Beyond Program: Deadlift

I just finished the 20 weeks of the Beyond Program and the results were great; in my opinion its the best 5/3/1 version so far. So first of all thank you Jim for creating and sharing the program, its just phenomenal.

I was able to improve my squat max by 35kg, although the squat was my weakest lift (not anymore). The improvements in the bench press and overhead press were also great, except for the deadlift. I had the feeling that the frequency (1-2/week and sometimes 2 days after heavy squatting) and the intensity (joker sets) were too taxing in the long run. I am competing in strongman so improving the deadlift is very important for me.

I am going to start the next cycle (20 weeks) next week. Any suggestions for making better improvements in the deadlift?
(sorry if my english is not perfect, I’m from Germany)

Well…no “max reps” and no joker would be a good starting point, IMHO.

Well, maybe I don’t deadlift at all in the fifth week, so I can recover better for the next cycle.

Deadlift less frequently (1-2 times a month), cap reps, and do a better job recovering between sessions.

Ok, but how do I fit the less frequently deadlifting into the beyond Program?

Just deadlift every other week? I don’t understand the question.

Ok, first of all, when I am talking about the Beyond Program I mean the Beyond version 1.1-1.4.
So in the first week of the 1.1 cycle for example you deadlift on wednesday for a PR set and the next week you deadlift on monday (5x3) and on friday for the next PR set. So when you say I should deadlift every other week, does it mean I should skip the deadlift sessions on monday and friday in the second week?
Thats what I meant when I asked about how to fit the less frequently deadlifting into the Beyond schedule.

You wouldn’t adjust the program. I thought you were talking about the Beyond Program - so that is my mistake.
Adjust your recovery or do the Beyond program. This program is written without much room for customization.

ok, thanks for the reply. I think I’ll try not deadlifting in the 5th week of every cycle. Its kind of a “deload” week anyway if I get the program right. I had such a great success with the program so far and I want to continue doing it and not deadlifting at all for one week after some heavy weeks has always worked well for me in the past.

Thanks again for the 1.1-1.4 version, I am on my second run and I am making PR’s nearly every week. You are improving everything: strength, muscle mass, condition and I really like the full-body kind of training. I think its your best work so far as you stated in your article.

Thanks - I appreciate it. I believe if WAS my best work but have since written two better programming styles.
That’s just my opinion though. But I am certainly not alone.

Wow, can’t wait to see that!!! When and where are you planning to publish it, if you don’t mind asking.

He has his own web forum. It’s a pay subscription for access, but (IMO) the amount of information it contains makes it worth the price.
