta swing by and train with ya every now and then but damn, I’d be the old fart of the bunch!
Keep in touch with me on the WABDL MT Meet!

That would be awesome. I’d be the young pup of the group, but I’d love to train and learn from the both of you.
I’ll be in touch.

Good God! You are one big, bad motherhumper, my friend. If I had that setup in my house, I’d never go out! I’d barricade myself in the basement with tubs of Grow!, Surge and creatine. I must say that an elliptical looks a little out of place near those concrete balls.
I’ve got you by three years, brother, and I’m training more intensely (and intelligently…thanks to the people here at the nation) than I did when I was in my 20s. Keep bangin’.
Hi BiggJames,
Congratulations on the recent birthday. Your training to date had led you to some really great numbers. Way to go. Since you are asking for a review on your training I?ll give you my opinion. Now I have not put up nearly the number you have but I do complete in powerlifting and have done a strongman contest.
I general I think you should spend more of your training time on the compound exercises similar to what Charles mentioned. For example in a recent workout you worked up and did only 1 set of squats. For your strength those other sets were just warm-ups. I don?t think the leg extensions or leg curls are going to help you much. I think you?ll make more progress if you worked up and did several sets of squats, several sets of deads and finish off with some reverse hypers. Chad W writes up many programs on the site that focus on the core lifts for many sets.
I also think you would benefit by training each body part 2-3 times per week. You might do an upper-lower split on Mon/Tue and Thurs/Fri and then devote a weekend day to the strongman lifts. With this training split you would need to focus only on the compound lifts. On your upper days you could do only horizontal pressing on 1 days and only vertical pressing on the other day. You could take a similar approach with back.
I am happy to discuss more ideas if you are interested.
Doug
How much did all that cost, might I ask? That is QUITE the setup.

I have probably 3-5 grand invested. I have been building it over the last 5-6 years.
This year being the most with adding the power rack and the lat pull. It is a labor of love and it drives my wife insane.

Thank you.
As I get older I have found that all I need is one real heavy working set. A couple of weeks ago Charles Poliquin had listed this as one of the tips for older lifters. Not to do more then 6 reps per set
http://t-nation.com/readTopic.do?id=698676
So I lift how I feel.
If I were to do more I would be grossly overtrained. As for the leg extensions and leg curls, I do them because I do not have a leg press in my gym. I know that leg ext./curls are not strength exercises. But I like to do them with a nice tempo, usually 424. Maybe it goes back to my old school roots, but I like the feel of the contraction when I am squeezing the muscle at the top and then the burn as I lower the weight.
First off, the training I am currently doing is to train for a push/pull contest. So the training that I am doing is directly related to exactly that. I also train by percentages, I try to increase my max by 10-15% so I train by those numbers.
Second, when I train for strongman I do things a whole lot differently. One day will be a heavy gym day, then the next will be strength events, with the last being a high stress cardio day. The fourth being rest, and then starting the whole cyle over again.
I am always interested in others input. I will look at it, I may even try it. But I also believe in the old adage if it isn’t broke, don’t fix it, but you sure as hell can tweak it.
