Best Workout Routine for Mood/Anxiety?

most literature has looked at endorphin release and aerobic work not anaerobic work. What limited stuff I have seen though shows aerobic work is actually better than your standard squat deadlift bench strength training in terms of endorphin release. I would still stick with strength training (duh this is tnation) BUT add in a few sessions of interval training, running OUTSIDE (not on a treadmill), hill running, or something along those lines. You can still gain strength, just look at jim wendler’s log on elitefts.

Not sure where you came up with this shit, considering he is ASKING about a training program. Which would lead a reasonable person to assume he WANTED to train.

Your assumption couldn’t be further from the truth.

So what kind of “stress” are you talking about when you say that you just need to get into that “zone” when people piss you off? It sounds like you are talking about the type of grief/stress which is “fixed” by doing a bit of hard-core DIY, or punching a wall…or having angry sex LOL. It just doesn’t sound like the type of stress/anxiety that the OP is talking about…that’s what I meant. If someone’s asking for a routine for reducing anxiety, low mood etc, it sounds to me like it’s a long term problem, not something trivial that can be sorted out in the short term by “getting all that anger out”.

Correct me, though, if I’m wrong about the assumption…

I ALWAYS want to train, it’s my passion…but I don’t always have the burning, excited desire to train on the day of my workout…do you see what I mean? When this happens often, like I said, it’s often a sign of CNS fatigue. Sometimes people don’t realise when they’ve lost motivation…until they experience what it’s like to have it back again.

I’m talking about every day of my life kid, not if my boss was mean to me, or something that you can “angry fuck” away.

What I said was pretty clear I thought. If I can get in the zone, I smash the weights, if I can’t, then they smash me. Either way I feel better than I did walking in.

Every day of my life is like that. Pretty much everything is like that. Sometimes you’re the windshield, sometimes you’re the bug. Either way, a day above ground without losing your shit is a good day.

It would be helpful if the OP gave some feedback or something…

All I’m saying is that you’ve got to take control of the situation you’re in, or the situation will control you (similar to what counting beans just said). If you’re moods low a lot, and you have anxiety, take control and change something. This however, doesn’t just mean pulling yourself together (as if it’s just a state of mind). There’s something biologically wrong if you’re long term depressed etc. Go to the doctors if you must. Or firstly, like I said, reduce workload somewhat, chillout, sleep more/better, eat more fruit/veg etc etc etc.

Basically, to ask for a “magical routine” to reduce stress/anxiety is unreasonable.

Giving or receiving? I can imagine the latter, but how do you personally handle the former? Not interested in trying myself (at all); just really curious how you pull it off… so to speak.

I’ve only been on the recieving end thus far. However, if my progress starts to stall, I might mix it up a little and try giving them.

Just get medication dude. That’s what I had to end up doing, with severe stress/anxiety/depression I actually completely lost interest in lifting and lost a lot of mass/strength. The medication I currently take is fairly cheap, and I’m looking for a good counselor. Sometimes ya gotta make big steps to really help yourself.[/quote]

curious, which medication?

Usually, they’ll give you a form of anti-depressant (this often works to bring down anxiety too)…if it’s really bad then they’ll give you a pretty strong anti-anxiety medication (usually last resort). In my opinion though, if it’s a mild to moderate case, one should try to sort these out naturally first because the side effects of the medication can be just as bad as the disorder. Side effects often include:

-Loss of appetite
-Dopey feeling (can’t think straight or remember things)
-Fat gain
-Loss of libido/erection problems

And worst of all

-Rollercoaster emotions (really high one day, then really low the next)
-Mood uplift effects often don’t last

I obviously speak with a bit of bias there (have had a family history of these sort of conditions), and there probably are ways of minimising the side effects/working around them. For some people, the side effects aren’t as bad.

Whenever I am stressed/bummed/anxious or whatever not feeling really ‘good’, I tend to do tons of sets. I just keep doing sets until I can’t do them anymore. Usually with a fairly heavy weight. Usually helps me forget my worries very quickly and by the end of the workout I’ll be too tired to care, and by the time I have a shake or goto sleep, it’s as if it never happened.

i think that part about " Just get medication" is the worst advice you can give i think medication is the last resort counselling + lifestyle changes 1st and if you still have problems then try medication, as a guy who is currently on a high dose of effexor and has been trough a few others and at one stage was on 6 Xanax a day i think just pop a pill and it will fix it is a bad attitude JMO though.
