Beyond 531 Release?

Just downloaded the Kindle version. Can’t say enough good things about it. Buy it.

Who’s making changes to their templates after reading it and if so, which changes? I’m definitely going to do the first set last for a quick way to get more volume in. In regards to life balance, I’m trying to get the best training economy while getting as strong as possible. I like the Joker sets idea, but I could see that adding in a decent amount of time in. I’m going to experiment and see what I can get to get my strength work done, get a decent pump with high rep assistance, and still be out in an hour.

Joker sets will be the shortest chunk of the day, go ahead and add em in. Im currently doin the template found on page 23, along with joker sets and some other assistance work and Ive yet to go over 40 minutes in the gym (not including warm up). If you are still worried about time, plan for the sets but regard em as optional day to day. They are anyways, basically: if you are having an off day and only get 3 reps on your 3+ set, you aren’t gonna be doing any joking.

Just out of curiosity - for those who are 5/3/1 veterans, how do you approach resets? With the addition of the ‘everyday max’ and taking a percentage of that, instead of 90% of your 1RM, the loads will be significantly lighter. Do you go all the way until you can’t hit your respective numbers, be it 5, 3, or 1, or do you reset when you can’t hit a certain number or feel the high loads are ‘counterproductive’ if you will?

I don’t think I’ve ever gone past about 5 cycles. I always figured it was better to leve room for PRs and extra work on top (now called joker sets). Also I perform a lot better in general when the required weights are lighter, and that’s kinda central to the program.

Did the template from page 33 in my book. The Pr set was awesome, the joker sets were totally bad ass and the drop set kicked my sorry ass!! haha brutal but super fun. I am in love with this new stuff. Thanks Jim. home run hit here brother.

Since I’m on the wrong side of 35, I’m gonna stick with those “no challenge” variations like Advanced 5/3/1 and Volume Training for most of my training year.[/quote]
That’s what I planned to do…but I just finished the first day of the second week of “page 46-47” template, adding a couples of singles up to TM when I felt like. Feeling good so far!

I have never benefitted from rep pr’s on upper body lifts and I am getting a little older so I am using the “advanced” 5-3-1 on p.57 - week 1: 5 sets of five at 75%, week 2: 5 sets of three at 85%, and week 3: 5 sets of one at 95% - NO amrap sets !! (per Jim) I have only done 1 workout each for bench and mp’s, but so far I am loving it! Bench and DL I am using pause bp’s and pulls off of a 45lb plate for speed work at 65% on the 5’s week, 70% on 3’s week, etc and doing them first (he says either first or after the main work is ok) I am trying them before so I can still apply “last set first” to the day’s workout. It’s alot of volume but so far so good.

I have never mixed programs like this, but because of my varying responses to volume, etc…I figured I’d try a different variation for both upper body and lower body respectively. I really like the in-depth attention to assistance work in this incarnation. All in all, imo, the best so far by leaps and bounds, and I have been an avid follower (all versions at times) since’07. Highly recommended!

First of all with any program you’re supposed to be basing the numbers off of your everyday max, at least that’s what I’ve gotten out of them. Nobody tells you to use the number you hit that one time at a meet a year ago when you lifted out of your mind after having an 8 ball in the warmup room.

And yeah go until you fail the required reps. If you go like 15 cycles without needing a reset then fantastic for you. You either got a lot stronger or you set your training maxes stupidly low. You should be able to go at least 8 cycles IMO without needing to adjust.

I’ll be adding in the First-Set-Last into BBB (template where 5/3/1 and 5x10 are on different days for a lift) for bench and maybe OHP to take advantage of PAP and get some additional volume in. I really liked the idea of combining 5/3/1 and Prilepin’s chart as well–I’ll think I’ll give that a try once I no longer progress on BBB. The Spinal Tap variation is so tempting to try out, but maybe that’ll be for when I hit a wall with some of my lifts.

I meant how do you personally approach the reset. If I feel like I’m getting too close to hitting an absolute 5, 3, or 1rm max, I reset, since the program is based around submaximal training. I rarely will go until I actually cannot make the required reps.

I just purchased the new book. Another awesome book from Jim.

Jim,
if you’re still following this thread, is there a waiting list or a mailing list we can get on for the hardcopy version?
I really would like to read the book because of all the enthusiasm and warm recommendations, but I prefer a real book.
thanks
Willem

If Amazon ships to Belgium - http://www.amazon.com/Beyond-Simple-Training-Extraordinary-Results/dp/1467580309/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1373474769&sr=8-1&keywords=beyond+5%2F3%2F1

Just ordered the hard copy, and am looking forward to reading it.

Just finished my 4th cycle of the original 531. ( I own the second edition hardcopy ) My reps on 531 week have increased each cycle…truly amazing strength gains for me on all 4 lifts. I don’t ever want to stall out. If I do, It’s nice to have the option try something new with this new book. Thank you Jim.

Purchased the kindle edition on Amazon and this book has a lot awesome variations to the original 5/3/1 program. So many variations that it would take too long to name them here. I am still early in the 5/3/1 2nd Edition program but after a few more cycles I plan to add in the variations he mentioned in Beyond 5/3/1. Thanks Jim!!

Purchased and read yesterday. Good stuff.
